Anime Relations: Saishuu Heiki Kanojo
Second episode they start with a theme song that I don’t remember being in the first. I don’t like it, too slow & soft for what I think would be good for the series.

They start with Shuji running to Chise, they’re saying it’s okay if they’re a little late, there is then a slightly long shot of Shuji’s face, I hate this animation, it’s lacking so much detail. There’s then a voice over of him talking about how she’s slow. We then have an awkward episode title pop up, once again with unfitting music. The episode is titled “I’m growing.” This is not giving me hope for this episode.

Suddenly we’re on top of the roof at school & she is telling Shuji how she has become this “ultimate weapon,” that some “important looking people” told her, but they used “difficult words” so she doesn’t understand what’s going on with herself. He says he’s ok with it since she can go back to normal but of course she then tells him that she forgot to ask that….he’s mad but she tells him that she’ll ask when she has to go back for training…..& then she pulls out a bento that she made for him……She says she doesn’t know if it will taste good & that she asked her friend how girlfriends are supposed to act & her friend told her to get him lunch…at this point all I can say is WOW.

He smiles & takes it. Her pager then goes off. I paused here, the animation is so ugly. It looks like he doesn’t have a nose, like it got smeared with an eraser. Then find out that her pager is from the military & that they picked her up after the bombing. I am now taking this moment to wonder how/ why their school is intact if the city was bombed unless they really live that far away from where it happened but I am thinking it’s not that far. Also at this point I can’t help but notice the lack of detail for Chise, especially in her eyes, I don’t know if they did that because she is technically part robot but it annoys me greatly. Then I took note of Shuji’s eyes & besides his glasses his eyes are just black circles…..this is an anime, where is the big detailed eyes!

She then leaves him. He opens the bento & she has spelled out his name & made a heart…..*facepalm*. A voice over of shuji then tells us that the air raid was a week ago & that 47,800 people died. & that 66,300 are missing. His friends then come up & pick at his bento, he is annoyed at this, & I can’t help but notice that his friends look like they could be twins & that they’re sitting awkwardly close to him.
Later that night Shuji reads the journal in his bed, she has written about how she thinks what has happened to her body is some kind of punishment, & that she is embarrassed of herself & she thanks him for dating her & apologizes. Shuji runs out of his house & down the street & who else is floating in the air then Chise! In her school uniform with metal wings none the less &there’s some strange rock type music playing now & then there’s a voice over of Shuji saying that he “understands now”

She looks at him & her wings instantly dissolve; she falls abruptly onto the ground. Shuji then trips on his shoelace & lands next to her. She apologizes to him. At this point I am ready to stop watching, but I will conquer this series.
He sees that her shirt is torn up & her back has marks & then flashes back to the air raid when he saw her. He moves to touch her & she shouts “I’m home!” they then stare at each other……all I am thinking is what the heck?

He then yells at her for flying home instead of coming home normally……she says she was worried she wouldn’t make curfew. He then tells her “welcome home.”
I don’t think this is cute.
She then says “im home” & starts to cry; he tells her the lunch was good & starts asking her questions about the “ultimate weapon”. She just tells him its top secret & he is thinking in his head about how it’s just hurting her by pretending that it is all a bad dream.

She starts talking about how she was told not to tell anyone & he tells her that it’s ok for him to know because they’re “lovers” & she looks at him & tears up, I am not moved. They say it’ll be their secret.

We see pages from the journal & that Chise told Shuji that she’s “growing.” We then see them at school playing volleyball in PE. The building starts shaking, nothing happened though.

There is then a scene where Chise’s friend is talking to Shuji about how Chise is not eating anything & tells him that she assumes he told Chise that she’s getting fat. He leaves & walks over to his friends looking at some strange aircrafts flying over, one mentions that he saw a strange one by itself the day before & there is a voice over of Chise saying she’s growing.

Shuji goes to the class room where he is supposed to meet Chise after school & he finds her on the floor stuffing her face. He is just looking at her in disbelief with his ugly, ugly face. She says that she was trying not to eat so she would stop growing but she’s just too hungry & she can feel herself growing & gaining strength. In the middle of her rambling he just grabs her & holds her, there is a close up of her face & for once we see some detail in her expression. She moves back from him a little & they awkwardly stare at each other. He leans in to kiss her & she pushes him away shouting no, he looks confused. He apologizes & she then tells him that the military is watching her now. He is angered that she is just letting herself be watched & he tells her that she won’t be a good weapon anyway because she’s an emotional wreck.

They look at each other & he shouts “lets run away!” she nods. They then show him peddling very quickly on his bike with her on the back. A voice over of Shuji says that “his impulse would change both of their fates” & that “looking back that was their last chance.” She can sense where the people chasing her are & she starts to cry she tells Shuji not to look at her & bombs start falling out of her back, bouncing off the pavement to take off…...

Then they cut to Chise holding Shuji under a tree somewhere. He asks if she thinks they should go to Tokyo & she tells him that Tokyo isn’t there anymore.
A helicopter appears. Chise starts glowing but Shuji grabs her & she stops. She falls to her knees saying “but I’m a weapon. You’re the one that said to run away.” She then basically says that her body has a mind of its own & then she kisses Shuji. She tells him that there’s no such thing as a weapon that doesn’t kill. She then says it might be better if she dies, at this point I wish she would, I would be fine with this being a two episode series.

