"We can only understand ourselves through being with others."
— Riki Naoe (Little Busters)

"If you find fun in being with others, it's probably because they make you happy, and you make them happy in turn."
— Komari Kamikita (Little Busters)

"If you only accept things that meet your ideals precisely, you’ll make yourself and everyone around you unhappy."
— Chihiro Sengoku (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo)

"Hard work won't betray you. Though at times, it WILL betray your dreams. Working hard doesn't necessarily mean you'll fulfill your dreams. It's actually more common for it not to bear fruit. But just the fact that you did your best can serve as a sort of consolation."
— Hachiman Hikigaya (Oregairu)

"If I’m admiring, I can’t surpass."
— Ryouta Kise (Kuroko no Basket)

"The more inexperienced you are, the more you want to show off."
— Houtarou Oreki (Hyouka)

"I think people mope when their expectations are too high. It's tiring when you always have to overachieve. Don't overdo it. Just work on achieving what you can."
— Haru Yoshida (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun)

"The point of life isn't to be perfect. It's to do want you want to do, to be who you want to be."
— Iori Nagase (Kokoro Connect)

"Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistake of others."
— Shiori Shiomiya [quoting Otto Von Bismarck] (Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai)

"Just because you're having fun, doesn't mean you aren't serious."
— Konatsu Miyamoto (Tari Tari)

"They say those who die, go to heaven. I don’t think so. I think when we die, we go to live on in someone else's heart. We live on in their memories. Just like how our parents stay in our hearts. But with time, memories fade. That's why people wish to leave something behind. They don't want to be forgotten. Nobody wants to be forgotten."
— Kaito Kirishima (Ano Natsu de Matteru)

"It's not about who's right and who's wrong, there are things more important than that. That's why we need things like apologies and forgiveness."
— Taiga Aisaka (Toradora)

"You can't run away" is just how the strong think. It's impossible for it to always be the individual's fault. Plenty of times, it's society, the world, your surroundings, or someone else that's mistaken. By saying that "you can change yourself", you're conforming to that trashy, indifferent and cold world. You're admitting that you lost to it and becoming it's slave. You're only dressing it up in pretty words and deceiving everyone including yourself."
— Hachiman Hikigaya (Oregairu)

"Life is a game where if one person becomes happy, another becomes unhappy.
Everyone thinks that they're the most unhappy. And everyone who thinks they're unhappy thinks everyone else is happy.
"
— Kanata Futaki (Little Busters)

"Everyone's carrying something that matters. You just don't realize when you're carrying it. It's only after it slips out of your hand that you realize how heavy it was in the first place. So many times I thought that I'd never carry a load like that ever again. And yet, before I realized it, I was carrying it again. I'd feel so much better if I just got rid of it. But I just can't bring myself to do it."
— Gintoki Sakata (Gintama)

"There are as many forms of justice as there are people in the world. One's Justice is... always evil in another's eyes. My justice is the same. Because from the start, the opposite of Justice isn't evil. It’s justice. Evil is merely the label for the loser's justice."
— Rishia Ivyred (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari - Light Novel)

"Even though I did all this for him, in the end, it didn’t have anything to do with him. He didn’t request that I do this, nor did he wish that I would do this; I did this all of my own volition, Simply speaking, doing something for someone doesn’t actually have much to do with that person. Do you understand what I’m saying? That’s why acting for someone else’s sake is incredibly risky. Acting for your friends could result in betrayal, but acting for the sake of strangers is an even greater risk. Some people who don’t know about or don’t truly understand this risk and the pressure involved... simply act out of passion. However, a few do understand all this perfectly; they are familiar with the cruelty of reality and still choose to make this step. The first type of person is courageous, but the second type of person is a hero."
— Kaede (NEET Receives a Dating Sim System - Web Novel)

