Both takes place in the not too distant future and both have a story that makes you actually believe that such a future is not too far fetched. Both have a solid story that makes you think about the world the characters live right now and how you can relate to the world now.
Akira and Patlabor 2 offer timely warnings to a society grappling with fragmentation and violence. They foretell the rise of domestic terrorism in Japan, which tragically materialized with the Aum Shinrikyo's weaponization and the infamous 1995 Tokyo subway attack. So much so, when this was pointed out to Oshii, he expressed relief that his film had been released prior to the attack.
