My friend said once "if you want to watch that anime you must watch more anime so you can understand humor culture. So you get more joy while watching it." So i didnt watch it since back then. Should i still watch more anime or it doesnt matter its easy to get humors so just watch 200eps.

Your friend isn't wrong, It would be more enjoyable if u watched more anime so u get the references, but it isn't like u won't still understand 60% of the jokes
If you've seen Jojo, Dragonball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, HxH ,and some ghibli films you should be fine with 70% of the references.

That's some solid advice. I dropped Gintama on my first try after 15 episodes and came back to it two years and roughly 150 other shows later. Now it's on my shortlist for best anime of all time. Don't worry about the references, sometimes they're even explained in the sub, if I recall correctly.

Well... there are issues to that. Watching more anime would definitely help in enjoying Gintama more and knowing of the references. The problem being a.) you might just watch literal hundreds of episodes even though in reality some of the references doesn't go that deep to begin with, and b.)Gintama also references many. other media, specifically Japanese media. There are also many jokes that are only comprehensible in the Japanese context and language. Watching more anime won't help that. I'd actually argue that Gintama is still hilarious even if you don't get the references (mostly in the later eps). Gintama is just absurd like that. I would recommend though to consume a handful of anime just to get the feel of what to expect. Look at me, I first watched Gintama when I was 9 and I loved it (granted it was already at thr stage where the writers mastered writing the jokes so makes sense. The first 50-100 episodes are generally just more of Gintama trying to find a style it could use).

You don't really need to watch a lot of anime, just the popular ones to understand most of the jokes. You don't need to understand every joke since there are a lot of jokes that mainly only Japanese can understand.

If you want a bit of spoiler for one random Gintama episode

So yeah like I said, no pressure in watching more anime series. Just be a bit patient in getting to know the characters in the first few episodes.

Gintama's comedy is Gag Humor. as long as you like gag Humor, you will find it entertaining. there is some jokes that hard to understand especially the words joke, you won't really get it if you don't speak Japanese. But overall it still funny

Its true that it would be better to watch more anime before Gintama but ig you would be fine if you have watched old popular ones.
Specifically Dragon ball Z, gundam, nge, big 3, hxh, jojo

Your friend isn't correct 100 percent. there are also a lot of references that have nothing to do with anime, like their dramas and actors' personal lives or tv shows.

Your friend has a point, for example two episodes legit revolve around kuroko’s basketball, so if you haven’t watched it you might not find some references funny. Either way i think the subs explain stuff to some extent so it doesn’t matter too much and is still enjoyable regardless. Up to you really :)

Yes, gintama has plenty of references from other animes, mostly shonen like HxH, Bleach, Dragon Ball etc. But even if you watch the animes after gintama, you can still search for certain anime references in gintama on youtube, and it's really funny to watch in retrospective. I watched bleach after gintama, and when I saw all bleach references in a youtube video it was so funny that I had missed up so many of them. But anyways, gintama has plenty of more humor to offer besides references so just watch it and have a blast because it is amazing from start to finish!

You can try to watch some episodes to see if you get the jokes and knowing the reference. It is mostly playing jokes from the same manga magazine, which is jump. Moreover, it is also making fun of some movies, Japanese celebrities and some news that happened in Japan.

For instance, it some episodes, it makes fun of one of the popular Hollywood films, which is quite funny.
