For years on anime forums, facebook groups, etc., every now and then some woman pops up asking about Zero no Tsukaima, maybe because they found some screens they liked about this series and stuff like that.

I also found one girl two weeks ago, looking for info about this anime, so I'm glad to see that this series still generates a modicum of interest around as it was one of my favorites at the time.

The strange thing though is that of the many women who have asked for information never any have come back to say whether or not they liked the anime in the end.

So women, do you like this anime or not? I'm very curious. My guess is no because the series itself seems very "sexist" to me so to speak, but I would be glad to be wrong

Yeah I wonder if it’s hard for women to enjoy harem in general. I’m sure some of them do, but don’t know if it’s a lot.

Some of the “reverse-harems” have male viewers (like my life as a villainess) so maybe it works both ways

Granted, I've only seen the first two seasons. But in the first two seasons the harem component is not as emphasized as the usual harems, in the sense that is strong the romantic component that binds the two protagonists, that the other girls never have a real chance to meddle. For me it is much more romance than harem. That's also why I have the doubt.

I'm not a women but I think sexist is the wrong word for familiar, fanservice in itself is of course inheritently male targeted in a standard harem show(unless it's a reverse harem obviously) but that's not the same as sexist. For example while yes the characters are sexualised, Tabitha is by far the most competent, level headed and dependable of the group of teens, the ruler of the nation and one who both commands and leads troops into battle during war-time is a single independent women with ultimate authority and the captain of the cavalry gaurd(a unit of elite women soilders who are very rarely sexualised and figth despite a lack of magic in a world ruled by a class system and actual in-universe sexism) is also a women. Amoung harem shows I'd actually suggest it's pretty balanced in its depiction, some girls are, let's just say 'haren troops' but equally alot of the guys are complete dolts. All told I'd hardly call familiar sexiest quite the opposite in fact for something from Japan and the harem indusry, it's just operating within a genre is all๐Ÿ‘.

Agreed, though the harem element becomes more previlent in S3 and S4, by that point Saito and Louise's bond is unquestionable, making most of the harem stuff more just fanservice for the audience then is normally the case with harems. S1 and S2 it would straigth up be misslabelled to call it a harem, they'res a love triangle (more so in S1 but Seista does still try in S2) but that's about all. Kirche is just teasing, that leaves only Louise and Seista, 2 girls/guys going after 1 girl/guy is a triangle not a harem lol.

as a women who has seen the show: no.

I just feel like this show is just very generic and does not stand out when comparing to newer shows in the same type of genre. I actually do enjoy some harem shows, but for this one the plot was just plain boring to me.

That's a shame, amoung the harem and isekai genres it is one of the best even if it's Excecution is sometimes a little faulty, the writing always feels sincere and the likes of the OST are still great to this day with a charming artstyle and some amazingly details+highly fitting background artwork. Further it's desicion not to be a 'true harem' but instead show the growing bonds of the main duo over the course of a lengthy course of seasons/episodes and to develop the world is pretty rare for an isekai harem from long before that genre blew up.

I know the tonal whiplash of season 2 is a nigthmare but equally there's some brillaint writing woven in their about
All from a genre that often doesn't really have any themes or deeper messages at all past bare surface level stuff.

(@Emmadilemma21 - this migth be relevent to your comment too๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘)Familiar is a traditional romance in all senses of the word while also often criticising(not in a deconstructive way, rather in a good writing way) said story's. Saito and Louise have a fairy-tail romance, and equally Saito figths an army, it's all a fairy tail and it works as one really well once you realise that's what it wants to be, rather then some generic harem, and as such that's how it should be viewed and graded. Theres nothing wrong with a story being a fairy-tail, I think we still have room for a bit of that, even if that does mean it sometimes come off as chessy/clichéd or generic, the classics are there to always put a silly smile on your face๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘.

As a woman I personally don't mind harem animes. I actually feel that it resolves potential character disputes.

This one, however, I personally found to be rather annoying because the main character (especially in future seasons) repeatedly pledges himself to one girl (Louise) yet does exactly the opposite in action. To me, that's scummy. I found myself liking the main character less and less not because of his interactions with other females, but because he consistently allowed himself to become party to acts which he would later try to play innocent about and act oblivious to. He could stop himself or push away any one of them, at any time, making clear about his choice to be with Louise, but he doesn't. The only time I witnessed him return to the character he seems to be in this first season is in season 4 when he tells Henrietta that he's sorry about what happened between them (when they kissed), but that he ultimately loves Louise. Granted, she said it wouldn't stop HER feelings for him, but at least HE made himself clear. At no other time does he initiate any sort of break with the others.

Honestly, leading the other girls on the way he does really messes with their minds.
