It is interesting to see the concept of account sharing applied to an MMO anime, but it's not required viewing in the slightest.

So... most people seem to not like this for some reason? The pacing is pretty slow, but I enjoyed it besides that. Also no matter how much you dislike it, you can't argue with the score. I resonated with the depictions of the alienation one feels while playing an MMO, and how they become attached to people they only know in game at the expense of abandoning their real lives, and lesbians of course.

Incredibly dull cute girls doing cute things show. It's not outright bad, but it's wholly forgettable and fleeting, and uses the not really yuri card to bait otaku. I can remember like, 2 gags from it total.

AD Police
The spinoff adventures of one of the worst and most inefficient police outfits to ever grace an anime. Masochistic, misogynistic, misanthropic, all taken dead seriously. The show nails the proper tone and does not leave any room for comedy thankfully. Unfortunately in order to be utilized to their full potential and give the desired impact, each episode should've been twice as long. And I think an episode count similar to BGC would've given it a better chance to develop its reoccurring characters and further explore its interesting themes. Very intriguing, but flawed.

I had known about this show for a while before watching it, but never even considered trying it because it because the characters looked ugly and the "plot" sounded like an excuse. Well it is ugly, and its "plot" is an excuse, but they are so in the best ways possible. The character designs allow for more bizarre facial expressions and give it a cool retro look. The plot is great in a total B movie sense. Some of the best martial arts fighting scenes ever, though. No stock footage, no still frames, no off model, no CG, no bullshit. It also has a crazed sense of humor not usually found in anime. Watch it.

Unsettling and often amazing. Funny how this resonates with me more than most of the other anime I've seen that take place in high school. I've read some of the manga, but it didn't grab me nearly as much as this. It's just a big fuck you to the adolescent escapism that anime is often oozing with. Its visual style doesn't sugarcoat things, and I love it. I may grow a 3rd arm before it gets a second season.

Ao no Exorcist
It's well animated and Rin can occasionally be amusing, but man does the show take every opportunity available to make itself a more generic shonen. It's a shame because I feel like if I saw this right when I got into anime, I would've loved it, but it didn't engage me at all at this point in my fandom. Normally that would make it average, but special mention must be given to the clusterfuck ending. Anime-only endings like FMA and Soul Eater only work when you have enough buildup to naturally divert the story in a different direction. In Blue Exorcist it feels like they just reach the end of manga available and completely veer off a cliff without warning. They didn't prepare for it at all (they're still wasting time on shitty school life antics episodes) and it feels like a completely different, but still wholly cliched show. They really bungled it.

Aoi Bungaku Series
There is one standout arc and the rest are of varying quality. The best arc is first, but at least the show as a whole is artistically impressive. No Longer Human is fantastic. Unbeatable realism, emotion, acting, and art. A period piece that captures everything from the setting to the sexism. This is great example of how to adapt something well. Shift to 2nd story is incredibly jarring. Setting that aside, it's one of the weirdest anime I've seen. That sadly doesn't make it good. I liked parts of it, but it's a big mess that I can't see as anything but bad. 3rd arc only adapted 1/3rd of the actual book which I feel lessens the impact of that particular part, and the time waster of a 2nd episode felt unnecessary. The 4th arc would've been better without the framing device that isn't particularly noteworthy beyond it's brazen yet dignified-by-anime-standards homoeroticism. 5th and 6th stories were enjoyable; both were short, simple but poignant, and had some gorgeous art, neither come close to the 1st arc, but I have few complaints. Overall, I get that all the stories are thematically consistent (isolation and betrayal), but I wish they had been more tonally consistent in order to better deliver the message. Also I wish they used more than 3 character designers.

Boy, what a difference good pacing makes. Unfortunately it's at the other extreme of the spectrum compared to the TV series. The first 2/3rds that were bloated in the show benefit well from this. The final arc was a blast to watch in the show, and it's a shame to see some cool parts get left out of it, but it still works. The alternate ending finale is grand and well worth it. I do wish I could've had the joy of seeing this material expanded in TV anime format, but I'll take what I can get. No debate that this is an improvement, I just wish there was a middle ground.

Eh? First arc has promise, but is TERRIBLY animated which totally wastes its Yoshitaki Amano character designs, and it ends pretty dumb. Likewise, 2nd arc is somewhat unsettling, but soon becomes difficult to take seriously, and the meta at the end kills the mood. The Mononoke prequel is undoubtedly the best by several miles, no complaints there (except that there wasn't more of it-- yet). As a whole, they were called "Horror Tales" but I don't think I was scared once? Such is life with horror anime.

Battle Fighters Garou Densetsu
It's a pretty standard fighting game adaptation, which you would suspect makes it terrible. I don't know exactly what line it crosses and where is does so that separates it from sucky counterparts like Art Of Fighting, but there is a definite difference. Where I'd describe Art Of Fighting as stupid, Fatal Fury is endearingly stupid, and that's all that matters. The characters, the dub, the story, the story's implausibilities, the fights, and cheap animation shortcuts all have a certain charm to them that make the show a fun watch. I think my favorite weird thing about it is in the flashback at the beginning, the main characters are just wearing kid-sized versions of the clothes they're wearing 10 years later. Such is life in a fighting game.

Up until Terry's first fight with Krauser, it's not very good. It's dull, has a plucky kid sidekick, and contains some of the most spastic, annoying, and unnecessary camera movement I've ever seen. After the fight though, the plot becomes increasingly hilarious in a good way, even managing to work in alcoholism! Impractical outfits galore, a constantly wavering animation budget, and an absurdly evil villain, this is pretty fun to watch. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times during it, so maybe it's less serious that the first one, but this one manages to be more entertaining.

Blood: The Last Vampire
The closest anime equivalent to a horror film. Weak premise, characters not developed in the slightest, sense of shlockiness. Although it's the first all digitally animated anime, most of the character animation looks much better than modern character animation, which is really sad. Whereas this went with all digital as an experimental choice to push the medium, most anime just do it to save money. At times it is unbelievably fluid. It still struggles like modern anime with CG integration. The action scenes are well done, but never complex. There are some really neat camera shots though. Saya is sexy (those lips) in a disturbing way (that stare). The only other anime I can think to mix English and Japanese dialogue is Kite. Blood has a lot more English, but it is BAAAAAD at times. Really hard to pay attention to what is going on when the nurse is over-enunciating/mispronouncing every word. Also has a sly sense of humor. Is far too rushed, I wish it was longer. Apparently someone else did too since Blood+ is an approximate retelling, but I doubt it will have the same boldness.

A mature and worldly hard sci-fi story that actually tries. Unfortunately that seems like a lot to ask for in a sci-fi anime. Note: You absolutely do not have to see this show in order to understand Steins;Gate, don't make the same mistake I did. I will never live down the thought I had after the first few episodes that this show had the potential to surpass Serial Experiments Lain. Nope nope nope. Stories like this require careful, careful construction. Halfway through, the show clearly begins to collapse under its own ambition story and animation-wise, as it becomes more clear that this is an adaptation of something that usually does not get good adaptions... a visual novel! By the end, it's just your standard generic vaguely sci-fi anime that thinks it is way smarter than it actually is.

