Excerpt from Oh! My Goddess fandom, Images from Zerochan.net

Angels are heavenly symbiotic beings. They are paired with a goddess, and aid in the casting of powerful and complex spells, as well as being a companion to a goddess. Each of the five major goddesses who has appeared thus far has an angel.

Belldandy and Peorth revealed theirs first in the manga, in the Fourth Goddess arc. Belldandy has Holy Bell (called Blessed Bell in the earlier Dark Horse releases), and Peorth has Gorgeous Rose (La Rose Magnifique in the Dark Horse release). Later on, Skuld obtains Noble Scarlet (accidently), and Urd conjures up her old angel, World of Elegance. The fifth goddess, Lind, has twin angels: Spear Mint and Cool Mint (called Coolmint and Spearmint in the Japanese version.)

There is no real demon equivalent of an angel, although Mara conjures up demon servants that don't fit the definition of an angel. However, later on, Welsper obtains a purified Tsukaima, which he names Die Wespe der Blauen Lanze (German for The Wasp of the Blue Lance). Judging from Hild's words in the Lind arc, demons are actually more powerful than goddesses (and also have fewer restrictions) and in order to balance things out goddesses are given angels.

If an angel isn't named within a certain amount of time of being obtained, it is automatically assigned a number. Also, two goddesses of second class or higher must be witness to the naming.

Angels also take on their host's elemental magic.

Belldandy - Holy Bell - Wind
Urd - World of Elegance - Fire
Skuld - Noble Scarlet - Water
Peorth - Gorgeous Rose - Wood (or some say Earth)
Lind - Cool Mint and Spear Mint - Ice
Welsper - Die Wespe der Blauen Lanze (The Wasp of the Blue Lance) - Wind

Die Wespe der Blauen Lanze was originally born from Belldandy, so it makes sense that its element is wind as well. However, one must also consider that Welsper's element is wind (as shown in his debut arc).

Angels aren't necessarily tied to their hosts permanently; Die Wespe der Blauen Lanze has switched from Belldandy to Keiichi to Welsper. However, if forcibly removed, it's enough to make a goddess unconscious. The link between an angel and their goddess is a very tight one, as Peorth puts it: "Two bodies, one heart."

Angels feed off of the power of goddesses. More specifically, a goddess's power is made by her love for others. The reason why Keiichi was able to host Cool Mint and use its abilities because he's loved by many goddesses. However, since Die Wespe der Blauen Lanze kept on using its powers on its own (in an attempt to be helpful), it kept on draining energy from the goddess who loves Keiichi most of all: Belldandy.

The distribution of angel eggs seems pretty lax, though. Urd was able to order one off of a heavenly equivalent of mail-order. They have a tendency to go berserk when the goddess doesn't have enough power to control it yet, and usually are sealed until they're able to be controlled. A goddess needs power so they can completely control their angel.

An angel is more than just some sort of symbiotic being that looks good, though. An angel is a goddess's closest companion, and is the mirror reflecting a goddess's true nature and innermost soul. That is why Urd's World of Elegance is black and white; it reflects Urd's ancestry of being half goddess and half demon. Lind probably had the hardest time with her angel also; since nobody knew she had a second angel with the other wing, the single wing meant to most people that she had an abnormality in her soul.

In Belldandy's own words in meeting her own angel, "it was like meeting a new, very special friend! The most understanding existence in the universe... a mirror reflecting my inner soul". It's clear that there's an emotional connection between an angel and her goddess, and angels must be absolutely obedient to a goddess's command. However, it is the goddess's cry of the heart that is far more important than the spoken word.

Often seen as a bland 'dere' Archtype, I find the Deredere is a great way to offer a positive lens or uplifting philosophical view in situations where gloomier character types would despair or be enraged. Protagonists such as the Goddess Belldandy (Ah! My Goddess), Hanato Kobato (Kobato), Akari Mizunashi (ARIA), and the Persocom Chii (Chobits) represent well the uplifting character type the Deredere represents, who typically view the world with a degree of innocence & wonderment at the simple beauty or joys of their respective worlds. These characters often turn despair into hope or try to see the bright side in a crisis. Seeing such innocent characters in distress often motivates other archetypes to decisive action and can serve as powerful motivators in the plot, placing the happy centre of a cast in peril. In all works, situations where the often calmly composed Deredere is torn from their social circle due to peril in the plot, serve to illustrate just how integral to some casts these positive 'anchor characters' can be, with the usual calm/social order collapsing rapidly with their absence or having them in crisis. The way they 'accentuate the positive' constantly often get them slapped with the label of overly saccharine or sickly sweet, but such uplifting characters can often provide great contrast to antagonists with more vile or malevolent motives, or offer positive perspectives when others fall into despair or melancholy, because the Deredere is often like a sun that never sets, constantly casting brightness into all the situations their lives throw at them, with the Deredere usually typifying the adage "Seeing the brightside!"

December 2004 - Yggdrasil System logs Nekomi Tech student Keiichi Morisato's inadvertent wish request and dispatches Goddess 1st Class Belldandy to grant his wish, he wishes for her to remain with him forever. The wish is successfully logged and now she is bound to him. After a turn of good luck they are offered residence at the Tariki-Hongan Temple thanks to the generosity of the local monk who leaves on a spiritual quest inspired by the young goddess' virtuous spirit.

February 2005 - Megumi Morisato arrives in Nekomi Town scouting the neighbourhood for her impending move to the area for school in the following spring. She visits Keiichi and Belldandy at their newfound residence in the Tariki-Hongan Temple and informs her brother that she will be going to Nekomi Tech much to his chagrin. Later Bell and Keiichi help befriend an Earth Spirit to secretly watch over Megumi after a misunderstanding when they first met him.

