From time to time people notice a few members spamming posting Japanese words one after another. To most it seems completely random but it really is not. We are playing a Japanese word play game called Shiritori, which literally means "taking the bottom" as the Japanese language is traditionally written in vertical columns, from the top down.

Basic Rules

1. Two or more people take turns to play.
2. Only nouns are permitted.
3. A player who plays a word ending in the mora N (ん) loses the game, as no Japanese word begins with that character.

4. Words may not be repeated.
5. Phrases connected by no (の) are permitted, but only in those cases where the phrase is sufficiently fossilized to be considered a "word".

Example: sakura (さくら)-> rajio (ラジオ)-> onigiri (おにぎり)-> risu (りす)-> sumou (すもう) -> udon (うどん)
The player who used the word udon lost this game.

There are more advanced rules but we just play basic rules.

We typically just write the words in romaji but if you need to reference a hiragana or katakana chart here they are:

-Hiragana - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana
-Katakana - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana

Kanji is also acceptable but it might be harder for some people to play along so we don't use it.
