Sidonia no Kishi is a poor man's Blue Gender. While Sidonia no Kishi has superiour animation, Blue Gender eclipses Sidonia no Kishi in all other aspects regarding visual narrative.

Both share a similar atmosphere and post-apocalyptic setting. In both series aliens have almost destroyed humanity and the rest of the human race has to fight for survival. Blue Gender takes place mostly on the ruined Earth, while Sidonia takes place entirely in space. Both series use a form of mech as weapons against the alien forces.
Both futuristic post apocalyptic sci-fi that explore the human condition in survival oriented situations.
Blue Gender is set on a post apocalyptic planet and is very compelling.
Knights of Sidonia, I -think- is a Netflix original with unique animation and takes place primarily in space aboard a large colony vessel. The Sidonia no Kishi manga is finished and very good too.
