In terms of a real physical return. Misty never actually shows up in DP at all in any of the 191 episodes. She's just in one of the Japanese openings and gets referenced in the ep Buizel is captured via the lure, but that's it.

It's funny that when DP was airing it was basically the first time the writers moved on from Misty completely, and she would stay gone all the way till Sun/Moon.

Misty and Dawn don't really have anything in common though, I doubt they would interact much. Misty would find Piplup cute and that's it

How is this spreading hate, what on earth? Misty factually did not appear in DP, how is that hate? Misty didn't appear in BW or XY either, what difference does it make?

Honestly thinking back on it now, the real reason Misty didn't get a cameo in DP was probably due to her unpopularity in the fandom at the time. We know Mayumi, her Japanese VA, was perfectly available for the entire 4-year span DP was airing so that can't be it.

Misty, as we know, was poorly handled in Johto with most of the original fanbase either losing interest in her or disliking her. When AG began, May immediately became more popular than her and the Contests became the most popular part of the anime, this is why the writers originally stopped Misty's cameos during AG and she barely appeared.

When DP was airing, it was of course directly after AG so May came back. But Misty was now the least popular of the first 3 girls, so the writers saw no reason for Misty to appear. Same reason she doesn't appear in BW/XY either for that matter.

It's like asking why Tracey didn't appear all those years, the writers tend not to bring back character if they're not popular unless they have to. Had the 20th anniversary not fallen under SM, she would not have appeared then either. Looking back, the writers probably felt the fandom wasn't interested. I didn't see any Japanese fans care misty didn't show up back then for example.

In fact besides BW-era Iris, Misty wound up being one of the least popular girls in the fandom for over a decade.