"There are various types of leaders. Such as the powerful types that leads everyone along forcefully, or those that are charismatic that charms everyone… but Master, I don’t think we would want to follow those types of leaders. 『Never composed, cornered by personal feelings, laying out plans that are full of holes. I don’t have the power to solve everyone’s problems…』was it? But you know… Always remaining composed, never worrying about anything, being able to solve any problem, a leader with the power to save everything reflected in his eyes; that is just an ideal. If such a person really existed, I think that person would be a very wonderful leader; but that is just a hero from a fairytale that everyone dreams of. Even if there was such a person, we do not think we would want to follow him. Not some ideal leader, I can’t like something that is just an illusion. I like the Master that tries to do something for us, even with the lack of power, trying desperately. Whether he has sufficient power or not, it doesn’t matter at all."
— Lily (Monster no Goshujin-sama - Web Novel)

"The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for."
— Bob Marley

"It really makes me realize how conflict can only occur amongst people of the same level."
— Luxon (Otome Game Sekai wa Mob ni Kibishii Sekai desu - Light Novel)

"Hypocrisy acted on is better than kindness without act."
— Fay (A Story of a Cannon Fodder who Firmly Believed He was the Protagonist, Misunderstood the Actual Protagonist as the Cannon Fodder, and Ended up Victorious - Web Novel)

Visual Novels

"When you're a brat, running fast is enough to make you popular. When you're a middle-schooler, the guys who can fight will be popular, and after that it's the guys with brains who get the girls."
— Yuuji Kazami (Grisaia no Kajitsu)

"People can't change, they merely learned how to live smart. People can become stronger or smarter. It's form may alter depending on the environment or situation. But you can never change your true nature."
— Yuuichi Yusa (Wanko to Kurasou)

"Nobody had appreciated me before because I wanted them to like the real me. Problem was, the real me wasn't any good. So I might as well just pretend. All I had to do was act out the most convenient role. Force out the most convenient emotions. Become someone who put a smile on people's faces. Even if that meant the real me to disappear entirely, I didn't care."
— Michiru Matsushima (Grisaia no Kajitsu)

"It is hard to continue believing you're right when everyone around you disagrees. It is far easier to change your mind, and decide that you're the only one in the wrong. Sometimes... it's easier to accept then it is to fight it. It hurts a lot less to accept people's misunderstandings than it does to try and fight it."
— Kotarou Tennouji (Rewrite)

"When you change yourself, the world changes with you. For example, say there's someone you hate. You never greet them when you meet. In fact, you get into fights when you do meet. But then one day, you try smiling at this person you hate. Then you don't get into a fight even though you always did. One single action you take causes something different than usual to happen. That's one of the little things meant by the world changing. Everyone lives through their relationships with other people. So if one of those people changes, then the other is forced to change too. So if you change yourself, then the world changes too. I think the simplest way to change the world is to change yourself."
— Shouichi Suganuma (Deardrops)

"I care about myself more than anyone. I help other people. If someone fails on the roadside, I help them get up. But that's because it makes me feel good. I did something good. I'm a good person. It feels good to help people. I don't actually care about the other party at all. I'm not honestly worried about them. I'm just satisfying myself. I'm just being pragmatic.
I think a lot of people are like that. In fact, I can't imagine anyone would help people if they didn't feel any pleasure from it. But that's not the problem. All living things satisfy their own desires. Self-fulfillment is the ultimate objective of life. Why is feigned beauty the only way to accomplish that? ...because we want to be accepted by the herd. I want everyone to praise me. To like me. I want to be popular. To be respected... I want a place where I belong.
"
— Kotarou (Rewrite)

"In the world, there are things that are "doable" and things that are "not doable".
Following that logic, there are also things that one "should do" and things that one "shouldn't do".
It is easy to separate the things which are "doable" and which are "not doable", however things which one "should do" and things one "shouldn't do" is a different story. The answer changes based on how one thinks. Which means that by their actions, a person is revealed.
"
— Licia de novus Yurii (Aiyoku no Eustia)

