The belief of the evil eye that can be traced found in the Eastern Mediterranean through literature and archeological evidence. Even those studying the history of the “evil eye” do not know whether this belief if from based on theology or folklore. Today, the belief in evil eye in some form continues to be strong among the cultures in Central America, Central Asia, Mediterranean Region of Europe, South Asia, Middle East, and East and West Africa. Immigrants from these areas that live in the U.S. remain believers as well.
The most well known evil eye bead is the ball or disk that consists of blue and white circles. From outside end the bead consists of circles of dark blue, light blue, white, and dark blue. This bead is found in Mediterranean, Turkey, and Greece. The evil eye bead can be made from glass, acrylic, or plastic. These beads often appear in other colors for the purpose of fashion and these alternative color beads are considered to provide the same amount of protection.
The evil eye beads are incorporated with precious metals or other gemstones and made into jewelry for either men or women. These beads are also made into wall hanging to provide protection from evil to a home or building. One will find this talisman on boats, cars, animals, etc.
The people of Turkey refer to the jewelry made from evil eye beads as Nazar Boncugu. The beads that are produced in Turkey are high quality. The creation of these beads is considered a form of art passed down from generation to generation. Because of the high quality of the bead produced in Turkey, the demand is high and the international jewelry trade for these beads is flourishing especially online.
