Both main characters are thrown into a battle involving the supernatural, and must fight in order to protect innocent people who are inevitably caught up in the conflict. Both have to deal with moral dilemmas of what is right and wrong, how far should one go to protect strangers, and the purpose to fight. In both anime other characters challenge the MC's way of thinking, as every character attempts to progress his or her agenda by killing his or her enemies.

Although these shows are of different genre, (horror and fantasy), both share striking similarities.
- The two main characters are unwillingly dragged into a war of survival against servants/parasytes
- The ideals and characteristics of the duos are similar. Shirou and Shinichi have a firm belief in not harming or killing innocent people and are weak without their parasyte/servant. Saber and Migi are solely focused on their goal which requires them to protect their master/host at all cost although they see them as just a tool for achieving their goal.
- Both shows revolve around a school setting and its students are in some way affected
