Anime vs manga comparison

I've been thinking about giving the Spirit of Wonder ova's a try for months. However, I can't quite seem to figure out if I should read the manga first or watch the anime. To users who have done either and fortunately both, could you tell me how the anime compares with the manga?

For the sake of clarity: here's what I'm comparing - the manga Spirit of Wonder and the ova's Spirit of Wonder: China-san no Yuutsu (1992), Shounen Kagaku Club (2001) and China-san Tanpenshuu
