| One word: damn! I like that the back of the volume 3 book says, and I quote: "in one of Battle Royale's most controversial segments, the sordid dealings of Mitsuko Souma come into focus in the soon-to-be infamous side story, Fallen Angel." And I'd like to bring attention to "soon-to-be infamous". They knew they were going far with this one. They knew they were treading a controversial path, and it was evidently done on purpose. I think this side story was good, with an asterisk. It was good but it went needlessly far for shock value.When someone reads Battle Royale, they know they're in for a lot of death and murder and betrayal and dramatic moments. We signed up for that. Much fewer people signed up for a side story that can basically be described as fucked up hentai. That said, it did bring forth some of Mitsuko's inner workings; it's shown us how she ticks. I can appreciate that. And while kept to a minimum, I enjoyed that they showed some interactions between her and her partners in crime, Hirono and Yoshimi, at the end. |