Production values are alright, but the array of environmental/hippy messages the show assaults you with range from preachy to bullshit to flat out wrong. It gets progressively worse as it goes on to the point of being unwatchable. And it's not like the budget craps out, it is all the "plot's" and character's fault. A really dire affair.

This is supposed to be a comedy, right? Lazily referencing other 80's anime, making fun of archetypes by using them normally, and having a pointless teenage girl protagonist do not make comedy. I didn't laugh once. I wasn't indifferent, I was frowning. This is as funny as a death knell, and there is absolutely nothing production wise to soften the blow.

Really funny. It's just about teenage boys being stupid, which is pretty realistic if I say so myself. And since it's a school comedy written by a guy that actually stars guys as opposed to the majority of school comedies out there, it feels a lot more down to Earth and plausible even with the shenanigans that occur. It made me laugh many times per episode, no type of segment was particularly weak. Several times a segment would assume the look of a story that it seems like every gag comedy needs to have, and then it'd veer off in a completely bizarre direction. Hidenori is amazing and his VA kills it, the rest of the acting is pretty good too. The best sketches are ones involving book girl.

Delpower X Bakuhatsu Miracle Genki!
This anime is sort of like a drug addict or an alcoholic. It starts out seemingly normal, but soon it becomes quite evident that cannot accomplish even the most basic of functions, begins to fail at whatever it tries to do, and collapses to the floor in a fit of desire when they don't get their fix for too long, only able focus on one thing, and in this case it's apparently wrestling. It's clear that their budget is non existent only a few minutes into the film, this has some Megazone 23 Part 3 moments in terms of fluidity (not a good thing). The music cues are often bizarrely non-fitting, and the lyrics in the insert songs are completely nonsensical. Not even half way through it just breaks down into a poorly animated wrestling match between mechas, with very grating humor. Despite all the bad, this surprisingly managed to wring a few chuckles out of me. Would absolutely not recommend

Densetsu Kyojin Ideon: Hatsudou-hen
I actually liked Ideon's original ending, so this film isn't entirely necessary, but I still liked it. It changes so little from the original ending though that it feels like Tomino just wanted to be more sadistic instead of actually improving the plot. That being said, there are brilliantly brutally insane moments in this film. Attack On Titan has nothing on this. It shoots straight up to Texhnolyze and Berserk caliber of ludicrous ultraviolence, and thankfully it's a bit more cohesive than Shigurui. Animation boost is great. I think one minor plot point change detracts from the show's overall tone (see my review if you really want to know), but it's a pretty great film overall. That ending is something else. It's one that's gonna stick with me for a while. The movie feels years ahead of its time, I would've guessed anywhere from 1988 to 1994 rather than 1982.

It makes too many assumptions on what the viewers already know about the show to just watch this instead of the TV series. There's no concept of time in the movie and many plot events are more contrived without extra explanations. All the nuggets of characterization and plot development that slowly collected themselves into a story in the TV anime made a difference too. Maybe the Mobile Suit Gundam compilation movies spoiled me, or maybe it is just because I watch the series first and I would have no problems with the film if I hadn't, but it's just going through the plot's motions rather than trying to adjust the material to a film format. With a theatrical run time, I didn't expect it to just feel like an hour and a half clip show.

It’s funny how the politics in this show are much more simplified and basic than anime hallmarks of political intrigue like Gundam and Code Geass, yet it’s infinitely more effective here. Partially because of how well it mixes the human and macro aspects of it. Deeply moving and engaging. A very fluid blend of genres too. One moment it’s a mecha show, then it’s a political thriller, then it’s a slice of life in a foreign land, all done fantastically. Also one of the most realistic sci-fi anime I’ve seen. Votoms is usually toted as the apex of realism in the real robot genre, but this totally trumps it due to how present day and plausible it feels. If it has a weak point, the CG mechs are a little rough, but it mostly avoids bad integration by not showing anything else on the screen when the mechs are around. And that ending: hhhhoooooollllyyyy shit. I’m pretty sure an anime like this will never be made again. A modern classic.

Garou Densetsu: The Motion Picture
The improved animation compared to its predecessors does the film wonders, both in enhanced fight scenes and actually pretty good character animation. I like how despite being an original work they manage to tie it in to the previous two installments so well, and you can kind of see a trajectory of character development from film to film. The first half of the movie is probably the best the franchise has to offer. Unfortunately I feel like it fizzles out by the start of the 3rd act. The fight scenes stay great, but the longer running time is unfortunately not all filled with them, and while I do really enjoy some of the more quiet moments, there are a few dull stretches that bring it down, the new girl gets tiresome, and the villain is not nearly as cool as Krauser or Geese (why did he only get like a 5 second cameo?!?). So while I think it's a more cohesive work than the previous two installments, it loses some of its crazy charm that made others so fun to watch. Also, best ending song ever or best ending song of all time?

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Really sweet show. Chiyo is adorable and Nozaki is hilarious. It's at its best when it is a segment that features both of them, usually with lots of reactions shots. I also loved the shojo manga absurdity moments with the boxes, bicycles, or tanuki. Segments with just one of the main characters, or only side characters (ugh) lose some of the charm. I think the show has a few too many side characters for its own good, most of them are fine to some degree, but I felt like they got in the way of the stuff I really wanted to see, and they could be grating after a while. And sadly Yuzuki is the best of them, but she's used the least. I would've jumped for joy if there was a mere ounce of progression regarding the main romance plot, but that's unfortunately asking for a lot in shoujo anime adaptations these days. I don't know if it'll get a 2nd season, but at least its heart is in the right place.

Ghost Hunt
At face value, everything about this show is pretty generic. The artistry, the premise, even the title. The mini arcs do a good job of fleshing out plots. Modern episodic shoujo has a tendency to deal with stories exclusively involving small children or high schoolers, and for the first half of the show it falls into that trap. The stories aren't bad, but are pretty standard and very predictable in the sense you'll be able to guess who is behind, but not why they're behind it. Thankfully things kinda pick up in the second half. The Bloody Labyrinth arc is fantastic and actually scary! The arc plays into a lot of my personal preferences with horror, but it's definitely the standout of the series. The only comedic and standalone story was also really good too. The last arc is alright, but kinda throws all the subtly out the window that made the show a supernatural mystery and instead tries to be straight up horror. In the end, not much is resolved. This was a series that was helped along by the characters. The entire cast is very likable, and together they have a great group dynamic. Some of them are kinda useless, but by the end I was watching it more for the characters than the story. May have to read the manga/LNs.

Giant Robo Gaiden Ginrei
At first it seems like it will just be side stories of sorts from the GR universe starring Ginrei, but soon it turns into a full blown parody of the series's plot and love of twists and theatrics. Except when it's not; after the episode 2, the strongest episode, puts you through the wringer with complete screwball comedy, episode 3 does a 180 and plays the "side stories from the GR universe" card straight. Not a bad thing, but with such a small episode count, they should've all been serious or comedic one way or another. A lower budget and more fanservicey than the main series, but the budget of GR is a supremely high bar to clear, and I can't blame them for sexualizing Gin Rei-- she's hot! I would not have minded a "tales from the GR universe" TV series-- there'd be plenty of material to go off of, and I think it could be fun once it caught its footing.

