My Dress-Up Darling. Is it everything we hoped for?
Anime Relations: Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru
It goes without saying there was a ton of hype for this show going into this season. Hell, Marin was collectively nominated best girl of the year forty seconds into the first trailer.
With episode six out, I think it is an appropriate time to contemplate the show, where it's been, and the potential of where it's going. So, My Dress-Up Darling. Is it everything we hoped for?
Upon viewing episodes one through five, I think it is fair to say the show delivers (at a basic level) what it promised, a slice-of-life romance with some grade-A fan service—nothing more, nothing less. However, episode six was a significant turning point for the show's trajectory. It is my opinion that episode six set up My Dress-Up Darling to go above and beyond just a good show that we all forget about by next season.
I want to talk about everything episode six does right. First off, it was incredibly refreshing to see the table turn as Marin realized *she* was head over heels for Wakana Gojou. I was under the impression that the show would remain with the - oblivious girl is friends with the lonely loser who is madly in love with her - trope, and maybe she realizes that he is the one during an episode eleven firework scene or something. Marin realizing her feelings at this time is so appropriate as it sets up the two characters for a confession that is likely to be hilarious. Will it be a battle of the confessions like in *love is war* to see who will say I love you first, or will the show pull a HoriMiya where we see the two protagonists simply admit their feelings with no funny business. I think the truth is somewhere in between, but either way, I cannot wait to see the result next week.
Secondly, we have our new supporting character Sajuna Inui. When I first saw her at the start of episode six, I instantly thought the show was trying to stir the pot by adding another girl into the mix. Later in the episode, it is made pretty clear that even after Gojou sees her naked, Inui is not a threat to the Marin + Gojou status quo. She will likely just be used as a vehicle to bring Marin deeper into the cosplay world or show off more of Gojou's cosplay crafting talent. Either way, Kudos to the show for doing something different.
So my honest opinion is that the show is what we hoped for, but it also has the potential to be something even better. Episode six was a significant turning point. Let's see if My Dress-Up Darling can continue to deliver.
