(*Note - "salty" is a term used in the fighting game community to describe someone being bitter as if they ate something salty. And "runback" (also commonly used in the FGC) is just another word for "revenge match".)

Today, I went to my third Vanguard tournament at the same shop I always go to, and there were a lot more participants than the last two I attended. There were at least 15 participants, including 3 people who used Royal Paladins, 3 Kagero, 2 Nova Grapplers, 1 Granblue, 2 Gold Paladins, 1 Narukami, and 1 Spike Brothers. I was the lone Oracle Think Tank user. Since the last tournament, I modified it with some more copies of Amaterasu, Silent Tom, and Chocolat (all individually bought online) and fixed some of the other problems with the deck.

My first opponent was the Nova Grappler user who beat me in the last tournament. My first thought when I learned that he would be my first opponent was "Aw, nuts." But I regained my composure, being prepared to lose but still ready to win. Remembering all of the trouble that I had against his deck, I switched my tactics to try and cripple his. To my surprise and delight, the deck alterations and change in strategy that I made allowed me to defeat him 2-0, thus getting revenge for the last tournament.

My 2nd opponent was the Narukami user. It did not go nearly as well as the last match I had; I lost 0-2.

My 3rd opponent was a girl. Gasp! A girl playing children's card games which are dominated by mostly men? Yes, girl gamers in both the video-game and card-game communities do exist. In fact, there was another girl who entered the tournament, but I did not get to play against her. Anyway, my 3rd opponent was using a Royal Paladin deck, but she did not understand the rules of the game very well. Her inexperience led to her downfall as I defeated her 2-0. During and after the match, I discussed with her about some of the rules that she didn't seem to comprehend, but she was just dumbfounded by my explanations. My guess is that someone has been giving her false information about the game.

My 4th opponent was a Kagero user (a different one than the last tournament). I won the first game with Amaterasu and Silent Tom, to which my opponent did not enjoy (but I did). However, the next 2 games went mostly in his favor as he won the entire set 2-1.

In the end, my record was 2-2, and I wound up in 6th place out of 15 or so entrants. To be honest, I was expecting to be dead last, but that didn't happen. So, I was more than satisfied with getting 6th, considering that this is only my 3rd tournament appearance.

Well, that's it for now. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Another day, another pair of box openings for the Calvary of Black Steel set:

1) CoBS box #3

R:
1 of each R + 1 more Dudley Daisy

RR:
1 Reckless Express
1 Dragonic Lawkeeper
1 Martial Arts Mutant, Master Beetle

RRR:
1 Demonic Lord, Dudley Emperor

2) CoBS box #4

R:
1 of each R + 1 more Black Dragon Knight, Vortimer

RR:
1 Reckless Express
1 Dragonic Lawkeeper
1 White Dragon Knight, Pendragon

RRR:
1 Demonic Lord, Dudley Emperor

Not much to say for these two box openings other than how I feel stupid for buying a "Dudley Emperor" beforehand. I was really hoping to get at least 1 more "Spectral Duke Dragon" out of one of these boxes, but it didn't happen. I guess 2 more "Lawkeeper" cards make up for it.

Since these two box openings were kind of lackluster, I'll spice things up in this blog post by talking about my Vanguard tournament experiences thus far.

I started going to a bi-weekly Vanguard tournament at a card shop. When I first attended it, I was a bit hesitant to enter because of some bad experiences when I played in some Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments from a long time ago. But I figured "I shouldn't take losing so seriously, and just have fun. It's only a game, after all". With that mentality, and despite having a huge zit on my face that day, I toughened up and entered my first Vanguard tournament. Nonetheless, I was still intimidated by the other players as I was scared to open up a conversation with people who were total strangers at the time. Surprisingly, there were only 5 participants in the tournament, myself included. The tournament was double-elimination style with "best 2 games out of 3" sets. I was contemplating on which deck I would use: my Angel Feather deck or Granblue deck. I ultimately decided on Granblue because I had overall better cards in it. With my deck chosen, I stepped up to face my first opponent.

