Why "Mushishi" is so popular and high rated?

Btw, I want to say that it's such a mystery why "Mushishi" is so popular and so high rated by majority. It's very strange... Feel free to write your thoughts to me about this question. I find this interesting. Because, well, you know, this is not a type of story for majority.
For example, I can somehow understand why "Cowboy Bebop" has popularity and hight appraisal, it simultaneously combined intelligent things and entertainment for different audience; so to say, for intelligent, deep and erudite and for common who seek just entertainment... but "Mushishi"... it's quite a mystery. I don't see what there can entertain a common audience who seek entertainment. But there are so many such people. Hm...
