Both are the kind of thing you'd show to someone who isn't really into anime. You've got a kind of dark post-apocalyptic setting (though the mood is decidedly different throughout) with healthy doses of blood and violence. Both have beautiful art and animation with similar art direction and character design. Not only do these two works appeal to a western audience, but they are clearly directly aiming for that worldwide market in the best kind of way.