(From this point onward, out of respect for their privacy, my opponents will remain anonymous.)

My first opponent used and still uses an Oracle Think Tank deck. I surprisingly won in the first game; my opponent commented how I drew 3 heal triggers throughout the battle, but the highlight for me was that I won with only 4 cards left in my deck. Winning the first game gave me some hope, thinking "I actually have a chance". However, that thought soon disappeared when my opponent beat me 2 games straight with "CEO Amaterasu".

All hope wasn't lost though. It was a double-elimination tournament, so now I was in the loser's bracket. My next opponent used an Angel Feather deck with the "Ergodiel" theme. There was this one game in which neither of us had any grade 1 cards to ride, so we were both stuck with grade 0 cards for a while. Nevertheless, I managed to win 2-1.

My final opponent of the tournament was another Granblue user. I won the first game, but the set was called off due to tournament time constraints. So, at the end of the day, not only was I awarded a couple of "Breaker of Limits" booster packs, but I also got some Vanguard swag (a Vanguard folder, a DVD containing the first 4 episodes of the anime, and a book containing the first chapter of the manga series in English) and a pack containing a special card that is only given out to tournament entrants. So, whether or not I went 0-2 throughout the tournament, I got something out of it just for entering.

The next tournament (with the same rules and format) at the same card shop had about twice as many entrants than the last time. From what I can remember, there were at least 2 Royal Paladin users, 2 Gold Paladin users (one of them had "Dragonic Lawkeeper" splashed in the deck), 2 Granblue users (neither of which were the person from the last tourney), 1 Kagero user, 1 Nova Grappler user, 1 Angel Feather user (not the same person as the one in the last tourney), and 2 Oracle Think Tank users (the same person from before and myself included). So yeah, I took the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach and used an Oracle Think Tank deck for this tournament. With some support from the Calvary of Black Steel set, I managed to make a decent Oracle deck.

Anyway, my first opponent was a kid who admitted that he was new to Vanguard. He was using the Gold Paladin trial deck, unmodified. I beat him 2-0, but it was kind of a shallow victory since my opponent was a newbie. I felt like a bad guy for beating a kid in this children's card game. Nonetheless, I gave the kid some helpful advice in the middle of and after the battle.

My next opponent was the Nova Grappler user. My unfamiliarity with playing against Nova Grapplers ultimately lead to my defeat, losing 0-2.

While waiting for my next opponent, I was challenged by a Granblue user. I accepted, and so we played one game to pass the time. My opponent showed some irritation when I had "Amaterasu" in play, which was pretty funny to me. Despite him using "Ice Prison Necromancer, Cocytus", a card that I don't even have and therefore am unfamiliar with, I still managed to win.

My next and final opponent of the day was the Kagero user. He was not as talkative as the other players, and he constantly did things like taking back cards he just played back to his hand and forgetting to activate some card effects. Not only did I let him be a "taker-backer", but I also reminded him of activating some of his cards' effects that he forgot to use. I'm such a nice guy, aren't I? Nevertheless, I won 2-0.

Again, the tournament was cut short due to time, but since I placed in a respectable spot, I was awarded a free CoBS booster pack.

That's all for now. I'll be sure to attend more of these bi-weekly Vanguard tournaments and show my support for this great game. And so should you! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and enjoy the rest of your day!

I got 2 boxes of the Calvary of Black Steel set, and here are my findings:

1) Cavalry of Black Steel box #1

R:

1 of each R except Dudley Daisy + 1 more Twin Shine Swordsman, Marhaus & 1 more Jelly Beans

RR:

1 Dragonic Lawkeeper
1 White Dragon Knight, Pendragon
1 Origin Mage, Ildona

RRR:

1 Spectral Duke Dragon

Remember when I said that "Amaterasu" is the most overpowered card in the game in my last blog post? I think I may retract that statement because "Lawkeeper" looks even more powerful.

Getting "Ildona" is pointless when there are almost no other Shadow Paladins released in English yet. Oh, how I want to use Shadow Paladins so much!

