Here is some copypasta from 4chan regarding the state of anime:
Oldfag here. And by oldfag I mean I was watching anime in the 70s. I've seen shit like you wouldn't believe. Think the 80s were great eh? Well, bet you never saw shit like Roots Search or Zegoy did you? Sure there were some good series but goddamn it there was horrible horrible eye raping shit out there.

Also saying the majority of shows are otaku pandering moeshit is the most worthless statement ever. It assumes 2 falshoods, that 1 otakus are the main market for anime and 2, all they watch is moeshit.

Since the 1980s there have been two types of anime, anime for general audiences and anime for hardcore fans of anime. General audiences got shows like Heidi of the Alps and Doreamon. Hardcore fans got shows like Bubblegum Crisis and Megazone 23.

Back then of course you either watched family oriented children's shows, you bought OVAs, or you shut the hell up. Now we have more options than ever before.

You're butthurt because there aren't the dark gloomy psychological anime that western audiences prefer. These anime have ALWAYS been less popular in Japan, sales of such series have always been poor with rare exception. Ghost in the Shell is perhaps the most popular such show ever and it had a poor following of only a handful of hardcore anime fans across Japan.

The most popular shows have ALWAYS been family friendly children's oriented anime. What's the top 5 anime in Japan? Eva? GiTS? Cowboy Beebop? Sorry sucker, it's Sazae-san, Doreamon, Crayon Shin-chan, Chibi Maruko-chan, and extra, usually a magical girl show like Pretty Cure, or Jewel Pets, or maybe for just one week a 'big 3' will break the top 5 with a special or epic finale episode to some fight they were having.

Japan is and will always be "the culture of cute". Seriously, google "the culture of cute" and view results. Dark brooding anime you think is the end all beat all perfect form of anime is so few and far between it's hardly worth noting. Seriously, the average Japanese person will know 1 such title and that's Evangelion. Most shows you like and wish were produced more are mediocre successes at best. If there's a movie tie in they may make enough money to go buy a round of beers afterward but don't bet on it.

Just look at K-on. I'm sorry it's an overused example but that's because of it's popularity. It hit top 10 anime while it aired, that's absolutely phenomenal especially for a production studio like Kyoto Animation which started out with "otaku padering shit" like you describe.

You've proven already by your first post that you know nothing about Japanese animation and you're upset that the shows you like aren't popular in a country that doesn't care. Either you learn to love anime in all it's genres or you'll be waiting 2 years between each new show you want to watch, just as it's been for the last 30 years.

Just think of what it's been like for me and my generation. Where you went to the video store and all you could find was copies of Winderia and Zillion and you were happy to have it. We all went FUCKING NUTS when Sailor Moon was put on TV because holy fuck, ANIME? ON TV?

You're a spoiled brat who got to condense 30 years of classic animation into 2 or 3 years then got all butthurt because your favorite shows aren't being made fast enough for you. Dear god man, quit whining. I'm sure there's 2 or 3 series EACH SEASON for you to enjoy. That's fuck tons better than it's ever been. So stop having a hernia and go enjoy some anime.

Anonymous asked, "Are you denying that they are making less robot/fighting shows and making more moe shows than before?"

In a word yes.

Super robot shows are among the most popular genre of anime. They are considered 'family oriented anime' and Japan eats that shit for breakfast. When a super robot show gets put on TV it lasts anywhere from 50-100 episodes in length. The big two are of course Gundam and Macross which has been losing popularity as a family friendly title. Besides them few companies have ever made giant robot anime that have been successful beyond a 26 episode half year run or maybe a 13 episode run for otaku at night or direct to OVA.

You are foolishly comparing late night otaku oriented anime with family friendly runs of super robot shows. Tell me dear friend, how long was the last moeshit show you saw? Other than K-on which was primetime nationwide Japanese TV and hit the top 10 because of it? How about, Toradora? 24 episodes is LAUGHABLE compared to Gundam. How about Mayoi Neko Overrun which I watched and hated, 13 episodes? Give me a fucking break. It is literally apples and oranges, it's why I made the statement that there have always been 2 types of anime, family friendly and otaku pandering anime.

You want family friendly? Go watch Jewel Pet Tinkle. You want otaku? Go watch the latest late night 'otaku padering moeshit'. There's a huge difference between the two, stop getting them confused.

Most people seem to overlook the basics of the rating system. Not everyone, of course, and hopefully not yourself. But here and now I feel compelled to point out the obvious:

A 5/10 score for an anime does not mean it is crap compared to other anime. It doesn't even mean that it is a relatively bad show (that's what a 4 is for). It actually means it is an "average" show and therefore is about as good as most other shows.

There. Perhaps someone will read this and reconsider their own ratings. You give ratings for your own benefit of course. If you think your ratings are for someone else, you are probably disillusioned: you are one of thousands that participate in this community. The only exception is your own friends that trust your opinion (if you even have that).

Think about it:

If you haven't seen alot of anime, you're at a disadvantage to determining whether a show is even above average - nevermind an actual masterpiece.

If you have seen alot of anime, then by default most of the shows you have seen are average. With the better shows taking incrementally higher ratings depending on their relative quality. The difference is that you have experienced enough to have an (at least somewhat) informed opinion.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled program.
