Summer 2020 Season Wrap-up
Anime Relations: Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Kan, Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season, Deca-Dence, Fruits Basket 2nd Season, Dokyuu Hentai HxEros, Kanojo, Okarishimasu, The God of High School
I'm bored and I don't want to do schoolwork, so I'm writing my thoughts about this closing anime season.
My overall take on this season would be: goddamn this season was shit. Approximately 0 of the new anime that came out this season were remotely any good, and extremely few were enjoyable. Even some of the most popular new shows this season like Rental Girlfriend (2/10) and Uzaki (-/10) were so cringe inducing to the point of my wanting to quit watching seasonals entirely. I had a lot of expectations for God of High School (3/10), it being the second manhwa to ever be adapted into anime by a big studio, was extremely disappointed by the shallow characters and nonsensical plot. Deca-Dence (4/10) also showed potential, but also became nonsensical and boring. Of the shows I actually ended up finishing, there was one I actually had fun watching, and that was, of all things, Dokyuu Hentai HxEros (5/10). HxEros, in fact, was so unapologetically garbage that it became fucking hilarious--a feat not many are able to achieve. Overall, the new anime this season were pretty garbo.
On the other hand, we had a good batch of sequels this season, many of which I felt pleasure in watching. This season gave way to the second half of Fruits Basket S2, and oh fucking boy this half delivered. I, being only exposed to Fruits Basket initially through the first season of the remake that wired last year, was a fan of the series and concept to begin with. However, the first half of S2 made me worry a bit, since it did feel a bit boring and dull, though not bad by any means. The second half of this season of Fruits Basket is a different story. Episode after episode, I found myself being blown away by new developments in the story and character, and by the end, I found myself a huge fan of this work. I cannot wait for the third and final season airing next year. 9/10, Tohru is fucking adorable.
Another sequel that aired this season is the third and final season of Oregairu. I have watched the first two seasons quite a while ago, so I did not remember too much of what had happened before this season. However, I shamefully watched at least 50 clips from the first two seasons on YT to recap, so I was ready to go by the time the second episode aired. I was also a huge fan of Oregairu, so I was even more so excited to watch this season. And make me excited it fucking did. I enjoyed every minute of this final season of Oregairu; I would place it with the greats. 9/10, Irohas is best girl.
The last sequel I want to talk about is Re:zero. The first season of Re:zero was one of the first shows I watched seasonally, and I remember absolutely loving the experience. I have since forgotten a lot of the plotpoints in the first season, but I remember enjoying it. So when I learned that a second season is airing this season, I was really excited. And to be honest, it did live up to my expectations of being, well, Re:zero, but I didn't feel the same level of enjoyment watching the show as I initially did. Don't get me wrong, S2 isn't bad at all, but it didn't give me the same level of emotional investment as S1 did. Still, I enjoyed watching this a ton and I'm excited for part 2. 7/10, the Great Rabbit thing is fucking terrifying.
I think there are a few more shows that I did watch but am forgetting, but if I don't remember them, they probably don't matter (LOL). Those are my thoughts for the Summer 2020 season of anime, and I'm looking forward to the next season.
But I probably won't watch too many because I'll be busy to an unholy degree for the next 4 months, oops.
Also this thing is kind of a stream of consciousness post, so many parts may not make any fucking sense whatsoever, and I'm too lazy to read over what I wrote.