Giant Robo the Animation: Chikyuu ga Seishi Suru Hi
Legitimately one of the best anime I've ever seen. It just does everything so perfectly. Going into too much detail of what it does right would take up too much room. The only weaknesses are like two minor animation mistakes total in the entire series (this show looks lovely on Blu ray... rips), and that the show is just a masterful standalone part of what obviously is a much larger (and not animated story). Easily in my top 10, watch the hell out of it.

GS Mikami
One of the weirdest shonen anime I've ever seen. Whether it be the adult female protagonist, art/animation, humor, insane episodic variation, or the refusal to adhere to the shonen formula. The characters are instantly likable; they aren't overused. Mostly side characters are rotated out from arc to arc. They appear more frequently in the second half and it's great. Character designs are varied and 90's-tastic; Toei has lots of super deformed stuff in the 90's, but this show is just... deformed? Character models are constantly warping, but never into chibi territory, things get jagged, exasperated, and weird. Some shows that deal with the supernatural still end up looking artistically uninspired, but here it's used as an excuse to constantly draw weird shit, very imaginative/often surreal. Comedy=zany. Some shows with ghosts always use the same types of ghosts but this show... they fight everything from ghosts to gremlins to vampires to witchdoctors to killer robots to Santa Claus to a gay horse demon. Almost no episode is like another. Most shonen tend to have weak starts or they sputter out at the end. Not this one, it starts out strong and keeps going. Also it NEVER sets up a long arc like most shonen do. It's just there to have fun. I love this show.

GS Mikami: Gokuraku Daisakusen!!
It was really weird to see a franchise like this get the high budget standalone movie treatment. It looks really nice (the opening scene after the flashback looks great), and the action scenes are nothing to scoff at. When the film is trying to be comedic, it is still dead on the money like the TV series was. The problem is whereas the TV anime was 95% comedy and 5% seriousness, the film is split about 50-50. The plot is way too serious for the characters and gags that have been previously established. It's not a good serious plot either, Oda Nobunaga is a fucking vampire for crying out loud. By the 3rd act it feels like some weird kiddied down combination of Wicked City/Ninja Scroll and Patlabor 2. The comedy and characters are still golden before too much of the plot is introduced, but once they have to be intertwined with the seriousness it just gets awkward. With the heightened budget and reunion of the entire cast, this would've made a great celebration of the series and what it stands for ala Utena's, Eva's, and Ideon's films, but it is so tonally screwy that it's just thoroughly mediocre.

Guilty Crown
Jesus this show is bad. Shit characters, awful writing, poor story. Once you get past the terrible first three episodes, it moves into "barely watchable trainwreck" territory, but never is actually enjoyable. Basically it's 22 episodes of a wannabe Shinji and a Char ripoff fighting each other over some fucking nonsense. First half is kinda tolerable but grinds to a fucking halt every time it's at school or the MC's home. After a certain point the show COMPLETELY stops making sense. None of the plot points connect with each other, the show's logic is so fucked, there is some truly terrible planning on the staff's part. For a show that wants to be taken so seriously, it has some incredibly juvenile stuff like a loli maid catgirl and misunderstanding ecchi moments that wholly kill the mood. The characters have no consistency in their actions and I didn't care what happened to them. Art, music, and Tetsuo Araki's bombastic direction are the only good points. Look... remote mechs, genocide, crystals, hexagons; this shit should be so cool! But it's all just so bad. Not to mention it rips off of basically every sci fi anime from the past three decades to some degree.

The most enjoyable "normal" sports anime I've seen. I wasn't annoyed by any of the cast, which is rare in shonen in general, and the two leads make a great duo. I love the character animation in this show, and overall it's pretty well animated. It still eventually does do some things that tick me off about sports anime (mainly in the final match), and it bothers me how similar the show's progression is to other sports shows I've seen (mainly KNB), but whatever; I watched 13 episodes in one day, that doesn't happen often

Artistically gorgeous attempt at a story of mature romance. I call it an attempt, not a successful one becauze wooh boy does it fuck up. This is a case of an anime being ruined by its ending in elemental form. With other shows, there's 13-26 episodes worth of material that could lead the show to go wrong, but when an anime is only an hour long, it's easy to see where it dun goofed. Everything up until the moment is very enjoyable; a meditative and sometimes beautiful look at the grieving process and what you would say to a deceased loved one if you had another chance, coupled with some minor ruminations on human emotion. To me at least, that gets tossed out of the window at the end with a plot event that invalidates most of what came beforehand while having not too much of an effect on the overall ending. It still maintains the same themes, but through a different scope, and I hated it. It came off as lazy and bad storytelling 101. Something really special until like the 45 minute mark, then it's just special for the wrong reasons

Hashire Melos (Movie)
Pleasantly entertaining. I thought the framing device held down the adaptation of the story in Aoi Bungaku, and this film was the solution I was looking for. The muted realism character designs and Satoshi Kon art give the film a distinctly non-Japanese look. The backgrounds are vast, the animation is warm and lively. The artistic richness and ambient music give the film a nice atmosphere; one that is barren but hopeful. I particularly like how the film uses wind. It really does feel like you're in a different time. I think making Melos a big oaf instead of a bishonen works much better, and I like that the film portrays the king as a oblivious jerk that can be rational when he wants to instead of a psychotic maniac like in Aoi Bungaku. It also covers a wider range of emotions and feelings like fear, regret, and humor. The character interactions are brief, but heartfelt and worthwhile. It functions well as a parable, and also as two very basic character studies. It is slow paced, but in the good, contemplative sort of way. Tempted to give it a 9, but it is a simple story that's just told rather well. As usual I'll think about it. I recommend it.

File this under Shows That Make Me Want To Kill Myself. It sets itself up to be an innocent possibly campy shoujo fantasy romp. It then proceeds to introduce some of the most cardboard and uninteresting characters I have ever seen and have them partake in some of the most bland and dullest episodic adventures ever conceived. This was before dropping shows was a concept to me, so I tried to get it over with as quickly as possible. If you have to eat a turd, would you rather nibble on it for days on end or get it over with in one bite?

