◤ YU'S PAPER DATE◢
Cʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ 1: Wᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴛᴏ Aǫᴏᴜʀs Uɴɪᴠᴇʀsɪᴛʏ

A new campus.
A fresh start.
Bright eyes all around.
Yutaro took a deep, long inhale of the fresh autumn air as he stood before the administrative building of his university campus. He couldn’t wait for what university life had in store for him! High school was mostly a drag, filled with questionable friendships and a lack of romantic spark. There was no elaborate “high school debut” for him then, but he was certain that his “university debut” would be fantastic. He would make sure of it, no matter the costs.
First step was for him to find his orientation group. He stared at the location listed in his student email and wandered around for a while. Only losers used maps.... But perhaps he needed one. While wandering aimlessly with his eyes darting from one sign to another, a woman stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey freshman, are you lost?” She smiled kindly at him, her brown hair was blowing gently in the wind. Yutaro wasn’t expecting his first conversation with a lady at school to be so soon. He coughed roughly twice to clear his throat, feeling sheepish to admit that he really was lost. Before he could answer her, she craned her head over his phone screen to see his orientation location.
“Let me walk you there. It’s close by!” She offered cheerily in a sing-song sort of manner. Yu wondered if she was a vocal major, or at least in the performing arts. She walked with a confidence that only a seasoned performer would have, and her makeup was on fleek too. In the end, he was too shy to ask. What right did a freshman have to knowing anything about a kind senpai like her? She pressed on, dragging him to their destination by pulling him gently by the sleeve as she made lighthearted conversation. Sometimes her questions would pass by so quickly she’d be onto the next before Yu even had a chance to respond.
“Computer science students meet here. Looks like your nerd crew has already begun to gather.” She joked, slapping him lightly on the shoulder. “I’m just kidding.” She clarified with a wink. Yu felt his knees weakening.
“Alright I’ll see you around. Bye!” She left without ever having introduced her name. Would they really ever see each other again? Could fate possibly make their paths cross once more? Now that he was alone he shuffled awkwardly towards the group of guys gathered around a makeshift flag. They all looked as confused and timid as he did, all except for one guy. He stood out from the rest with his magnificent orange hair that was messy but also not... at the same time. He exuded his own unique aura of confidence, not like any computer science student Yu could imagine, and certainly not that of a first year.
It didn’t take long to know exactly who this guy was. Upon seeing Yu inch closer and closer to the computer science pack, the ring leader with the flashy orange hair almost lunged toward him. Yu froze in shock.
“Hey new friend, welcome to orientation. I’m one of your orientation captains. Name’s Sylvain.” He introduced with a smirk so charismatic even Yu had to admit he was a cut above the rest. An obvious lady killer. AKA.... GOALS.
“Nice to meet you, my name’s Yutaro. Oh--just call me Yu.” He introduced rather clumsily.
“Well, Yu, I think we’re gonna get along perfectly.” Sylvain declared.
“Why do you think that?”
“I saw you make your grand entrance with a fine lady in tow. Today’s not even the first day of classes and you’re already reeling the ladies in. I like the way you work.” He recalled his interpretation of the senpai who helped Yu find his way.
“I’m sorry? I don’t even know her name…” Yu retorted. He was no flirt, even if he secretly wished he was. He wasn’t about to take credit for what wasn’t due to him. He remembered his younger years when girls would flock to him rather naturally, and he didn’t think much of it at that tender age. And being as young as he was at the time, he didn’t know how to shoot his shots. Now gone were those days.
“You like to play the mysterious man, I see. That’s very sly of you. You’re good…. Too good. I better step up my game; you’re a formidable foe.” Sylvain remarked half jokingly. His arm was around Yu’s shoulders as they chatted as if they’d been bros for decades rather than two strangers brought together under a misunderstanding.
“Anyway, we’re starting the campus tour soon. Stick around and I’ll be sure to show you all the fun 'hot spots.'” He said in almost a whisper in Yu’s ear, sending a shiver down his spine. Nothing about the way he said that sounded like good news, and yet, his charisma piqued enough of Yu’s interest to want to hear more. Still, what was up with this guy? Sylvain waltzed back to the front of the herd and reintroduced himself as he brushed his bangs back with his hand. Dammit, the bangs are the first thing that ladies will see. He quickly brushed his fingers through his hair to smooth out the stray cowlick that seemed unfazed by his attempt. If this were a class of women instead of computer science nerds Yu was certain they’d be swooning and fighting for Sylvain’s number… Although, it wouldn’t be long until Yu’s thoughts were proven correct.
