Yuri, femslash and how they’re different from their male counterparts
I learned about the existence of yuri at about the same time I got into yaoi. However, I didnt get into it until fairly recently. Of course I’d given reading the odd Harley/Ivy femslash fan fic a shot, but the writing never really grabbed me in the same way the writing for most m/m relationships in fan fiction did. Then, years later, a friend of mine recommended Saburouta’s Citrus to me, and it changed the way I looked at lesbians in pop culture and fandom.

5 ways Yuri!!! On Ice made anime history
Anime Relations: Yuri!!! on Ice, Yuri!!! on Ice: Yuri Plisetsky GPF in Barcelona EX - Welcome to The Madness
Yuri!!! On Ice was easily the most popular anime of the fall 2016 season. Even before the BL undertones were switched out for overtones the show managed to set itself apart from many others among its peers as both a sports anime and a BL anime. Just how does Yuri!!! On Ice differentiate itself from the competition, and how could these tropes be used to change anime up into something new?
The gayness wasn't even the most impressive thing about YOI!

Fujoshi 101: How to be a respectful fangirl

A fujoshi (lit: rotten girl) is a fan of yaoi who self-identifies as female. Fujoshi make up about 80% of the yaoi fandom in general. It has long been believed that all fujoshi are straight girls who watch gay anime porn for their own entertainment and it has been for a long time, but there’s been a shift recently. Only 50-60% of fujoshi self-identify as heterosexual, which is a huge difference in percentage with the general public.
Ladies, today we’re going to try something different. Instead of educating people about what we do on the internet and in real life in a way your grandmother could understand, I’m going to be educating you, the fujoshi, on what you shouldn’t do on the internet or real life in a way your grandmother could understand.
Don't give a damn about our bad reputation? Maybe don't read more on Qulture Club!

I was probably around 14 years old when I was first introduced to yaoi. Back in the day I was very much into shoujo (manga and anime produced for teenage girls), so usually in the stories there’s a girl and a boy and they get together. Then I got into a show where 90% of the cast was male, and what the fandom did with that fact fascinated me. Instead of pairing the girl with the boys, the fans started pairing the boys together.
A quick google search later I found out that there are actually entire manga and anime focused on platonic, romantic and sexual relationship between two male characters. I thought that was pretty neat since I’ve never seen anything focused on relationships between male characters in this kind of way in western culture.

Akira
Anime Relations: Akira
I just went into Akira without knowing the slightest thing about the story and holy shit I don’t know how I feel.
Like, 7 years ago my cousin’s husband recommended me some anime movies when he found out I liked anime, those movies were Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Back then I was very much into shoujou anime and had no interest in watching movies like Akira and Ghost in the Shell. To be honest, I’m not sure how 14 year old me would have come out of it. Maybe I would have dropped my anime hobby faster, maybe I would have been Kaneda for carnaval the year after. Who knows.
This movie is so fucking gorgeous though, it’s well animated, very detailed and I loved it. Granted, the gore and body horror was a bit much at times, and sometimes the story was a little had to follow but that’s probably on me.
Moral of the story, kids: when your cousin’s husband recommends you an anime you look up the details first.

Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus
Anime Relations: Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus
I am a huge fan of the original manga. With that, you can imagine how excited I was to see this season did something that no other season of Kuroshitsuji ever did.
Adapt one arc of the manga accurately in one short season, showing nothing less and nothing more.
And I loved it.
Honestly, I wish that was what the first few seasons did. But instead they squished three arcs together and then had to get creative for the last bit of the first season, and doing a completely original second season, both of which became kind of a clusterf*ck if you ask me. But I digress.
I loved this arc when it first came out and eagerly awaited every chapter each month, and I'd be lying if I didn't say watching this anime made me more than a little nostalgic. The empathy I felt for the circus characters was still there, and I was happy to see the ending of the season left me just as devastated as the arc despite not managing to cry this time. (Though I won't deny it got hard during the end credits and when they killed off Doll.)
Now that's out of the way, I'm excited to watch the Book of Murder OVAs, and I can't wait for the anime movie of the Titanic/zombie arc!

Kyokai no Kanata
Anime Relations: Kyoukai no Kanata
I swear to God, the first anime I watch to completion in years completely wrecks me.
The animation in this show is so beautiful, but I guess that was to be expected of KyoAni.
I personally was very happy with the 'filler' episodes in the middle that split up the two main arcs of the story, the first of which I thought was pretty intense (and watched in a single night) and the second one which had me crying like a baby at least three times.
I'm currently still recovering from a good 15 minutes of crying, and I'll be fine again soon, but I just wanna say that I love this anime. 10/10 for experience, would watch (and cry over) again.