2) CoBS box #2

R:

1 of each R + 1 more Bewitching Officer, Lady Butterfly

RR:

1 White Dragon Knight, Pendragon
1 Reckless Express
1 Martial Arts Mutant, Master Beetle

RRR:

1 Spectral Duke Dragon

I guess it was a smart idea to buy "Dudley Emperor" beforehand since I got 2 "Spectral Duke" cards from these two box openings. And I got the other RR cards from this opening, meaning that I already collected at least 1 of each card in this entire set (minus the SP cards)!

Also, with these 2 box openings, it seems that the ratio for the CoBS set is 1 RRR: 3 RR: 11 R.

I'll probably get 2 more boxes of this set, but that's it for now. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and enjoy the rest of your day! I know I will be! :)

July 10th, 2012
So I recently have been getting into "Cardfight!! Vanguard", a new trading card game that's starting to pick up some steam in the US (at least, I hope it is). Beginning now, I decided to keep track of all the Rare (R), Double Rare (RR), Triple Rare (RRR), and Special Rare (SP) cards that I've been getting from the 30-card booster boxes that I bought in the order that I purchased and opened them as best as I can remember. I will also provide my personal thoughts, initial reactions, and strange discoveries about the box openings. Without further ado...

1) Breaker of Limits box #1

R:
1 copy of each R

RR:
1 Cosmo Healer, Ergodiel
1 Core Memory, Armaros
1 Love Machine Gun, Nociel
1 Pure Keeper, Requiel
1 Deadly Swordmaster

RRR:
1 Circular Saw, Kiriel
1 Battle Cupid, Nociel
1 Incandescent Lion, Blond Ezel

As you can see, I got at least one copy of each of the Angel Feather cards from just this one box. And I got "Blond Ezel" in the second-to-last pack of the box!

2) Onslaught of Dragon Souls box #1

R:
1 copy of each R + 1 more Treasured, Black Panther & 1 more Dudley Dan

RR:
1 Cheer Girl, Marilyn
1 Witch Doctor of the Abyss, Negromarl
1 Gust Jinn
1 Captain Nightmist
1 Chain-attack Sutherland

RRR:
1 Lion Heat
1 Spirit Exceed
1 Blazing Flare Dragon

3 RRR, 5 RR, and the other 22 are R. When I first noticed this pattern, I thought, "Nah, this can't be right. This is just a coincidence, isn't it?" But then I got to the next box and found...

3) Descent of the King of Knights box #1

R:
1 copy of each R + 1 more Oracle Guardian, Apollon & 1 more Demon Eater

RR:
1 Flash Shield, Iseult
1 Vortex Dragon
1 Wyvern Guard, Barri
1 Maiden of Libra
1 Battle Sister, Chocolat

RRR:
1 Dragonic Overlord
1 Embodiment of Victory, Aleph
1 CEO Amaterasu

Ignoring the fact that I got "Embodiment of Victory, Aleph" but no "Dragon Knight, Aleph", meaning that I can't effectively use it, I got "Amaterasu", the most awesome and overpowered card in the game (in my opinion), and one of each of the "perfect defense" cards of this set. Sweet! And it was then that I realized the 3 RRR: 5 RR: 22 R ratio is not a fluke. At this point, I opened 3 different boxes from different sets and different times, and each time, it was exactly the 3:5:22 ratio. To further prove this...

4) Descent of the King of Knights box #2

R:
1 copy of each R except Demon Eater + 1 more King of Sword, 1 more Lozenge Magus, & 1 more Tyrant, Deathrex

RR:
1 Solitary Knight, Gancelot
1 Wyvern Guard, Barri
1 Battle Sister, Mocha
1 Vortex Dragon
1 Maiden of Libra

RRR:
1 Dragonic Overlord
1 Blaster Blade
1 CEO Amaterasu

As ecstatic as I was when I got another "Amaterasu", "Overlord", "Barri", and the alternate card artwork of "Blaster Blade", the only new card out of this box was "Mocha" (I bought the trial decks that had "Overlord" and "Blade" in them prior to the opening of this box). One weird thing that happened as I opened the packs was that I got the 5 Double Rares and 3 Triple Rares all in a row. I also found it odd how the one Rare card that I didn't get out of this box was "Demon Eater". But whatever...