He then pushes her down, kisses her, interlocks their hands & then gropes her. They look at each other for a second & he undoes her shirt, she tells him not to look at her. She has a big red mark in the center of her chest. He says the truth was much more profound & cruel than he realized.

This is how this episode ends.

Just reading through this, if I was someone thinking about watching the episode, I wouldn’t. It’s as unbelievable and terrible as it sounds.

Anime Relations: Saishuu Heiki Kanojo
Saikano review

Episode 1

This anime started out innocently enough. The sound of Shuji breathing as he walks through some snowy woods, at this moment I am waiting for something unexpected or for some romantic dialog to come over, and we get; Shuji reflecting on his time spent there with Chise. We then get a look at Shuji ‘s face, his gray hair and glasses make me think he’s old. He’s telling the audience about how he and Chise fell in love at this spot and at this moment I am ready to take on a not-so-well-animated romantic slice of life.

The anime then flashes back to him and Chise walking to school and we see that he looks exactly the same which leaves me to wonder why he is so ugly. We then get our first look at Chise, struggling to get up the hill, and we then fully realize why he said at the beginning that he was the only one who could love her. It also saddens me to see that Chise is no better animated than Shuji, there is such a lack of detail in her eyes, which is fitting given what happens later but for crying out loud, this was made in 2002! The animation leaves much to be desired.

And then as if to sway you to not watch anymore Shuji starts listing the things that are unlikable about Chise, which are all the cliché things clumsy anime girl characters always do. He even tells her that she should go back to taking the bus, this guy does not like Shuji at all at this point, why is she his girlfriend? Also at this point you notice the music and in my opinion it is too light and does not fit.

Then as if only to be more annoying (and she has barely had any lines yet) she pulls out an exchange diary for them to share…..these two are in high school, not grade school, what is this? And then of course as soon as Shuji mentions Chise’s dislikable friend that gave her the idea, she comes riding in loudly on her bike, yelling at them to get to school. At this point my mind is going “cliché, cliché, cliché.”

Shuji then tells us that Chise asked him out and he told her yes but that he really doesn’t know if he even likes her. They then cut to Shuji sitting on the roof with his friends, telling them about the exchange diary, somewhere in their conversation it is mentioned that texting and the internet are banned, which I found very strange. They then show him watching her playing volleyball with some other girls, actually taking an interest in her, and of course she gets hit in the head. (Cliché!) My hopes on this relationship picking up are very slim at this point.

There is a short scene of Shuji & his friends noticing someF-15’s flying over. For someone who has no idea what this anime is about getting into it this is actually a decent use of foreshadowing. One friend comments though “nothing will happen.”
Shuji tries to write Chise back in the journal but he’s no good at it. He comments to himself that having a girlfriend is “a lot of trouble.” We then have a pan over to a photo that we can’t really make out and he says “it was the same back then.”
We fade out and come back to Shuji and Chise walking through a wooded area in spring, it then goes into a flashback for Chise about getting Shuji to write in the journal, we find out all it says is “I can’t do this, let’s meet after school.” Chise looks very defeated by this but it brought a smirk to my face, men, most of them are the same…..

So there at this overlook alone which is where the episode starts at. There is this great view of the city, and he says to her “I wanted to show you this before the end.” I am not sure if this is intended foreshadowing or not. He then tells her that he does not want to date her. And of course; she cries. Then clearly as a defense mechanism she tells him that she’s tired of him too and that she just wanted to date someone. But then she goes on to say that she liked him for a long time, at this point and then the conversation turns to him saying that she’s cute. The conversation takes a few more turns and then they decide that they’re still in a relationship and want to try to fall in love. She gets him to say he’ll write in the exchange journal and in return he asks her to kiss him. We then have a slightly awkward kiss, more her closing her eyes and him kissing her. She comments that his heart is really pounding and he replies “yours too.”

There’s a voice over of Shuji saying how it was certain they would fall in love. Then then show them saying good night, he’s not even walking her all the way home, what a guy….and then she asks if it’s okay for her to call him sometimes, he’s your boyfriend! You should feel able to call him every day! We then see that a group of men are following Chise.

A little later in the episode Shuji is shopping at the mall with his bros. the mall starts shaking and they assume it’s an earthquake, so ya know logically they run outside. A group of foreign planes is bombing them. At this point I am a little disappointed that this isn’t just a romantic slice of life.

And I can’t help but notice how much better the animation of the bombing is than of the characters. Shuji then notices a strange red glowing thing flying around. So he runs the direction its going. He gets blasted along with some ruble. When he wakes up he’s bleeding, he looks around the smoke and fire,( ’ya know because his glasses aren’t dirty or cracked after that) and who else to walk up but Chise with a giant gun for an arm. This being said the first time I watched this episode I was surprised. She reverts back to a normal human body and he walks up and holds her while thinking that he should of noticed that when he hugged her he didn’t feel a heartbeat.

At this point I am annoyed with the sudden twists and turns but I am still intrigued to find out what happens to Chise.