March 2005 - Lamenting her failure to acknowledge the Valentine's Day Traditional chocolate exchange Belldandy makes it up to Keiichi on the following White Day holiday. The results of which bring the couple even closer together.

April 2005 - Belldandy's older sister Urd arrives on Earth to move along her sister's relationship a bit 'faster' the resulting hijinxs serve to make life hilarious chaos for Belldandy, Keiichi, and Megumi. But the sisters attract the ire of NIT's Campus Queen Sayoko Mishima and her lecherous cousin Aoshima Toshiyuki who try to discredit the goddesses at every opportunity.

May 2005 - Keiichi & co. and his Auto Club teammates defeat Aoshima's attempt to displace the Auto Club as the sole racing club with his Four Wheels Club in a racing challenge with the help of the Goddesses and their helpful magic, that serves to defeat Aoshima's underhanded tactics. The Demon Maller is released and plots to make the goddesses suffer, recruiting Aoshima and Sayoko to her cause.

June 2005 - Skuld arrives at the Tariki-Hongan to try to convince Bell to return to the Heavens and ask her sisters for help due to a System crisis in the Heavenly System which is infested with bugs. Later deciding to stay, she begins a rivalry with Megumi over who is the better mechanic which leads to a 'robot battle' which teaches Skuld about humility & teamwork when she loses.

July 2005 - The Robot Banpei RX is invented by Skuld to help defend the temple from Maller's ongoing threat, while Maller recruits the diminutive Demon-God of Poverty 'Senbei' to help her cause. Both help elevate the cosmic push and pull of the ongoing Doublet battle between Goddesses & Demons in Nekomi Town.

August 2005 - A all-girl cart race for Auto Club alumni Sora Hasegawa sees Belldandy take a mentor role showing the girl how to conquer her fears to race unburdened. Later in the season a trip to the seashore sees a deep confession of affection from the ever-timid Keiichi to Belldandy. Which leads Urd to unleash her potent 'Seeds of Love' which causes all sorts of chaos between the young lovers.

September 2005 - Early fall sees the Sisters return to Heaven leaving Keiichi alone with Bell for the first time in so many months, however thanks to Skuld, his alone time is ruined by magical sabotage. But soon after their return all is set well when the sisters concoct an antidote. But Skuld again serves as a catalyst for disaster when she unleashes a machine that puts her and Keiichi in mortal danger.

October 2005 - Maller sets into motion events which awaken the legendary demon the Lord of Terror and eventually leads to Urd releasing the demon, which threatens to unravel reality itself. Thankfully Belldandy, Keiichi, and Skuld manage to save the day with some help from the Heavens. The Valkyrie Lind meets Keiichi when she is dispatched to assist in the fight.

November 2005 - In the fallout of the Lord of Terror Incident, the Goddesses' powers go into flux, resulting in some interesting situations with a child Urd, a grownup Skuld, and chibi-Belldandy avatar, eventually the situations are resolved and a semblance of normality is restored.

December 2005 - Given a new wish because of System issues, Keiichi wishes for the only thing he could ever wish for now, Belldandy at his side.

January 2006 - The 4th Goddess Peorth arrives as the mysteries of fate grant Keiichi another wish through her rival agency, after a series of misadventures at the temple with her and the gang, he finally makes a wish and she sees it granted, and she subsequently leaves (but don't think that's the last this zany goddess will see of the Tariki-Hongan Gang in the animation ;D)

February 2006 - Former Auto Club President Chihiro Fujimi returns to campus to see her old alumni, meets and is subsequently inspired by Keiichi to change her career trajectory. Urd reunites with an old flame The Plum Tree Spirit who is on the same quest she remembered from long ago and some slapstick zaniness ensues as he tries to win Urd's trust back. She also manages to free her Angel from a seal she placed long ago in order to save Skuld who unleashed danger with runaway tech yet again.

March 2006 - Skuld finds a crush with a local boy and begins to tap into the fullness of her feelings/magic with the help of her sisters. The Demon Queen Hild appears to challenge the Goddesses directly, and later employing Maller as her proxy Lieutenant using several plots she causes havoc for the gang, even using time travel near the end of the season to try to erase Belldandy from Keiichi's history. Eventually leading to the Demons unleashing the dreaded Angel Eater in a plot against Belldandy, her sisters, and the visiting Peorth. Lind rushing to Earth discovers she is a dupe and the catalyst for the Demon entering the temple in the first place. Recruiting Skuld and Keiichi to use the only Angels they have left in a gambit which saves the day and sees Lind find the love to support her twin angels and defeat the Demon Queen's evil plans.

May-July 2006 - The events of the 3 OAD animations occur over the course of this summer.

April 2007 - Belldandy's Mentor the Rogue God Celestin is freed from his Lunar Prison and threatens to unravel the very order of reality itself with the help of Fairy Princess Morgan Le Fay. Thanks to the efforts of Belldandy, Keiichi, Urd, Skuld, Peorth and the rest of the Goddess Network existence as we know it is saved. During the course of events Belldandy and Keiichi's love is put to the ultimate cosmic test when they successfully pass through the 'Judgement Gate' to prove the depth, truth, and bare honesty of their love. (This event fixed by the line "This will be the third spring since you have arrived")

*This timeline fixes events in place around the years the TV series was set in if we go by production year, following the progression of months and holidays, we arrive at a steady progression which sees the TV series proper showing roughly the first two years of Bell's time on Earth. Which fixes in place the followup Fighting Wings OVA and later the OADs which seemed to follow the course of a summer after the series proper in the interval before the 'Third Spring' the film is supposedly set during, as evidenced by dialogue and the Cherry Blossoms in bloom in the sequence outside the Auto Club Clubhouse.