Extended trailer for a film... I guess there's a minuscule chance it's in development hell or being worked on, but if there hasn't been any mention of it since the 2010 announcement, my inner cynic would have to assume it's cancelled (some sites say it was, but I can't find an official confirmation). The motorized unicycle is cool, and from the looks of it the film would've been a movement oriented action romp. Still, I can kinda see why it never came to fruition. It's cool, but there's nothing immediately attention-grabbing about it like say Redline, and the animation/art is nice, but not unique. It's just sorta an amalgam of Yuasa, Imaishi, and Koji Morimoto. Also since it's a pilot, the budget isn't up to snuff. It probably would've been cool, but nothing earth shattering

Getting past the plausibility of the premise, it can be a rather sweet show. I think the simple designs work well, and the character animation is warm. I really like where they initially take the premise, but once it begins to affect the plot less and less, the show becomes a pretty rote school life show until the final few episodes. The characters are mostly enjoyable enough for the anime to get by on their personalities till then, but the show isn't breaking any new ground. That being said, the premise mattering less as the show goes on is a sign of the dynamic character development taking place. The show does a really good job at depicting the passage of time by character development, and by the end you really do feel like you've spent a school year with the cast. The mystery behind the amnesia is lame, but I love the emotional drama it causes in the final episodes. It demonstrates the show at its highest potential, I do think they could've taken that emotion a lot further though. It just restored the status quo instead of progressing the relationships between any of the characters.

Ixion Saga DT
Great show, another example of a comedy that starts out strong and never slows down. As far as MMO anime go, this is the best I've seen. I credit its comedic brilliance to Shinji Takamatsu. This show is crude, lewd, rude, and everything in between. It makes Gintama seem like Shakespeare. But it works well. I also like how instead of being all over the place and moving from gag to gag, they stick to one base joke/concept and run with it for the whole episode. The plot is fairly simple, but the elaborate and outlandish episodic plots is what makes the show special. Everything from the MC forming his own religion, to dueling a tsundere, to karaoking for his own life, and more gets covered. The characters are also simple, but are quite hilarious and gel well together. It's great that the good guys are funny, but the antagonist and his tragically flawed bishonen brigade may be more entertaining. All around hilarious. Its art style is colorful and modern without resorting to moe. Wraps up nicely, has one of the strangest climaxes ever, and there's still room for a sequel as the show points out at the end.

JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 3: Stardust Crusaders
This show was an absolute joy to watch on a weekly basis and I'm sad to see it temporarily go. There are some truly superb episodes in here and even the weaker fights are still leagues above typical weaker episodes in other shows. As much I loved it, part 3 is basically all buildup to its earth-shattering finale, so with only half of the source material covered (and some of the best parts being in the unadapted half), it definitely feels incomplete. I'm glad another season is confirmed and that I have the hindsight of having read the manga, but on its own it's just a great villain of the week show with fantastic art/animation, epic characters, cool fights, strong music, entertaining voice acting, and a good sense of humor. There's not much else to ask for besides an actual ending, so I give it a strong recommendation.

One of the few anime I'd label as outright disgusting. It's not the brutality that takes place, I consider myself to be a fan of violence and gore in anime, here it's just more of the context and how utterly pointless it is. Immediately after viewing, it's a gut-wrenching and soul crushing misanthropic tale, that completely lacks any sort of emotion or humanity, interspersed with infodumps, all for the sake of a considerably minor character detail. Even within the scope of the series' endgame, this has little meaning and it's rather awful to sit through.

Best film in the series. Partially cuz of how it's more disconnected to the bullshit that ties together all the other films, but also because of it's fucking brilliant direction and cinematography. Sure, all the other films have a high budget and solid animation, but what they animate is often so... mundane? Even the action scenes in the other films are just people flying past each other really quickly while clashing swords. This film's visuals are widely creative, playful yet bombastic, and actually give you something neat to look at as you're assaulted with abstractness and infodumps for almost two hours (despite the length, this one went by the quickest). The story is just as difficult to understand as the others, but what it deals with and how it's presented just made it... infinitely more interesting to me.

I don't like Type Moon character designs. Music was pretty good. I like the maturation of the cast across various installments. I also appreciate having like the least idealistic version of Japan in anime ever. Guh, fuck this.

Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran
Between the endless blue skies, nice animation, and relatively harmless humor, there's something about this show I find incredibly relaxing. Not to the point complacency, but it's really easy to just sit back and soak yourself in the show's peaceful atmosphere. The show is a good mixture of comedy and drama; the comedy is better, but the drama holds its ground. The show's writing is a lot better than you would expect, which gives the show a kinda of understated yet in your face sense of humor. Meow is a significantly better character than Ran, simply because Ran is too deadpan and sake-centered for her own good at times. The show used Meow however they pleased, but often failed use Ran in interesting ways. I do appreciate that neither of them are treated as sex objects though. Calming music. Fight scenes look great, the rest of the animation is sufficient Madhouse quality (episode 7 looks like shit though). Best episode is either 10 or 13.

Where to begin? The first half of the series is a complete waste of time. The plot goes nowhere, the characters are incredibly unlikable, and it almost completely fails to be funny. Things improve once they get to Earth. Still, the second half of the plot continues to get massively sidetracked. No solid character foundations were established in the first half, so while the characters improve, they suffer from wildly inconsistent behavior. It manages to waste time even within the final ten episodes, many important plot events eventually get invalidated, which makes you wonder the point of them in the first place. Most character deaths are lazy and unnecessary. Newtypes are co-opted into some bullshit deus ex machina, contrivances and plot armor are lathered on, and the villains totally lack the pragmatic realism that made the villains of Zeta so gripping. After all that shit I just spewed, I admit it's difficult to stay mad at this show for very long. I don't know why. I like the art, music, battles, some of the characters, and occasionally it made me laugh. Despite all the problems, it's decently watchable once you get past the first 20 or so episodes. I don't know if it fried my brain to the point where I can't criticize it, but I survived. ZZ/10

One hell of a mecha show. It does so many things right and beyond that other robot shows usually screw up, like its music, antagonists, pacing, and more. It's basically like "they actually went there - the anime", not in that's it's just shock value, but some of what it depicts is nuts. It totally fits in the show's logic, it's just other series would avoid such outcomes to avoid being too dark or realistic. Not to say it's that cynical, it has very natural humor and quite a few good running gags. All around the characters are fantastic. Those introduced are immediately compelling, and those who return are greatly improved upon, and to be honest Kamille>>>>>>Amuro. It fantastically manages to weave a real robot political intrigue story with a coming of age/loss of innocence story (most teenagers just get thrown into mechs and that's that), all under the veil of 80's anime sensibilities. Tomino really got his shit together for this show despite being manically depressed.

Pros: A protagonist nicknamed Jojo, fucking MECHA CENTAURS, a cast full of badass adults, cool looking mech, like half the series is just play-by-plays of massive battles, the OP sounds like if Duran Duran was Japanese. Cons: Pacing is abysmal, story is very condensed cuz it got cancelled, has tendency to get sidetracked whenever they do something interesting, every good guy is cooler than the MC, all the villains are lame, some things are lesser rehashes of Votoms, others would be rehashed better in Lazyner, very obvious it ran in a kids timeslot at times, little blood shown, lots of exposition, contrivances, and uncomfortable loli fanservice. Verdict: It has issues

I was really indifferent on seeing the story recapped despite the pacing issues I had with it like I did with Layzner. Maybe it's because I knew there was no expanded ending to reward me for watching it. It did some parts better than the TV series, but all in all it was around the same quality, with the same issues. The alternate universe episode is thematically darker than the rest of the show, but still pretty middle of the road and once again does something that Layzner would go on to do better. The extended, high budget, mystical fight scene towards the end was really great though. If only the whole series was like that. And I really liked the ending for some reason. Overall thoughts on the franchise: It's pretty different, and while I respect it overall, it could've been executed a lot better.