5) Breaker of Limits box #2

R:
1 copy of each R

RR:
1 Halo Shield, Mark
1 Wyvern Guard, Guld
1 Vajra Emperor, Indra
1 Knight of Fury, Agravain
1 Dragonic Deathscythe

RRR:
1 Player of the Holy Bow, Viviane
1 Beast Deity, Azure Dragon

SP:
1 Vajra Emperor, Indra

When I first bought this box, it was for the intention of strengthening my Angel Feather deck, but no such luck. Instead, I got some more cards to support my Gold Paladin and Narukami decks. And as luck would have it, in addition to getting a copy of each "perfect defense" cards for Gold Paladin and Narukami, I also got my first Special Rare card, and it was in the first pack I opened too! With this, it created a new ratio of 1 SP: 2 RRR: 5 RR: 22 R.

6) Onslaught of Dragon Souls box #2

R:
Does it matter at this point? (read: I can't be bothered to remember)

RR:
1 Young Pegasus Knight
1 Chain-attack Sutherland
1 Silent Tom
1 Witch Doctor of the Abyss, Negromarl
1 Captain Nightmist

RRR:
1 Lion Heat
1 Blazing Flare Dragon
1 Seal Dragon, Blockade

The star of this box opening in my eyes is certainly "Silent Tom", another awesome card that I've been wanting to get.

7) Descent of the King of Knights box #3

R:
1 copy of each R + 1 more King of Sword & 1 more Queen of Heart

RR:
1 Demon Slaying Knight, Lohengrim
1 Future Knight, Llew
1 Battle Sister, Chocolat
1 Lizard Soldier, Conroe
1 Juggernaut Maximum

RRR:
1 Blaster Blade
1 Asura Kaiser
1 Battle Sister, Cocoa

I was a bit peeved when I got "Lohengrim" from this box opening because prior to this, I already bought it online (along with some other cards). And getting "Llew" is a bit pointless when I don't have "Barcgal" (but that won't matter much when the August ban/restriction comes into effect). But my bitterness was soon alleviated by the other notable cards, especially "Cocoa" and "Kaiser".

8) Onslaught of Dragon Souls box #3

R:
(See OoDS box #2)

RR:
1 Cheer Girl, Marilyn
1 Twin Blader
1 Top Idol, Flores
1 Young Pegasus Knight
1 General Seifried

RRR:
1 Lion Heat
1 Scarlet Witch, CoCo

SP:
1 General Seifried

3 separate box openings of this set, and I got "Lion Heat" in each one. Really? Really?! Regardless, I got my second Special Rare card from this opening and some more "perfect defense" cards. And again, the ratio for boxes with an SP card seems to be 1:2:5:22. If you still don't believe me, just wait until you read the next box opening...

9) Breaker of Limits box #3

R:
(Same as the other BoL box openings)

RR:
1 Cosmo Healer, Ergodiel
1 Love Machine Gun, Nociel
1 Pure Keeper, Requiel
1 Deadly Swordmaster
1 Death Seeker, Thanatos

RRR:
1 Battle Cupid, Nociel
1 Desert Gunner, Shiden

SP:
1 Dragonic Kaiser Vermillion

While I may have gotten some more cards to support my Angel Feather and Granblue decks, the real showstopper is a motherfreaking Special Rare "Vermillion"!! This guy costs over $70 on yugiohmint.com, second only to an SP "Blond Ezel". And I got it in the second pack of the box too! Nonetheless, this is yet another example showcasing the 1:2:5:22 ratio when it comes to boxes with a Special Rare card in them.

So, to summarize my collection, including cards that I bought individually and gotten from random separate booster packs but not cards from the trial decks, as of July 10, 2012...

