I am about to finish re-watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai & I was curious to see why people hated Satoko so much. I used to think she was kind of annoying (when I first watched it ten years ago), but I realize that she’s gone through way too much as an 11-year-old to be expected to not cry & break down; like who normally
gets raped repeatedly (it’s implied that Teppei sells her out to his clients when he keeps her from going to school in Kai, in the previous season she has bruises on her thighs, & Satoshi may have abused her as wellーre-watch episode 10 of season one for proof of this), physically assaulted, & sees the people close to her get killed brutually.
I think all of those things would break a normal personーunless you’re Rika & have
lived through the same month for hundreds of years
or are level S like Keiichi. I would like to know all of you guys’ opinions because it baffles me how people can hate her.
Synopsis: Juniper Jamison is assigned the position of guardian for "deities", humans with superhuman abilities. Will Juniper be able to protect these hermetic humans from their mortal enemies, or will her occupation be the beginning of the end?
I remember people not liking her as well. She never really bothered me. She had a terrible life so it was reasonable. The show name literally has "when they cry" in the title. What do you expect lmao

(haha) RIGHT? It reminds me of when people think that the teenagers in Neon Genesis complain too much!

It’s because people are immature and lack empathy. Given all the terrible things she went through her reactions were reasonable, she even handled things really well. She was also quite smart and mature for her age, it’s a pity that’s she’s not popular.
You mentioned Evangelion and it’s another perfect example. Honestly what did people expect from teenagers in those circumstances? Besides none of them had it easy before.
i was honestly so surprised to find out how hated she is by other viewers because she's always been my second favorite (next to rika). a lot of people complain about how all she does is cry and beg for her brother but i mean like... she's abused on a daily basis and has severe ptsd and she's only like 10 um im pretty sure i would be sad too :(
She is less popular compared to Rika or Rena of course. But the only people who hate her just don't know how to see from another person point of view, and messages from Higurashi like child abuse and traumatic experiences just failed to reach them.

But because the Slave is in that despairing situation, having nothing, it can kill the Emperor !"
I revisited this thread since it's in her arc right now for the 2020 higurashi and I still have never disliked her. A lot of people call her annoying but I feel like that's part of her personality and I just accept it.
I didn't think she was that great of a character(I certainly didn't hate her, but I liked Rika more) until I read the VN. My god she instantly became one of my favorite characters.
Unfortunately, the OG anime cut out a lot of her backstory.
i absolutely hate her voice, she's really one of the only moe characters i've ever heard that sounds like a 40 year old woman straining herself to sound young

because she's annoying af. i found her sympathetic at first, but watching
the entire village lobbying to save her from her uncle when she keeps actively denying that anything bad is going on is maddening. i know that this is really the fault of the inept social workers and not necessarily her fault, but she sure doesn't help her case by laying down and whimpering "nii-nii" every time she gets hit. i mean, wasn't she trying to be strong and not rely on nii-nii so much? this is the opposite of being strong.
I can recognize a lot of the symptoms of BPD in Satoko:
1. An intense fear of abandonment, even going to extreme measures to avoid real or imagined separation or rejection
2. A pattern of unstable intense relationships, such as idealizing someone one moment and then suddenly believing the person doesn't care enough or is cruel
3. Rapid changes in self-identity and self-image that include shifting goals and values, and seeing yourself as bad or as if you don't exist at all
4. Periods of stress-related paranoia and loss of contact with reality, lasting from a few minutes to a few hours
5. Impulsive and risky behavior, such as gambling, reckless driving, unsafe sex, spending sprees, binge eating or drug abuse, or sabotaging success by suddenly quitting a good job or ending a positive relationship
6. Suicidal threats or behavior or self-injury, often in response to fear of separation or rejection
7. Wide mood swings lasting from a few hours to a few days, which can include intense happiness, irritability, shame or anxiety
8. Ongoing feelings of emptiness
9. Inappropriate, intense anger, such as frequently losing your temper, being sarcastic or bitter, or having physical fights
People tend to develop BPD if they have experienced severe trauma and neglect as a child, which Satoko clearly has. She grew up in such an abusive family, and with the disappearance of her brother, she lost the one source of stability in her life - it's really no wonder that she has severe attachment issues with Rika and will choose a life of seemingly endless looping and repeatedly fucking everyone over just to have Rika stay by her side... I honestly felt so sad learning that people hated Satoko for this because I can really empathize with her behavior and she's just that desperate to stay with the person who is most important to her...
I'm not saying that her behavior is okay in any way, because her toxic attachment to Rika has caused so much suffering for everyone, including herself, and it's not fair for her to prioritize her own selfish desire over the safety and wellbeing of everyone. But, while I can see why others can find her clingy, annoying, and useless, I can't help but feel so, so sorry for her since I don't she doesn't deserve the hate.
If you had almost nothing in your life but suffering, abuse, and abandonment and you finally find someone (in her case, Rika) who you actually trust to love and care for you unconditionally but then years later that person chose some fake ass prep school bitches over you who will LITERALLY do anything for her, of course you'd also feel so overwhelmingly sad and resentful, hoping that person can just realize how much you care about them and change their mind and stay with you.
It's so toxic, trust me -- I know, but it really, really hurts so much to love and care for someone so deeply only for them to abandon you (and in Satoko's case, over and over and over...) At the start of her looping, she was mostly just killing herself to reset the timeline (except for that one chandelier scene) so even when Rika has hurt her so much, she still chooses to hurt herself and keep Rika unscathed. I really don't think she's a bad person at all, just so desperate to not be abandoned and I honestly can't blame her for any of the shitty things she does.
(on the other hand, fuck Rika for choosing those fake hive-mind sheep bitches she just met who only know how to follow the herd over her best friend since childhood whom she literally weathered orphanage with for YEARS.
I get that she suffered through a lot too, but ostracizing your best friend like that is just too heartless and cruel, especially since she KNOWS that Satoko has attachment issues. I honestly starting hating Rika after learned about what happened at St. Lucia, and I can't believe how so many people give her a pass for being such a shit friend... She was largely just looping to save herself anyway so I really don't even feel bad for her anymore. Even episode 16, like, fuck you Rika, you don't have a heart anyways so what's the problem with losing some intestines. She only ever pities herself and doesn't even take a moment to think about how Satoko might feel because of her own selfish choices... Meanwhile Satoko willing CHOSE to relive all the loops of suffering Rika lived through to learn more about her friend and what she's been through, so honestly Rika can't even whine about it anymore since she doesn't even remember most of it while Satoko has been through all of it AND remembers the suffering of every timeline.
This might be a hot take, but if Rika weren't such a shitty friend to begin with, Satoko would have never flipped the fuck out.)
If anyone has actually read all of this, tysm ;; I just wanted to get these feelings out there since none of my friends have watched Gou yet and I need to rant about it lmao. Hope you have a good day ^^

People after watching Gou
o.o
Deku_Mavi said: Well it's pretty obvious after watching Gou and Sotsu now. She's basically the antagonist/villian of the series now
