On the surface Ano Hana and Shinigami no Ballad don't have much in common, as Ano Hana has a set cast of young people and Shinigami has a varied cast that changes every episode, as well as a big different in quality of art and music in Ano Hana's favour.
However, both stories deal primarily with accepting death and overcoming loss.
Momo and Menma are both young girls who linger in-between the earth and afterlife in order to guide the living. Ultimately both series handle the idea of loss and moving on with sensitivity and a high amount of emotional drama, focusing especially on adolescents.
