The Melancholy of Haruhi (MH) did not begin the trend of "school club" anime, but it did accelerate the genre over the last decade. The two shows noticeably parallel one another in that both feature male leads that frequently monologue. Kyon (MH) and Hachiman (SNAFU) both provide cynical narratives and analyses of events and characters throughout their respective series.