As their small group toured the campus, girls were sneaking photographs of Sylvain left and right. Occasionally if he made eye contact with one inadvertently he’d shoot them some finger guns or throw hearts. Even the faculty staff would wave at him, and Yu was pretty sure he even saw a professor wink at him. No surprises there…
After a while, the spotlight and fame that Sylvain brought to their orientation group died down and his mind wandered… back to that kind senpai he’d met earlier this morning. Where was she now? What was she doing? And the most important question of all; would they ever meet again? Their group broke for a lunch break and Yu decided to wander toward the fine arts buildings. Sylvain noticed him stray but decided to give him that freedom, knowing exactly who Yu was looking for. In all honesty, Sylvain wasn’t sure of that lady’s name either. He’s graced with so many women every morning he would be a god if he could remember all of them by face and name. The secret to getting out of those tough spots was using the generic “babe” or “cutie.” Worked like a charm every time. Sylvain kept a mental record of that tip; he would give it to his new favourite kouhai, Yu in a bit. Sylvain swore that by the end of first semester he would transform Yu into the greatest lady-killer known to Aqours University! Second only to Sylvain himself, of course.
So naturally, as a responsible senpai, Sylvain trailed Yu from the shadows, making sure Yu had no idea he was being followed. They were now near the school theatre, and Yu was leisurely passing practice rooms, occasionally sticking his head closer to the doors to try and discern the senpai’s voice from what he could remember. At the next door, he was startled by the music recording suddenly stopping, and a tall blonde man with a large build stomp out of the practice room, brushing harshly against Yu’s shoulder as he walked off. Behind him came a student Yu was all too familiar with. Unfortunately.
What the hell was Luna doing here at Aqours University?
“Yu-chan! I knew I’d bump into you soon!” She beamed in her always cheery sort of fashion. Yu forgot how bubbly this ditzy senpai was. After Shadow and Luna had graduated from Kado High, he had one final year of freedom from the craziness they brought with them. He thought he did his research and chose a university that the two of them definitely would not have gone to. Were his calculations wrong? What was Luna doing here?
“Are you stalking me or something?” He asked, almost believing it as he said it out loud.
“Don’t be foolish. I enrolled here first, if anything you’re stalking me. But that’s besides the point. Aren’t you in computer science? Are you lost?” Luna glanced around-no computers in sight. He was probably lost.
“Actually I’m not! I was just looking for someone!” He blurted out, annoyed that everyone seemed to think he had no sense of direction. Sure, maybe it was to some degree true, but he still had his pride to hold onto.
“Oh, who? I might be able to help you.”
“I doubt it.”
“Try me.”
“She’s a senpai with beautiful brown hair and a voice like an angel.” Yu described, immediately regretting his honesty afterwards. He didn’t trust Luna in high school, he probably shouldn’t trust her in university either. But it was too late.
“Wow, you’re really aiming high, aren’t you? It sounds like you’re looking for Dorothea, the gem of the fine arts department. She’s a vocal major and her specialty is opera but I’ve heard her sing other genres and she’s good.” Luna began to share everything she knew about Dorothea. Apparently they’d been friends since last year. Yu couldn’t imagine how someone as pristine and ladylike as Dorothea could be friends with… Luna the aloof fluffball. At least now he had her name. He was one step closer to finding her.
“What are you doing here anyway? There’s no way you’re in fine arts. Also, why were you alone in a practice room with that big blonde guy?” It was Yu’s turn to fire questions.
Without missing a beat, Luna replied, “Oh, Dimitri? I had to ask him a favour and Professor Byleth told me that I’d find him in the practice room. I sort of walked in on him doing something embarrassing… so he got annoyed and stormed off. I was just trying to get a strand of his hair for Shadow…” Luna’s eyes were downcast as she thought about how she failed her one mission Shadow had tasked her with. What Shadow wanted his strand of hair for, no one but Shadow knew. Luna only agreed to help her because she knew, from her many years of friendship with Shadow, that this Dimitri person was special. She wanted to work her cupid magic. The most obvious sign was that Dimitri had an eyepatch, and Shadow was weak for eyepatches. If she could just get within two feet of Dimitri herself, Shadow would probably whisper sweet nothings into his dear eyepatch. It was plain to Luna that both Shadow and Dimitri had a darkness that neither wanted to open up about, wanted to hide from the world. It was sort of edgy, and Luna was all for shipping that.
“So… Shadow has a crush on big blonde emo man?” Yu asked to clarify after listening to Luna’s monologue that she had accidentally voiced out loud.
“I guess yeah you could say it like that.”
