How about Shinbo Akiyuki's work (Ef, SZS, SoulTaker)? The guy makes a huge effort to convey his stories through metaphorical and abstract imagery and turning his less than interesting source material into eye-popping animation. If Yasuhiro Yoshiura's collection qualifies for this club than Shinbo more than qualifies.

Can we add them to the list?

Voices of a Distant Star

Place Promised in Our Early Days

5 Centimeters Per Second

True XD

shegoblin | Aug 26, 2008 12:46 PM
well, I think it's not just 5cm/s but all Makoto Shinkai's work... [except Egao.. it sucks..]

5 Centimeters Per Second was an amazing anime, I thought it was very artsy!

I guess this group is not meant to be really active, huh? ;) Personally I don't mind too much, but perhaps I'll send out some mass message to everyone in near future.

people? where art thou?

235wegsdg | Aug 12, 2008 11:50 AM
Good choice :P It is definitely one of the most artsy animes!

Sasa | Aug 12, 2008 3:41 AM
Sure, sure, feel free to add screenshots. I chose the Diary of Tortov Roddle one since it's one of my favourites of all these anime :)

I added some screenshots I made myself and different from the ones I have taken for my club; you can do whatever you want with them - delete them, changing their description, change the main picture, ... ^_^

xaemar: Yeah, I know quite a lot of anime people, but barely any of them are interested in obscure, artsy animation. And those few who are mostly only know Kaiba and that's it.
Generally, I'm open to everything that could fall into the difficult to describe category of 'artsiness', so I added the series you've mentioned of course ^^
I wouldn't recommend Aachi wa Ssipak at all, by the way. It was very random and the focus on, err, shit is very disturbing, but it's definitely an interesting and somehow amusing film.

Ardeur: Yeah, Mononoke definitely is 'artsy'. I never watched it because I thought it's a continuation of Ayakashi which I have dropped at some point, thanks for mentioning it. :)

Just watched Kaiba. Astonishing anime really, great style and story.
As for recommendations... Mononoke tv. Very artistic style of animation, smth similar to Gankutsuou imo.

Yes. I would say that surreal animes are mostly artsy but not all artsy animes are surreal... Like a square is a rectangle and not the opposite.

Thanks for your precisions! You're right, I watched Inaka Isha and I found it brilliant! I knew it under an other name.

I'll watch Aachi wa Ssipak; I'm curious about it... It was recommended for Dead Leaves but I didn't like this anime very much; it was too much random and fast spaced to my tastes.

I'll watch Eve no Jikan for sure as I liked Mizu no Kotoba and especially Pale Cocoon a lot.

Maybe the other ones one day as well...

You should include, in your "Anime Relations", 1001 Nights (probably the most "artsy" anime I know; it's like moving paintings and it makes me think about Phantasia, but better and more mature; it also has tons of animation techniques), Ginga no Uo URSA minor BLUE (from the creator of Glassy Ocean), Neo Tokyo (3 shorts, but the first has a really unique and surreal animation; very nice!), Open Your Mind (Mezame no Hakobune; it's like a artistic "video clip") and Noiseman Sound Insect (animation done by Massaki Yuasa and very unique; by studio 4C)... But you decide either one you want to include ^_^

It's nice to see some people interesting in less popular/commercial/generic animations out there! :P

Yeah, there is quite an overlap between "artsy" and "surreal", it's true, much more than with the "unusual", "mindfuck", "psychological" etc. groups. At any rate, I suppose that art in anime spans much more than surrealism, as Aachi wa Ssipak, Tekkon Kinkreet or Windy Tales don't look surreal, they 'just' have a very distinct style.

Hm, let's see.
Aachi wa Ssipak looks quite weird, is mostly a random adventure story about, well, shit.
Eve no Jikan is the big hit of today, a seemingly generic science fiction, but beautifully animated. By the same people as Mizu no Kotoba and Pale Cocoon. (http://www.concretebadger.net/blog/2008/08/05/eve-no-jikan-first-impressions-are-friends-electric/)
Gankutsuou is a visually very astonishing adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, but the story is a bit ridiculous and watered down in my opinion.
Inaka Isha is a brilliant adaptation of Kafka's Country Doctor, but it looks like you've watched it.
Night on the Galactic Railroad and Spring and Chaos are (I think) by the same people, and I can't say much because I haven't watched either of them. Also related to classics of japanese literature.

The only animes I didn't see in your "Anime Relations" are Aachi wa Ssipak, Eve no Jikan, Gankutsuou, Inaka Isha, Night on the Galactic Railroad and Spring and Chaos but I heard about most of them. Are they good?

Great club! This club is somewhat related to my "Surreal animation" club as I put only artsy animes...