"If you hesitate when asking a question, you're probably better off not asking.
When you feel the time is right to ask, they'll tell you of their own accord.
"
— Mare S. Ephemeral (Hoshizora no Memoria)

"Being kind without reference to time, place and occasion is annoying. Hiding behind words of kindness is just being afraid of hurting someone."
— Tamaki Kousaka (To Heart 2)

"I find that those who care nothing for the suffering of others are the ones who scream loudest at their own pain. Don't you agree?"
— ????? (Kikokugai -The Cyber Slayer)

"If you really, really feel strongly about someone, and want to make them happy...
You need to doubt them just as much as you trust them.
"
— Kaine Hirata (A Profile)

"A person's worth is measured by the promises they keep, because the importance of a promise is measurable only by the person it is made to."
— ??? (Hoshizora no Memoria)

"Good and evil don't matter. To me, what's right is simply what's most precious to me."
— Kotarou Tennouji (Rewrite)

"I don’t know which path is the correct one. Which is why, until the path is proven to be wrong, I know no other way but to believe my current one is correct and diligently move forward.
— Soutetsu Migita (Maitetsu)

"Becoming stronger helps you gain more choices, you won't be able to do anything if you have too few choices. But don't be too obsessed about becoming strong. If you become too strong then you might gain too many choices. Many have ended up regretting choosing the wrong choice along the way and strayed from their original path. Aim for strength in moderation. Even the weak can overpower the strong exactly because they have fewer choices. It all comes down to the strength of the resolve of the individual's choice."
— Kuki Youkou (Ayakashibito)

Corner for Speeches & Arguments:

"Incestuous Relationships"
I've never understood the moral objection to incest. The only reasons I've ever heard for incest being morally wrong are "Birth defects increase!", "God says it's wrong.", "It's disgusting.", and "It often leads to abuse."

The birth defects one is nonsense. Even if you blindly accept the idea the single generation incest increases birth defects, we don't forbid relationships based on how likely they are to bear healthy children. It also basically concedes that incest is fine if they use birth control.

I can't argue with the God one, but I don't share those beliefs, so it's irrelevant. I understand the "disgust" factor, but that's hardly a reason to condemn others. People shouting that have basically just been conditioned by society and don't realize that their beliefs aren't actually based on anything.

The only argument that ever rang true to me was the abuse one. Family members have a lot of influence over each other, especially ones in parent/guardian relationships. Incestuous relationships can be or become abusive. Also, family is forever. If an incestuous pair breaks up, they can't get away from each other. Incest can become a messy, unpleasant, family-destroying disaster. However, does that really make it morally wrong if they really do love each other? Something being dangerous doesn't necessarily mean that it's morally wrong. At the very least, when the participants are consenting adults and around the same age, I think it's a lot more morally grey than people give it credit for. Incest in VNs doesn't bother me at all.

"Eroge & Visual Novels vs. Dating Sims"
Eroge are erotic games in Japan, and can be visual novels, dating sims, and plain ol’ sex games in general. This leads to people thinking that visual novels in general being just porn. But that's just like if a person came across a hentai manga, they'll assume that manga in general is just erotic content.
It should be noted that there is a difference between an 18+ visual novel, which may have a small percentage of pornography and focuses more on story, and a nukige, a visual novel that specifically focuses on erotic content and other sexual fetishes. A Dating Simulation is what it sounds like. It's like a nukige, but there are interactive choices for you to focus on during your play on ero-related content without much focus for the story. It's a "choose your own adventure" type of game. Dating Sims share share a common visual presentation, but are completely different from each other. Visual novels are by having stories with visuals that accompany them, they’re more like "choose-your-own-adventure books".

"We think writing was never the burden and the sorrow you made it out to be but as a matter of fact was your convenient crutch and your convenient alibi for every possible failure to be decent." -Lizzie (Mao II)
