my friend put this in a note on facebook: SO TRUE.

"ok this is a thing i copied from some page here on facebook and it helps prove the point ive been trying to prove for a long time now it may hae a few thing dont like about it but it still proves my point ANIME AND CAROONS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

these are some definitions of each

Anime (noun) :
1. A style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes. [Merriam-Webster]
2. A Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality. [Dictionary.com]

Cartoon (noun) :
1: A preparatory design, drawing, or painting.
2 a: A drawing intended as satire, caricature, or humor.
2 b: Comic strip.
3: Animated cartoon.
4: A ludicrously simplistic, unrealistic, or one-dimensional portrayal or version. [Merriam-Webster]

People like to toss out the arguement that Anime IS a cartoon based solely on the fact they're both Animated. That anything drawn, is a cartoon. That is very incorrect. To start, Animation encompasses a lot of other styles such as CGI, Stop-Motion, Classic (Traditional Animation - Cartoons / Anime) and heck even flipbooks. The same way you wouldn't call an Abstract (cubism) work of art from Picasso, a work of Realism like you would find from Da Vinci. They're completely different and even though they may share some common elements, they deserve some respect and should be called exactly what they are.

At the end of the day, cartoons have their place. I personally still enjoy watching some cartoons. But as they're simply comedy based and 9/10 times are intended solely for children, this incorrect association needs to end. Not to be confused with Animated Series, which have a deeper plot and are not satires (comedies). People also label them cartoons as well. But that's a different debate.

As there are many different types and styles of Anime that range as greatly as the different books and stories you can find on a bookshelf at Borders. There are some Anime that are comedy based, but thats just a drop in the bucket compared to the number of Anime out there with much deeper plots and great storylines. That they all deserve the respect not to be called, something for children, a cartoon. You would NOT let a child, watch anime like Elfin Lied, Berserk, Hellsing and maybe even some Episodes of Evangelion would be a bit much. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, watch them, you now have some names of Anime to see just a small basis for this debate to go.

Pass it on.
Educate.
Discuss Anime.
Debate the subject."
