Welcome to OVA Night!
My friends and I like to watch dumb shows and youtube stuff together sometimes, usually random obscure OVA's from over the internet or on DVD's and it's a great time. This blog series covers all the shows we watched one night and whether they're worth your time.

This Night's Summary THESE Night's Summaries
Yeah, this post combines two nights in one because time got cut short on the first. These were done from the span of early this year, to very recently.
I will say though, three of these shows included this time are comedy gold and I can't recommend them enough to anyone who loves ridiculous shit.

OVA 1: Devilman: Tanjou-hen & Devilman: Yochou Sirene-hen
TBH, I had no idea what devilman was until I saw devilman crybaby pop up everywhere and then witnessed this video that showcases the best of the dub. A lot of people sing praises for the subbed version, but for the sake of comedic consistency with the OVA nights, we opted for the dub and boy do I not regret that, we had a great time. Well, at least for the first half. The hilariously bad line delivery coupled with the cheesy fight scenes really sell the first episode for me, my favourite one-liners include "Is it ok to wear my shoes in here? I DON'T GIVE A SHIT", "FUCKING EY' RUN FOR IT", and of course "FUCKIN' HELLFIRE!". Not to mention the scene where ryo and akira just awkwardly stare at each other, brilliance. The second episode was a drag though, basically just a couple of long fights with repetitive dialogue. If you haven't seen it already you probably should. It's worth it at least once.

OVA 2: Mad Bull 34

OVA 3: A Kite

OVA 4: Mezzo Forte

OVA 5: Choujin Densetsu Urotsukidouji

This Night's Summary

This night wasn't really mindblowing, just surprising. Mostly just the standard fare, but one show in particular I'm seriously conflicted on.

OVA 1: Green Green OVA
Pilot of the Green Green TV Anime. I haven't watched that yet but you don't really need the context, it plays out like any typical highschool OVA comedy would. Nonsensical, with the idiot pervert guys getting beat up and main guy being dragged into things he doesn't want to be dragged into. Also the animation is super jank, scenes that aren't just walking and running cycles look awful. Give it a watch if you need a filler show to bide the time, otherwise skip it.

OVA 2: Kono Danshi, Sekika ni Nayandemasu.
I sorta liked the story to this, but the dialogue is cheesy as all hell. The artstyle is sorta nice too, sort of jank in animation, but the stills are good, like the CG for a visual novel. I'd recommend it, it's short so it won't take long and you'll get a good laugh from the corniness.

OVA 3: Quiz Magic Academy: The Original Animation OVA Part 1 & Part 2
Relatively standard magical high-school anime comedy OVA. It has a HUGE cast for a short series and I'll praise it for at least giving most of the introduced characters some personality, even if they're one-dimensional. The second episode is better then the first I think, probably because I began to like the character interactions and quips more after getting used to the setup. Shame it's only two episodes though, I reckon this could be a decent comedy series if it had more time to flesh out it's world and provide some more scenarios.

OVA 4: Tokyo Daigaku Monogatari
This was the most interesting show of the night and it left me with a lot of mixed thoughts. It's hard to summarise as well, because it's trying to do a lot of things at once, the first episode in particular is trying to be a comedy/romance/slice of life hybrid but instead of combining them in a blend, it feels like it's written by multiple people and they couldn't decide whether to take it seriously or not. You get some scenes, like the classroom bit where the main guy Naoki is trying not to get caught by the teacher under his desk because he snuck into a different classroom to spy on this girl he likes named Haruka, which are great and really funny. Then there's these other scenes, like after they've hooked up and they're just talking about day to day life, stuff like the weather and entrance exams. These bits are written like a serious high-school romance and it feels like a completely different show.

Then the next episode is all over the place, where it becomes this very dark, broody "after school" story where Naoki becomes successful, but also becomes a massive dick, promising Haruka to always stay together and then proceeds to cheat on her because they lost touch after they split ways on their university and career paths. When karma hits and he can't sustain himself though, Naoki becomes a washed up loser while everyone around him moves onward. After getting called out, he stops being a douchebag and gets motivated to start his life over and gets back with Haruka who's somehow been faithful to him the whole time.

I think that's how I think it went, I could be wrong though, because the second episode really just blazes though everything so fast and you have to put the pieces together. There's also an entire manga series for this and I need to read that to get a better idea of the story. I can recommend this however, if you're wanting to watch something a bit left field.

OVA 1: Ninja Mono
This was... underwhelming. Probably the weakest of the bunch when it came to memorable gags and memes, but it has a few good moments, most notably is this girl's ridiculous haircut. How the hell do you even style that!?

OVA 2: Yakusai Kochou
Completely stupid, but it was funny. You got a pervy monk, a pervy schoolboy, Ms. Shameless and the "straight" woman all with over the top hammy lines and people throwing themselves all over the place. If you're looking for something mindless to watch, go for it.

OVA 3: Honoo no Labyrinth
Probably the best show of the night. Full of eccentric stereotypes, extremely hammy voice acting, great screencap memes and top tier dancer girl waifu.
Also, there's a lot of fanservice.

OVA 4: Idol Fight Suchie-Pai 2
This was really, really weird. It's based on the Jaleco Mahjong game and it's a catfight battle royal with tropetastic characters of all kinds, like a catgirl, android and a dominatrix, all fighting over the possession of the magical Mahjong MacGuffins.
