Welcome to Concept Breakdown, a series where I break down different concepts of anime/manga and give my opinion on it.

For this article, I talk about the similarities of harem and how many different harem/anime use the same cliche. I am not addressing the concept as a whole because there are many anime/manga that stray from this main concept.

Note: I am not discussing Reverse Harems in this article

So what is a harem? Well in anime/manga, it means there is one main character (usually a male), and a few supporting characters (usually female) that are one way or another romantically attracted to the MC (Main Character).

Plots: After looking into various harem anime and manga, I noticed a reoccurring event. The MC almost always saves a girl even if it's from a small problem like saving them from a bully in a high school anime or saving them from a monster in a fantasy/action anime. Many harems tend to stick to a cliche plot of the MC helping a ton of people and they fall in love with him/her, but there are unique ones that tend to be the best. (I'd recommend Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo)

Characters: There are also a few similar personalities that show up in different harems. For one, I noticed that most MCs in the harem are either perverted or really dense. I think this is because these are the two easiest personalities to build off of since they will most likely not commit to any one relationship. There are also many similarities in the kinds of personalities of the supporting characters, for example, the different -dere ,tsundere, someone who acts mean, but is occasionally kind; kuudere, someone who acts indifferent and unemotional, but come out of their shell later on; and dandere, someone who acts anti-social, and only talks when the right person (the MC) comes along.

Note : For more on the kinds of -dere, check out my article, the different types of -dere.

Thanks for reading this article and I'd love to see your thoughts about it and your own opinion on harems.

TL:DR - Many harems have plots that don't stray too far from each other and typically have a boy-saves-girl concept. The characters for the harems are also very similar and occasionally have any one of kind of -dere.
