Girls who have some sort of power that they use against an other-worldly enemy. Both shows have dark undertones, female protagonists who's goal in life is to help others, mecha/mecha-like devices, and sci fi mixed with slice of life comedy. Symphogear is focused on singing in suits that grant them powers while Rinne is focused on piloting mechas.

Both series have an MC who is thrust into a combat role due to an event in their past that allowed them to take upon the position (using a Gear for Hibiki and piloting a Vox for Midori), and focus on their relationships with their allies as they now fight to protect Earth. The Gear designs and pilot suits have somewhat similar designs as well.
