Both deal with a very realistic, destroyed Japan where everyone is in a massive state of panic. Both have drama, although in Highschool of the Dead it's a lot more action than anything else.

Both of these anime revolve around surviving in an apocalyptic situation.
Each anime has a group that is formed after the apocalypse begins and they work together to survive and reach a destination.
Tokyo Magnitude is more dramatic and focuses on a major earthquake, while Highschool of the Dead more action oriented focusing on a zombie apocalypse.

Different type of shows, one is zombie apocalypse, the other earthquake related. Both have characters that search for families and loved ones and deal with the aftermath of the disaster and the break-up of society.
Break-up of society and the struggle to survive is greatly portrayed in both anime.
