Anime Relations: One Piece
"Kaizoku ou ni, orewa naru!"

Born on May 5th.
174 cm in height.
Currently 19 years old.
Coming from East Blue.
Lean and rubbery.
Smile goes up to the cheeks.
The one always wearing a straw hat.
The captain of the infamous straw hat crew.
I'm talking about him.
The man that inspired me in life.
Monkey D. Luffy.

If I have to list down the persons that are most influential in my life, he would be a part of it. I've known Luffy for more than a decade now. Though I'm still on hiatus and not been following the series up to its current arc, I've always like him and have known him by heart. He's not just an average anime character for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not delusional or obsessive. I accept the reality of him being a fictional character, and I know there are still much more significant persons in my life other than Luffy. Still, the fact that I first learned things from him and that I didn't learn from anyone else but just his character, Luffy's character, makes him quite an important person to me. One Piece is fictional, yet it speaks so much of reality. I like it that it's like that. I'll thank Oda-san for that.

I have known his character quite well. Imagine this, its like someone who have grown up together with you. That's exactly how I've come to know him. I watch/read or rewatch/reread One piece countless of times and this is how I've come to understand how he have grown throughout the series and at the same time me myself, have grown with the series quite well. With this, I'll share the things I learned from him by his character.

1. He is a simpleton.
Foolish. Dumb. Idiotic. Weird. Yes, he is really like that to the point of annoyance. However, it's not like Luffy is a retard or a loser, but he just speaks straightforwardly without much hesitation. He consistently speaks what is on his mind. He doesn't make the story long and dramatic, he goes straight to the point and deal with it straightforwardly. Because of this type of personality, he is trusted with his words, even when too often he speaks the most pointless or stupidest of things. He is not good with dramas. He doesn't add spices to stories. He doesn't lie in order to exaggerate. What makes me more amazed of his simple mind, is the fact that he can only say the things that he sensed around him. This means that, he doesn't use much judgment and speak blatantly about the truth of what he saw, heard, touched, smelled, and felt. Most of the characters in the One Piece universe always find Luffy's words F.D.I.W (refer to first words of this paragraph), but if you look at it closely, his words are labeled as so because of a single logical fact: it's the truth. One Piece portrayed a world in which rules are governed by lies, corruption, greediness, and such. In an event that Luffy speaks of something true, it doesn't fit in to the kind of world that take place. That's why its regarded as foolish, dumb, idiotic, and weird. You can see how much this idea reflects at the lenses of reality. The reality of the truth being considered as foolish and lies become unknowingly the truth.
Trivia: if you have been reading One Piece, You will notice Luffy having little or less (or even rare) thought bubbles. That is because Oda said Luffy doesn't need them much. He speaks whatever on his mind, and whatever's on his mind he speaks.
Speak up. It is important to speak on whatever's on your mind, no matter how foolish or wise it would be. It is because it is only through that that you will be understood and so as to understand. You are able to survive in this world because you are able to communicate. Prove to the world you exist by saying and doing something. Luffy is known and trusted because he speaks (more like shouts) a lot. His words often leave people either be amazed or dumbfounded. Nevertheless, people adore him for that. He talks about his dreams, his thoughts, his reasons. He talks about anything he wants to talk about no matter how big or small.

2. He is a child by heart.
May 5th, also celebrated as children's day in some countries, is the birthday of Luffy. This is neither incidental or by chance, Oda-san intentionally have Luffy's birthday at such date since this mirrors the kind of personality he have, and has been consistent throughout the series. the purity of his words and actions are like that of a child. He has a heart like that of a child. He is easily amazed by normal things (beetles, mobile transportation, and other interesting stuffs), he makes fun of his crew mates in serious situations (imitating impressions while trapped in a cage full of monsters), he does not recognize things that are downright obvious (such as when ussop disguises himself as sogeking), but he recognizes things that are totally different and have little resemblance (able to distinguish that the zombie and the old man with a big wound is of the same person), he names things by the qualities that are not their dominant characteristics (naming the banana-crocodile monster as banana monster where in fact it looks more like a crocrodile), he cannot absorb complicated explanations of how things work (such as not understanding how digging a hole next to the other one is completely separate and not connected),

