Robert-François DamiensA French domestic servant whom was one of the few people to view Charles as a human rather than a soulless executioner. He is steadfast in his belief that everything he takes must be earned but allows Charles to take care of his son after he is diagnosed with scurvy. He promises to pay Charles back with the money from selling his farming equipment and sets off by horse to his former home with Charles. This is all for naught because his home was torn down and he saw a woman who had stolen his wife, Flora's dress. He and Charles later look through the gates of Versailles, pondering what really makes him so insignificant compared to royalty.
