Ethnic Representation in Eureka Seven (brief review)
Anime Relations: Koukyoushihen Eureka Seven
Eureka Seven, it is Christmas break, and I just had to take in this show again. One thing I can say is that this mecha anime is seriously underrated. I haven’t watched many mecha in my life (as yet), however all that I have sat through are animated works to be commended. Eureka Seven is not void of serious discussions such as the morality of war, terrorism, religious extremism and relationships and attractions with the opposite sex. Its contents makes it a global anime as its concerns are in fact real global concerns and experiences.
I honestly appreciate the representation of black persons in Eureka Seven. Often I encounter the large, scary, giant or “amazoness” representation that I could not identify with being a black person myself. Maybe it’s understandable. How many mangakas and Japanese illustrators are likely to have personally met someone who identified with being black? Perhaps they try to create a diverse world in their art though having limited experience with it. However Eureka Seven’s creators and Bones made real darker skinned characters I can identify with. Characters that reminded me of people I know personally. There were other characters meant to remind us of other non-Japanese ethnicities. Characters that made the “Gekkostate” team quite diverse and international.
