Anime Relations: Kyuuketsuhime Miyu (TV)
This is a special one.
Years ago, I watched the 1988 4-episode OVA, instantly recognizing it as a small gem of gothic horror (albeit not exactly horrific). This kind of atmosphere is quite rare. There is something very appealing about 1980s Japanese gothic stuff that doesn't seem to have any real western equivalent.
Anyhow, it took me ages to get hold of the TV series, and even after having done so, I postponed watching it for a number of reasons that are not relevant.
The series is sometimes boring with its often episodic structure (although most of these little stories are good - great atmosphere if nothing else). I would lie if I said it doesn't have its downsides, and indeed, I can't really give the series more than an 8.
I recall reflecting upon not really being very emotionally affected by the things happening, but with the conclusion and the perfect timing of a particular track in the soundtrack (which is generally superb) I suddenly found myself crying. This is the most unexpected shift of emotion I've experienced when watching an anime; doubly so because it's hard to explain the exact reason for it.
Then again, so much with this anime's qualities really comes from mood and atmosphere rather than great story.
Weeks have passed and I have gotten addicted to the soundtrack; addicted to its dark and sad qualities.