R:
At least 3 of every R in all booster sets

RR:
3 Love Machine Gun, Nociel (one I got in a booster pack separate from the box)
2 Vortex Dragon
2 Wyvern Guard, Barri
2 Battle Sister, Chocolat
2 Maiden of Libra
2 Demon Slaying Knight, Lohengrim (one I bought beforehand as mentioned earlier)
2 Cheer Girl, Marilyn
2 Captain Nightmist
2 Young Pegasus Knight
2 Witch Doctor of the Abyss, Negromarl
2 Chain-attack Sutherland
2 Cosmo Healer, Ergodiel
2 Pure Keeper, Requiel
2 Deadly Swordmaster
1 Flash Shield, Iseult
1 Future Knight, Llew
1 Solitary Knight, Gancelot (not counting the ones that came with the "Blaster Blade" trial deck)
1 Lizard Soldier, Conroe
1 Juggernaut Maximum
1 Battle Sister, Mocha
1 Silent Tom
1 Twin Blader
1 General Seifried
1 Gust Jinn
1 Top Idol, Flores
1 Halo Shield, Mark
1 Knight of Fury, Agravain
1 Death Seeker, Thanatos
1 Core Memory, Armaros
1 Wyvern Guard, Guld
1 Dragonic Deathscythe
1 Vajra Emperor, Indra

RRR:
3 Lion Heat
2 Blaster Blade
2 Dragonic Overlord
2 CEO Amaterasu
2 Blazing Flare Dragon
2 Battle Cupid, Nociel
2 Desert Gunner, Shiden (one I got in a booster pack separate from the box)
1 King of Knights, Alfred (individually bought)
1 Battle Sister, Cocoa
1 Asura Kaiser
1 Embodiment of Victory, Aleph
1 Seal Dragon, Blockade
1 Scarlet Witch, CoCo
1 Spirit Exceed
1 Soul Saver Dragon (individually bought)
1 Circular Saw, Kiriel
1 Incandescent Lion, Blond Ezel
1 Beast Deity, Azure Dragon
1 Player of the Holy Bow, Viviane

SP:
1 General Seifried
1 Vajra Emperor, Indra
1 Dragonic Kaiser Vermillion

And soon to be added to my collection after ordering them online are...

1 RRR Barcgal (even though it's going to be banned from being the starting vanguard come August in America, but it's for completion's sake)
1 RR Dragon Knight, Aleph (to make my "EoV, Aleph" actually useful and for completion's sake again)
1 RR Magician Girl, Kirara (getting it while it's still cheap)
1 RRR Demonic Lord, Dudley Emperor (as a precaution in case I don't get it when I open my upcoming boxes of CoBS)
1 more RRR Battle Sister, Cocoa (why not?)
and 1 more RR Flash Shield, Iseult (because she's my favorite of the "perfect defense" cards and I think she's cute :P)

Well, that's it for now. I wasn't trying to be all "Look at what I got!" Okay, maybe I was, but my primary reason for making this blog was just to keep a record of my booster box openings so I can look back on it and show off the 3:5:22 and 1:2:5:22 ratios. I'll make another record for when I get the Calvary of Black Steel boxes and see what the ratio for that booster box is since there's only 15 packs per box instead of 30 like the other ones. Sorry if I bored you, made you jealous, or confused you with all of this talk about Vanguard. But to anyone reading this who have opened Vanguard boxes, do you also experience these 3:5:22 and 1:2:5:22 ratios, or is it just me? Nevertheless, thank you for taking the time to read this. And don't forget...

"Let's image! Let's Vanguard!"

P.S. - I'm not interested in trading at the moment, so please do not ask if I want to trade.

As some of you may know, my Youtube account was terminated (for copyright infringement by bots). Nonetheless, I was confident that I could get my account back (which is why I never bothered to edit my MAL profile which had that dead link to my terminated account for the last couple of months). So, after two or so months of trying to submit counter-notifications, I finally got through, and now my account is back! I still have 2 strikes on my account, but I'll try to get rid of those as soon as possible. It probably won't be long until bots go hunting again, but until then, enjoy my restored videos!