(under construction)

2. He is a cheerful person.

I remember a scene in Skypeia Arc. Luffy was riding a boat with Sanji and Ussop, they thought they would be falling of a thousand of meters from the sky back to the sea, Sanji and Ussop have been scared out the hell of their lives, and there he is laughing and saying its fun! He laughs and smile most too often, even when he and his friends are in scenarios in the verge of death. He is actually a very optimistic person, and that he approached problems more often with a carefree personality. Its like he saying, "Oh, we are dying. hahaha!" when he and his friends would be trapped in a cage full of deadly beast.

...
Luffy's decisions are often outrageous, and no matter how shocking this would be to his crew, they will always follow him. Why? Because they know its what he want, and he'll do everything to ge it, and he is serious for it. His crew respects him for that. Luffy may not seem like it, but he do understands people much more than anyone from his crew.

I was just 5 years old when I watched this cartoon that aired in the television. Back then, I just enjoyed the pretty drawings and animations and don't care much of the characters or the story, well, I was five at that time, so I just naturally enjoyed the moving pictures and the cheerful smiles of the cartoon's faces on TV. I can't really remember the first animes that I have watched, but I'm pretty sure the earliest memory of an anime I remembered was a scene from Cedie, wherein Cedie was riding a horse going back to his home.
It was on fourth grade that I learned the appropriate term for this big-eyed-unique-hairstyle cartoon series is "Anime" and that it has its origins in Japan. I learned this while watching an ad on the television and it was a moment of discovery then. Back then, different series of anime was broadcast in the local television and that these became my first main source of pastime and pleasure. In a day, they'll show 6-10 different Anime shows. My life has never been boring since then. When watching TV has become mainstream, I stared collecting anime DVD's so that I could re-watch some of my favorite animes back then. I Never heard of internet before. By the time internet became popular, I searched for sites where I can watch anime for free.
If you'll ask me what really hooked me into anime, I can't really tell what. Nobody introduced me to anime. I'm sure that most people around me are still clueless about their existence by the time I got to be aware of it. I can just say that I grew with it, because it has been with me since the childhood that I don't even remember. Anime just naturally became a part of me as I was growing up. It has been the one the is naturally showing me how the world is, how to live in the world, and how to survive in it. It's the thing that helped me go through the real world. I learned about real world issues through anime, at an early age of 6. Through anime, even as a child, I understand why my parents have to sacrifice seeing me and go to work. I understand why I have the responsibility to take care of my siblings. I understand what's it like to have a dream and go to school. I understand why I cam to understand life like that. Over the years, I saw how anime changed and grow. A part of me was really proud that this anime world has become real popular today and that many people have grown to love it and become inspired in it. Another part of me feels nostalgic as I remember the old anime days, and realized how different anime have become since then.
Anime has always been a part of me, that I can't see myself if I remove that part of me in my life. In my 16 long years of journeying with Anime, I'm always blessed that I came to discover it and it has been helping me with my life.
My love of anime have come to a point in which If there would be one thing I would bring to my grave, its not secrets (haha) but anime. I told my mom to bury with me my Anime DVD's, magazines, posters, bookmarks, stickers, photobook collections I had since 10 years old if I die earlier than her.

Some 20 Anime facts that randomly happened to me in childhood. Yes, childhood.

1. My legendary crush in Anime is Yami Yugi, from the first ever Yu-gi-oh series.

7. Monkey D. Luffy will forever be the greatest anime character I've known. He is one of the persons and the only great anime character that inspired me throughout my life, He's always been the top 1 on my Favorite character's list since 4th grade. 15. Rorouni Kenshin (Samurai X) in the first anime that inspired me about life.
16. Angelic Layer will always be the anime that has the most unique theme for me.
17. I find the Yoh and Anna couple from Shaman King incredibly unique even when I don't understand why I find it like that.