I wanna die. I can't bring myself to give it .5 stars, but it is undoubtedly one of the worst anime I have seen. I have seen the argument that it's meant to be satire, but I cannot accept it, the writing isn't well enough for that. If it is meant to be satire, it fails because it just makes me hate what it's trying to spoof even more. I remembered little of the film from when I watched it two years ago, and given the appreciation I've found for Oshii's other works since then, I figured it was time for a rewatch. It is an absolutely fantastic work. Sound, art (just look at the detail in some of the moment's backgrounds), animation (CG integration blows most of today's out of the water), story, characters are all there. I do not recommend this being baby's first intellectual anime; I feel like you won't fully appreciate it, as I believe I didn't my first time. The plot doesn't get dumbed down and there's a lot of symbolism. The dialogue is expertly crafted and can actually be funny. I feel like the movie just washes over you at times rather than you watching it. It can be truly ethereal. One thing I noticed on the 2nd time through is the lighting. It's just so distinctive. There was a little bit of it in the Patlabor films, but the shadows are practically pulsating in this film. A must watch classic

The show's tone and story are all over the place. As Shiroe said, "we aren't desperate enough". They cannot do serious political talks one moment and switch to a character throwing a tantrum because they don't want to clean the next and not expect it to be jarring. Everyone gets over the fact they're trapped in an MMO way too quickly, where is the existential terror? It tries to divide its time between the macro and human aspects of such a concept, neither with full success. The more personal storylines have average to awful characters and the macro storylines are just kind of dull. Some interesting characters pop up as the show goes on, but they are never properly focused on to make them interesting. An UNBELIEVABLE amount of the show is people explaining stuff to one another. Like, how is that even considered entertaining? Not just your standard anime infodumps it goes above and beyond. It's also funny how the show is so catered to preexisting otaku standards. The main character is already a mild mannered genius who is good at what he needs to be good at, doesn't change much, and doesn't care what people think of him. As he's followed around by a little girl who calls him master. Ugh

It's a rather average romance beyond the fact that it stars two dudes. Decent premise, the otaku angle was unnecessary. The animation was very basic at times, it kept using this one annoying walk cycle over and over, I found the designs to be kinda ugly, and those random animals popping up became annoying. Except for the elephant. Romance anime isn't known for its deep relationships, but I had a problem with this one. I felt like Ryoma was in love with the ideal of Izumi from his past, and after the shock of discovering the truth, he continued to think he was attracted to Izumi in the hope that he would he would rediscover his shattered ideal somewhere. I'll admit they sort of address this, but they never give an actual answer to shake off these feelings. The two talk a little, but I feel like neither of them have justified attractions to each other beyond mostly superficial things. Once again, anime isn't good with relationships to begin with, and I'm not sure if it stuck out to me more than usual because it was BL, but it bugged me throughout the series. I was worried they weren't gonna resolve anything, but they decently tied things up. 10 episodes is far too short, things were just beginning. Rei is best guy

If you're going to watch this, watch it before Do You Remember Love. This show can be really good and at times downright fantastic, but it is plagued by extremely varied animation quality, occasionally poor pacing, and a dismal third arc (why it was cancelled). Still it can be a lot of fun, and some plot events are handled here better than in the movie. Still, there's a hell of a lot less to complain about DYRL. Now that I've seen more mecha anime of similar length from the same time period, Macross actually avoids a lot of the reoccurring problems I had in all these shows. It still has issues of its own, but I think I was initially a little hard on it.

Mahoujin Guruguru
Great parody of JRPGs. The art is permanently set on chibi style except when it's making fun of shoujo character designs. It takes a few episodes to get going, but afterwards it's consistently funny and pretty much pokes fun at all aspects you'd expect to find in a JRPG. I think they overuse the old man character, but underuse the two hapless heroes that are always a step behind the main characters. Thankfully they do come into greater use towards the end of the series. The 10 episodes leading up to the finale are less focused and slightly weaker than the rest, but still fun. The last episode is really sweet and does a perfect job of embodying the message of the rest of the show.

Makai Toshi Shinjuku
20 something supernaturally inclined Gary Stu martial artist teams up with the Japanese President's daughter who has a British accent and a Mexican midget on rollerskates to kick the shit out of demons. You may think such a premise sets it up to be so bad it's good, but all in all it's an honestly entertaining action movie. It's a Kawajiri work, so the action is fantastic. What's cool here is that most of the foes here are less humanoid than in his other works, which leads to some interesting variety. Lots of cool shots and backgrounds. The whole thing has a surreal horror aura to it, the closest comparison to the setting is Skyrim's Soul Cairn. The plot is dumb in hell, but do you see live action popcorn flicks for their story? Go watch it

Makaryuudo Demon Hunter
Fun supernatural OVA. It has great horror imagery and nice character designs (the demon girl's hair is pretty cute, something I don't usually say). It benefits by not going too much in depth with what's going on, and it slightly stumbles when it tries to. The animation has its weak moments. And it is very noticeably rushed, it really needed to be 45 or 60 minutes. I've found one unreliable source (Bakabt) that says it's based off a manga, and a few poorly translated mentions of it on Japanese only pages, so I guess that explains things. Seems impossible to find though

This OVA is way more fun than it has any right to be. It does what so many of its counterparts do, throw you into a different world with little to no explanation. But this world is really interesting, they don't go out of their way to explain it through bad exposition, and the somewhat generic plot is really easy to follow. The art design of everything is great and the animation is really fluid the whole time instead of slowly dying at the end. I love what the OVA does with water, and the mechas look amazing. The characters aren't anything special, but they did not get on my nerves in fact I enjoyed all of them. Great music too. I had a big smile on my face the entire time while watching this-- it's just so fun and carefree. It never asks its audience for more attention or commitment than it deserves and it never fails to entertain. I wish there was more. P.S the protagonist hides his mecha inside a giant fish.

Part 1: A lot of people consider it to be one of the top 80's anime, but it did little for me. It's characters and tone are far too immature for the story it is trying to tell and as much I love Bubblegum Crisis and Macross this is just too overwhelmingly 80's for me at times. That transforming mech is cool, though. I give it a 5. Part 2: Now it has a characters and a tone worthy of such a story, but it's moved on to some weird B movie plot that is kind of connected to part 1. The character designs are great and the climax sure is pretty, but otherwise the budget is left right up down all over the place. I give it a 7. Part 3: Almost unwatchable. This was made far after the other two, so it feels extra unneeded and it's connection to them is pretty paper thin. Animation is very bad. I give it a 3. Overall: I wish I liked Part 1 more (may consider rewatching in the future), Part 2 is neat, Part 3 can fuck off and die.

