Code Geass Final Episode

So late last night I managed to watch the final episode of Code Geass, and I have to say...

What the Hell is going on?

The first half of the episode is focused on the fights between Suzaku/Kallen and Orange/Anya respectively as well as Lelouch trying to get the key to Damocles from Nunally. While Lelouch succeeds in getting the key, Kallen blows up Suzaku (who is perfectly fine?), and Orange kun defeats Anya. Then Lelouch uses Geass on supposedly the world... but not a single significant character is affected, and finally, the time skips to the aftermath of the war where the members of the Order of Black Knights are being executed. Then all of a sudden, Suzaku (aka: invincible cyborg) appears out of nowhere and stabs Lelouch... and now there is peace in the world??

Don't get me wrong, Code Geass is one of my favorite series of all time, but you can't blame me for being a little skeptical of this ending. Since when does Lelouch, who was once ready to sacrifice the world for his sister, suddenly care so much about the world that he would become a martyr and living scapegoat to save it? Personally, I always got the impression that Lelouch couldn't give a damn about the world. And even if he dies, are Brittanians and Japanese suddenly going to walk down the street holding hands? What makes most sense to me is that another ambitious guy would take power and the whole cycle would repeat itself.

That being said, if you don't think too much, the ending was actually quite good (and a tear jerker at that). The way it ended, however, either leaves the possibility of a 3rd season or leaves it up to the audience to imagine the rest (most likely the latter). At the very final scene, we see C.C. on a haysack inside a wagon being driven by a masked man, and I can't help but think from the way the camera focuses on the masked driver's hidden face for a a while, that he is in fact, Lelouch. Also, as C.C. says her closing words, "right, Lelouch?," she looks up as if asking someone directly, not as if speaking to a dead guy. Other things hint at Lelouch being alive, like the title of the anime for instance: Code Geass R2 which would be R.R., Initials for Lelouch Lamperouge (L is pronounced like R in Japanese). This would mean that Lelouch, like C.C. and V.V., is/was/became an immortal and thus couldn't possibly have died.

Whichever the case, I thank Sunrise for the entertainment it has provided me with for the past two years, and let's hope for a 3rd seaon because it just doesn't feel right for Code Geass to end this way.
