Anime Character Dive 一 (ichi):
Anne from Vinland Saga
Voice Actor: Hara, Yumi (Japanese)
Series: Vinland Saga, Episode 14

!!SPOILERS!!

In Episode 14 of Vinland Saga, we meet Anne, the sole survivor of a Mercian village brutally massacred by Askeladd's band of Vikings. As the Vikings, including the enigmatic Askeladd, attempt to reach the Danelaw while escorting Canute, they are forced to seek shelter due to the harsh winter.
Anne's role in this episode goes beyond being a mere survivor. She becomes a symbol of the consequences of the Vikings' actions, highlighting the brutality and inhumanity of their raids. Her presence challenges the viewer to confront the harsh realities of war and the suffering inflicted upon innocent people caught in its wake. This anime excels in its portrayal of human emotions, not just constant fighting, which adds depth to its storytelling.
Before the raid happened, let’s delve into Anne's character. Born into a religious family, Anne finds herself torn between her upbringing and her desire for something different. She feels different from her happy family and wants to be selfish by wearing her stolen ring, mirroring the struggles of individuals in real-life situations where societal expectations conflict with personal aspirations. This inner conflict echoes the experiences of individuals like Jon Ward, who, despite being raised in strict religious environments, ventured out to pursue their own paths (Martin, 2023). In Anne's case, however, she doesn't get the chance to make her own choice as the Vikings tragically destroy her entire village and the only thing she can do is the accept her fate or not.
Anne's story reminds us of the complexity of human nature. It resonates with viewers because it portrays real-life struggles within a historical setting. Seeing things from Anne's perspective helps us understand the terrible effects of violence and why showing kindness matters in tough times. Her brief journey of self-discovery prompts us to reflect on our own beliefs and efforts to improve the world. The anime sends a powerful message: don’t follow the crowd, be true to yourself even if it means being selfish at times.