Mekakucity Actors
Individual scenes, characters, and gags (Momo eating textbooks, Marry's poetry) work well, but it all becomes a cluster of fucks when put together, especially in the story department. I'm all for abstract storytelling, but you need some sort of indication that there is an actual coherent story to assemble. Probably the weakest TV anime I've seen since... the last Shaft show I watched? HMMMMMMM. It actually has a lot in common with Sasami-san@Ganbaranai. In both cases, the first episode is the best, and make the show seem relatively harmless. Then each proceed to derail themselves over the remainder of the show. They go from entertaining, to tolerable, to frustrating, to unwatchable. And the source material is adapted in such away that it's basically fanservice for existing franchise fans and a big fuck you to those who aren't. At least Mekakucity isn't as outright repulsive as Sasami-san, and it's refreshing to see even fans of the source material turn their backs on the adaptation for once.

After watching episode 1, I was impressed at how focused and cohesive the anime was for being a typical 80's OVA. It was cute, funny, understandable, and entertaining; pretty much all you can ask for from these sort of things. Episode 2 is a step downwards, you can see its grasp starting to slip, but some of the initial charm is still there. Episode 3 is your standard nonsensical 80's OVA, embracing rapid character introductions, bad plot twists, poor characterization, awkward attempts at religious allegories, a dramatic shift in tone from the show's beginning, and painful sexism. The art remains vivid and imaginative throughout; this OVA may have the ugliest anime dragon ever, and who doesn't love bikini armor magical girls? The humor is still good in the later episodes when they actually use it. Starts out quite fun, by the end it's a mess that's difficult to watch.

Imagine a James Bond anime. Except that he pilots a giant robot and his name is Banjo. Yep, this show is fucking amazing. It bucks most of the negative conventions of the classic super robot era such as a nonexistant budget, rampant sexism, and only being a toy commercial. It helps that the show is absolutely hilarious. Not in the standard anime ways such as running gags, overreacting, and so-bad-it's-good. The script is great for a super robot show. Laugh out loud stuff; everyone from the butler to the obligatory child to the villains of the week crack wise, and it's great. Some episodes feel more like a really strange sitcom than an actual mecha show. I don't say this often, but the girls are HOT. I think it helps that it's one of those situations where the main characters are supposed to be 18, but look in their late 20s. The show doesn't live and die by its robot. Yes, it appears in every episode, but often much of the action/plot don't involve it and it won't show up till the very end. The key to making the episodic villain format work is variation, and the show has plenty of it. How the villains in this show work gives them a greater degree of personality than your standard monster of the week. Occasionally it feels like the staff doesn't give a fuck

It's hard to believe a series this obscure was once licensed in North America. I think its chances were tanked early on because the first four episodes are the weakest. Initially it's a small scale space war Gundam ripoff that is too dull, too vague, and despite all the exposition they give you at the beginning of the first episode, it doesn't make as much sense as it should. But the story is split between the above and a tale of some plucky kids living with alcoholic hobo war veterans on an abandoned satellite. Abandoned satellites play a role in Gundam too, but this show takes a much different direction with it by making such a life seem... enjoyable? The group of characters are pretty atypical to standard counterparts and are all very likable, yes there is a character named Balzack. The first story improves as the series goes on by gradually intertwining it with the 2nd storyline, with some really unexpected developments along the way, and a very strong ending. It has good music, but the animation budget is comically low. They take every shortcut available and then some. Funny to think this is a TV series because it was cheaper than making it an OVA, talk about full circle. Despite all its faults, it's very watchable and unique by the end. I recommend it

Very enjoyable supernatural noir anime. The opening four episode arc that was originally an OVA is a bit anticlimactic, but the standalone episodes that fill the rest of the series are all very solid (particularly episode 6 and the finale despite how cliched it is stand out). I also think it's one of the series to best handle shonen-ai elements as a plot device and character development catalyst rather than purely fetishization. Catchy OP too

*Looks both ways* What if I told you this was my favorite hentai as of yet? Porn is incredibly subjective, I think it's often difficult to measure it beyond good or bad, and it seems futile to solely judge it on how closely it lines up with your fetishes. That being said, this anime has great art and good enough animation, ninja clans with secret sex techniques,, and appeals to my personal tastes without repulsing me too much. I give it credit for focusing on one fetish-- exhibitionism, which most hentai don't bother with, and then to approach the whole thing from a relatively sex-positive approach is even better. Way too much hentai anime rely on degradation and shaming, while I think it's impossible for hentai to avoid that (because apparently the Japanese have issues), this anime does a pretty great job. And it's hilarious.

Surprisingly great. It dives so deep into the cesspool of otaku culture that it emerges from the other end, reborn. It's so self serving and pandering that it comes back around and becomes quirky and fun. That's not to say it's just an extreme version of your typical LN anime, its take on NEETs/otakus is much more cynical, skittish, and slimy than other counterparts. It's definitely not more innocent than other LN anime, in fact it's probably one of the trashiest anime I've seen and enjoyed. It just works. Pretty obvious the director also did the great last 2 eps of Aoi Bungaku, and the animation is fluid and gorgeous. The whole thing is a wildly entertaining sugar rush. My only complaints are its blatant non ending (but the point they stopped it at worked well), and that probably 97% of episode 9's logic is complete bullshit.

Reviewed. I definitely was not planning on it, though. Whereas with other show's I've reviewed, it was while I was still watching the shows that I came to the decision that I would review them. I had no idea I'd be reviewing this anime until I was trying to write a note for it and realized there was no way I'd be able to shorten down what I had to say about the show in order to make it fit on one screen (it's a pet peeve of mine). That being said, my review is basically just a more fleshed out version of my original note, so it's a lot more informal than my others.

Rance: Sabaku no Guardian
Kinda hilarious, kinda horrible. Hear me out, for a hentai this is pretty enjoyable. The sex isn't the focus; there are one or two hardcore moments (and I mean only moments), some references to rape, and tons of boob shots. Besides that it's a fantasy comedy. Except it is completely morally reprehensible in a hilarious manner. I'd be a little stunned if a normal fantasy comedy was this sociopathic, but throw in sex and violence and it's definitely something to behold. Nice designs, good enough budget, I like how the main character is animated, and the show's dinosaurs look really well for some reason. Made me go WHAT a few times, but also made me laugh too

You get thrown in to the middle of a story with little insight as to what the hell is going on, and it's over before you can figure that out. I'm not sure if a sequel would've helped. I like the mecha designs, and most scenes with robots are well animated. I found the voice actors to be extremely annoying for some reason.

Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!?
Up until the halfway point, I thought this may just be the most average in quality anime I've ever seen. Then the cracks started to form. I rarely ever watch anime like this, but weird premise and mashup of genres drew me in. I was hoping it would result in crazy comedy and plots, but for the most part the show is rather boring. Each girl gets a mini arc representative of their genre and none are particularly interesting or original. The show doesn't have many good jokes, and it continually overuses the bad ones. All the weirdness feels wasted since it's strongly hinted the MC will end up with the "normal" girl in the end, who of course may not be normal as indicated by the Read The Light Novel plot developments strung throughout the show and at the end of the last episode. FUCK. None of the characters are intriguing, and I was bothered by how easily manipuable the whole cast (including the MC) was. Yurika is the best character, besides Hercules-chan of course

Sabage-bu!
A heartwarming story of a schoolgirl who decides to embrace her inner sociopath. I normally would've skipped over it after reading the incredibly shallow premise which boils down to gun fetishism and moe, neither of which I care for. However, something about the ultra-saccharine promo art of them simultaneously brandishing firearms and eating gun-shaped sweets intrigued me, so I cautiously decided that I'd watch it. Totally worth it! This show is hilarious and incredibly stupid in a way that makes me reconsider calling other anime such a thing in the past. I like the pastel-heavy color scheme and although it's a pretty cheap show there are some great reaction shots and gag faces. There's two specific segments in the show that entirely fail without redemption, but beyond that this anime is a riot. The parody of Predator could've been done better though

Has a progression eerily similar to Mekakucity Actors. First episode is alright with interesting visuals, and it's all downhill from there. Story is a confused, flaming light novel adaptation of a mess. This one's plot and characters are more mired in the gross and pitiful aspects of otaku culture than Mekakucity Actors, though

School Days
The show isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I think a lot of its hate comes from it is simply a very uncomfortable experience. That doesn't automatically make it bad. I think most of the show's flaws lie in execution. In reality, things would have blown up in Makoto's face MUCH sooner; why does Makoto bang 8 chicks before remotely facing any consequences? Girls would stop being drawn to him; I can see at best him nailing 3-4 of them before people catch on and stay the fuck away from him. The knee jerk response is it's a harem genre deconstruction, but I feel it's a case of the show channeling realism in some areas while ignoring others, making it uneven. At times it's a standard school anime with NTR in the background (BORING), the school festival is a plot vehicle but they spend WAY too much time on it, and Nanami is useless. The last two ep. are the best, but those prior to them are basically the show's peak absurdity so it doesn't gel. I get the intent and it helped that I disliked harems/school life anime going in, but it I feel like I still have some subconscious negative bias towards its taboo subject manner which isn't helped by meh production values and deconstructive half measures. It's a messy affair

Actually quite good. It's messy and unfocused, but it comes together nicely. It also plays most of it's insanity completely straight which makes it feel natural. Surprisingly well animated, the art style is also quite solid and stands out from the masses (I don't care for the loli basically strutting around in a bikini, but she does so less as the series goes on). The characters are strange but enjoyable and end up forming a really nice family dynamic which I was not expecting. The loli is actually above tolerable too! I also give it props for having quite a different setting/established universe, but rarely explaining it outright. They might just mention it for a second and you'll be like "wait, what?!?". I'd ultimately describe the show as imaginative. Has one of the better hot springs episodes I've seen. Reminds me a bit of Samurai Flamenco-- in a good way. I credit a lot of the show's goodness to the director. Hopefully it gets second season.

Tomino's best non-Gundam work. The initial premise and world are very gripping, the anime has a solid message and slickly designed mechs. It avoids many of the problems associated with Gundam, and its humor more resembles the cleverness of Daitarn 3 than the lowest common denominator stock humor of ZZ Gundam. The cast is a colorful array of Dr. Seuss story rejects, voice acting is above par, and all are rather likable. The show is smart enough to always be changing up the situation without feeling desperate, and its ending is really strong. In some ways it's a more real robot show than Gundam, except then it goes to treat physics as a joke. Some of the character deaths are done poorly, and some redundancies probably could be taken out and make the show only 45-46 episodes without many problems, but hey I could say both of those things about Zeta Gundam too. Shigurui
This is an adaptation of a martial arts manga made by the author of Apocalypse Zero, you should know what to expect. This thing is dead fucking serious, sometimes to the point of absurdity or disgust. Its story has potential but it's all squandered because the whole series is a flashback like Berserk, but at least in Berserk's case they got close to reaching the present. Shigurui wasn't even nearby. It's at its best when it's about guys punching eachother's jaws off and picking teeth out of their fists, and Hiroshi Hamasaki is really the best guy they could've gotten for the job, but it is sadly a flawed work.

Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis
Appropriately epic and a ton of fun. Admittedly my favorite parts of the show were when Favaro and Kaisar were just dicking around, and the crazy action set pieces. While the 2nd half of the show retains the set pieces, it swaps out the dicking around for more standard fantasy gobbledygook, which sadly puts the character interactions (one of the show's biggest strengths) out of focus. Still entertaining for the most part though. I also love that it's an anime that actually TRIES. I know that statement is incredibly opening ended, but with this show it can be applied in so many ways. The intricate art design, mostly great animation, epic scope, stellar music, actual characters (which have great designs btw); overall the show just declined to take the easy way out which way too fucking many anime do. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's not often you can label an anime (especially one that isn't an original concept) ambitious these days, and you can tell the staff had so much fun making it. I would not mind a 2nd season.

All CG animation looks best in combat scenes, but most are small scale skirmishes that don't utilize the full potential, until episodes 11 and 12. Has some issues still, but 2D/CG integration would've looked worse. Complex scenes like multiple characters moving in different directions, dialogue scenes, and simple things like objects being dropped are rough/awkward. The seriousness of the story, the atypical music, and the animation come together to make a unique artistic experience. Still, the manga is so much more of one in a completely different way. Probably my biggest differing complaint is that it often fails to capture the sheer scale of everything, which is such a common theme in Nihei's works that it bothered me they only achieved it like 33% of the time. The anime is really good, but it'll always be in the manga's shadow to me.

Really sweet and often hilarious show and is probably the anime of the 2010s to best use sight gags and reaction shots. Unfortunately given the premise, this is the kind of story that needs to have all of it told (aka, her making it to stardom and probably falling in love with that dude) in order to maximize its impact, a similar problem that My Little Monster had. Thankfully there's much along the short piece of the journey to enjoy. Sometimes it's too shoujo-y for its own good

Okay, this is a little awkward. Have you ever been so bothered by the feeling that you rated something too low that you can't get it out of your head until you change the rating against all better judgement? It's only a .5 star raise, but it's tricky since that gives it the highest rating and I've written a review for my previous score. I do intend on rewatching the series, but I just feel like something clicked all of the sudden for me and I need to give the show this rating. Weird, right?

This show hits so many of my personal preferences in anime that it's nuts. Episodes can be hit or miss, but it's always interesting, and its approach to character design variation is almighty. Animation and music are generally very good, comedy usually succeeds too. It is stupidly amazing. Hits a strong winning streak in the middle. Favorite episodes: 3, 4, 7, 9, 12. Street Fighter II Movie
I can say with confidence that Street Fighter II: The Movie is the best fighting game anime. Given that's not a high bar to clear, but even then its closest competition, the Fatal Fury trilogy doesn't really have a chance. The fight scenes in the film are meticulously and brilliantly coordinated, they rarely devolve into special move spam, the few occurrences in which they're used are totally justified. I was bit hesitant and confused to see the director of Night On The Galactic Railroad was behind this, but it makes sense. Both have masterful character animation. Even pitted against other gorgeously animated hallmarks of the 20th century, the characters in this film don't quite move like anything else. It's not always perfect looking, but the fluidity is immaculate without going off model, which is important when most of your cast is musclebound. Everything from Chung Li's boobs to Vega and his cronies walking are given top treatment. The backgrounds are gorgeous too, artistically this film is perfect. I didn't go in expecting the story to be Shakespeare, but I never expected a fighting game anime to be so melancholic. The artistic realism, peaceful music, and reserved story give the film a very serene and somber feel even with the ridiculous outfits.

