The guy was useless since the very beginning and just served as fodder for his his sister-in-law. Were we meant to have felt sorry for him? Or was he meant to be comic relief? There was already had a huge cast for Shiki and the times Masao had entered the picture(which was several) could have been better used with other characters. There was just too many crucial people that felt left out at the very end, but they made sure Masao had some air-time....like what gives?

He was definitely meant to be comic relief, not to mention that every village has to have a village idiot. He definitely fit that bill.

iirc, he was used to show the viewers the process of dying and rising as an okiagari.
he's not completely useless, and even though he was a douche throughout the series, what little we were shown of his re-death was sad.

He was definitely just the comic relief in the series. I recently watched an AMV parody for christmas 2010, and Masao had his own skit in it with the Mr. Grinch song. xD

For added variety. The novel and manga have thousands of named characters, i.e. all of the people in the town were each given names.

He was the best character in the whole show. Deal with it.

Actually, both the light novel and manga were inconsistent because of the sheer number of named characters. The population of the town fluctuates while other people disappear (didn't die, didn't leave the town, didn't go into hiding, just simply disappeared lol).

The thing is, Shiki wasn't as much as story about a small cast. It was a story about a town. You could argue that Toshio, Natsuno etc were the main characters, but there have been plenty of times they were absent.

So yea, Masao was just there to fulfill the role of town freak, I mean every town/city has one.

Point? Why the hell would there have to be one?

Masao was most certainly one of the more memorable characters of the show( most likely one of the most popular ones as well ), wether you like him or not is totally up to personal preference.
Whenever you correct someone's grammar just remember that nobody likes you.

its not the matter of whether I liked him or not but more to do with what was his part in the series apart from being the village idiot....if Shiki had been a comedy then I could understand but it isn't....I mean people like Nao or Masao's sister-in-law had more meaningful parts and yet they were hardly shown....I was hoping anyone who may have read well into the novel may be able to shed some light over him

i always thought he was there to destory the stereotype of vampires only being comprised of "the beautiful strong people of the night"

wasn't that seen throughout the whole show? Though Masao definitely kills that stereotype (or finishes it off).

There may be some inaccuracy with my memory of this show, but wasn't Masao one of the few Shiki who resisted attacking people? The only blood I remember him drinking was from a glass. Might not add too much to his character but at least it's more than just comic relief. He provided an alternate to the masses of Shiki who went around killing people.