Tenamonya Voyagers
Great little OVA. It's an early Akiyuki Shinbo work, so he mostly limits himself to screwing around with shadows and jump cuts rather than the full on visual assaults of his present endeavors. The story is pretty simple but really well done, it's carried by the strength of the characters. It doesn't try to make any of its all female cast romantically appealing, 99% of the time what they're doing is for the sake of comedy: all of their quirks continually get pitted against each other and whatever zany situation they're up against this time, all four girls are pretty much class-A failures and it's all played for laughs which is nice. The 4th episode is basically Shinbo trolling the audience for 29 minutes, but it doesn't feel exploitative and completely fits in the with absurdity of the rest of the show. Great art (much variation) and character (much expression) designs, animation is really fluid, music is nice. There is little to complain about besides that there isn't more.

Tentai Senshi Sunred
It's like the Cromartie High School of super sentai shows, and it is hilarious. You do not need to know anything about super sentai/tokusatsu shows in order to enjoy it. My only complaints are some segments/gags are overused just a little too much, and the show looks ridiculously cheap (I acknowledge that that is partially intentional). Definitely watch it.

Tentai Senshi Sunred 2nd Season
Essentially the same as the first season. They wise up and introduce more segment/gag variety, but the sketches that features the aliens are noticeably weaker than the show's usual output. Thankfully there's not many of them, and the show is still worth it.

Terra Formars
Look Hiroshi Hamasaki, I love you man, but this show kinda sucks. Setting aside the censorship which thankfully becomes less of a problem, I've read some of the manga and this anime has several problems that the source material doesn't. First off is the pacing, dear Jesus. It's a tightrope act from the start due to the 13 episodes only covering ONE DAY. But then the show continually breaks up the action with poorly timed character background stories, only 50% of which are interesting. Then there's the animation. Closeup still shots can look good, but anything at a distance or that is actually animated usually looks like shit. Lots of off model stuff, the enemies are usually rendered in poor CG, and most action scenes are obscured or put through filters. Some characters and fights can be kind of entertaining, but it's super uneven and if it's not getting a second season (which I sadly would still watch), it's just a blatant manga advertisement that was a waste of time.

Terra Formars: Bugs 2-hen
Solid adaptation of what so far is the best part of the Terra Formars story. The Bugs 2 arc works better than what I've seen/read of the Annex 1 arc for a few reasons. It doesn't get continually interrupted by unwanted backstories and internal monologues, and the focus is on Shokichi, who I consider to be the best and most developed character (he does get some focus in the Annex 1 arc, but there's too many characters). Anime specific advantages include that it actually has a budget! If the TV anime is below TV quality, then the OVAs are at least at TV quality. So now it's just like watching an episode of Shigurui. The uncensored gore is highly appreciated and unlike the TV series where even when it's uncensored they'll try and obscure it or put it through filters in order to save money. This is just competently animated goofy looking super soldiers and aliens kicking the shit out of each other, complete with hammy Jojo's narration. The adaptation actually makes more sense than the story in the manga, and a few added scenes like the final one in the restaurant work really nice. Fun!

Tokyo Godfathers
Charming, touching, heartwarming, and hilarious quasi-Christmas film with amazing writing and character animation. A bit slow to start, but once it gets going it's so much fun. This is an anime that's meant to be enjoyed; at the end of the day, if you sit there nitpicking every plot point after it's over and done with, then you've missed the point.

Uchuu no Stellvia
One of the few anime I'd consider uplifting. Yes, there's conflict, but most of it is against not sentient things like cosmic phenomenons or your own insecurities, and the conflicts against sentient beings do not go the usual route that anime go. So it's more about surviving and getting along as a human race while being the best you can be rather than anything depressing or cynical. A shame it never got a 2nd season. The dub has some problems and they replace parts that were in English in the Japanese version to Spanish in the dubbed version which is really stupid, but it has a charm to it. Watch it.

Despite being based off of a video game, the character interactions and most of the standalone episode are really good. It helps that the show just coexists in the franchise's universe rather than attempting to adapt a game. Falters slightly with the main plot, but overall solid.

I like where it takes the concept of a guy being psychically linked to a train (he is seized and used by the government to try and capture said train). This OVA is incredibly dull though and moves far too slow. The music and animation can be impressive, but don't particularly improve the experience.

Little less action than I would've liked, but what's still there is really good. The plot is a bit more existing than Kawajiri's other works, but I think the resolution is a dumb twist. Too much rape for me in here, it just felt unjustified (not the actual rape of the victim, but its inclusion in the film) and didn't further develop the character like in Ninja Scroll. Still pretty solid, and that opening narration is great. Sends chills down my spine.

Zankyou no Terror
Huge letdown. Production wise, this was the best looking non-experimental show in a very, very, very long time. Fantastic music too. I never cared about the 3 main characters, I found the show more interesting when it focused on the side characters. I'm also very at odds with how terrorism was used, I'd take up 3 pages if I went in depth, but it was used poorly. I loved how overall devoid of typical otaku influences the show was, but at its core it was a story of youthful rebellion and romance (which Watanabe has demonstrated he's good at in the past), but told through the veils of edgy-by-Japanese standards terrorism. Then it comes back around to otakudom by having teens fulfill unrealistic positions. So I shifted gears and tried to appreciate it as what it was trying to be; okay, it's still bad. The doomed romance was a failure because of the stagnation of Lisa's character development, and the youth against the man to uncover the truth aspects were also held back by them withholding the truth for far too long and the main characters truly never being against the man. They only politely oppose authority. Shibazaki and the gang were tolerable, but had a well-worn story. It's a shame to see Watanabe finally made a stinker, I'd love to see it on BD, though.

Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo: Amazing Twins
Similar to various short OVAs of yesteryear, except they swapped out gore for moe and now they can't draw cars for shit. At least boobs are a constant. Most of the show's weaknesses are due to its short running time. If things were expanded upon they may have worked, but most things feel cliched or too vague. Junichi Sato still has a knack for character animation and comedy, but gag faces just don't look as fun on moe blobs, and the comedy is obstructed by the lame grimdark quasi-magical girl story. It would've worked better as a pure comedy. It tries to be heartfelt in some places and it's always a few steps short of evoking empathy, but it never succeeds. Animation is pretty average TV quality, still manages to squeeze some really bad CG in there. It has one of those stock endings that makes my bullshit meter go thru the roof. I would've watched an entire show about the drunk fortune teller.