“Fascinating… Very fascinating…” Yu began rubbing his chin, imagining what sort of blackmail he could use to get back at Shadow for the years of trauma she bestowed on him in Kado High School.
“So do you want me to help you find Dorothea?” Luna offered. Yu was surprised by her willingness, but she had given him dirt on Shadow, so he had no reason to doubt her at this point. He agreed, and followed her through the winding hallways of the fine arts building. Not knowing that Sylvain was still lurking behind. Just as Luna approached Dorothea’s favourite practice room, the one with the white grand piano, Yu stopped short and ran off in the other direction.
“Yu-chan, where are you going?” Luna called out after him.
“I just saw Dorothea walk by! I’ll catch you later!” He yelled back and waved. Within seconds he was out of sight, leaving Luna slightly confused at the practice room’s door. Luna blinked twice and then opened the door and was greeted warmly by Dorothea who had just finished her vocal warmups and was sipping on her water bottle.
“Hey, Dorothea… do you have a doppleganger at this school?” Luna asked confusedly. It felt like a dumb question because how could anyone attempt to match Dorothea’s beauty? But if there was no one else like Dorothea, who did Yu-chan see?
Yu was sprinting so fast that Sylvain was breaking a sweat while following him. The girl Yu saw was straight ahead though her back was turned. Yu had been calling out her name for the last minute or so but to no avail. She wasn’t turning around. When Yu got close enough to grab her shoulder, he said her name one last time and she turned with a shocked expression.
“I finally found you, Dorothea. I never got to introduce myself, and uh, so… Hey my name is Yutaro--ah, just call me Yu, and uhm… if you’re free could we grab a coffee? I mean, like, not right now but maybe later? Only if you’re free of course! Crap, I’m sorry I’m such a mess.” He never fumbled so hard to get his sentences out. Sylvain was peeking from behind a corner and wanted to facepalm. This kouhai needed more training, that’s for sure. He was already making plans to take Yu out to a bar this weekend for some hands-on practice. Literal hands-on practice. Sylvain smirked while thinking about it.
“Oh, honey, that’s so sweet of you! But I wonder if you meant that precious proposal for another maiden? Dorothea should be in practice room 1C.” She replied politely, pushing some of her brown bobbed hair behind her ears.
“You’re not Dorothea? Then, what’s your name?” Yu was confused. Luna gave him the wrong name, but that shouldn’t matter. He just needed to find her right name and then ask her out for coffee again after, right? She’s so kind she would forgive such a blunder.
“My students call me Professor Manuela. Dorothea is my pupil; I knew her parents from an opera house we used to frequent.” Manuela reminisced with a warm smile.
Yu’s brain blanked.
Did she just say professor?
He was thirsting after a professor?
“You’ll have to excuse me, I have to finalize my syllabus with my teaching assistants.” She excused herself while Yu was still too shocked to speak. It was at that moment that Sylvain made his appearance.
“What happened there, dude?” Sylvain asked, arm over Yu’s shoulder once again.
“I’m not sure? The lady that brought me to orientation turned out to be a vocal professor…” Yu muttered, embarrassed. Sylvain hollered out and then punched Yu in the arm.
“So what if she’s a Christmas Cake? No judgement here, man!”
Yu glared at Sylvain and Sylvain immediately backed off. He wasn’t joking about being willing to date a Christmas Cake. He didn’t discriminate when it came to women, but clearly Yu’s standards and expectations deviated a little. Or a lot. Sylvain would take his time getting to know Yu’s preferences. The fastest way to figure it out though, was to go pick up some chicks together on campus.
“Yutaro, dude, do you need a hug, bro? C’mon dude let’s go flirt with some girls dude cheer up!” He began pulling Yu as he walked, away from fine arts and back to the computer science buildings. They’d pass by nursing and education on the way. He could probably take his pick from among them? He seemed defeated and uninterested.
“Alright since you’re sulking and it’s not even the first day of school, I’mma let you in on a secret, alright? I’ve been developing something as a side project that’s going to change the landscape of dating, especially dating on campus. I got ideas for it by watching Love Live and playing Crush Crush. I call this dating app, ‘Living a life of love.’ Essentially it starts off as a dating simulator where you learn a lot of wicked pickup lines and puns, because girls are weak for that, and when you’ve scored all the girls-based off the 9 Aqours members-from the simulator portion, it’ll match you to a girl in your vicinity for you to practice what you just learned in real life! On a real girl! It’s foolproof!”
“This sounds like a convoluted mess.” Yu replied after giving it some thought. He didn’t want to admit that he too was a fan of both Love Live and Crush Crush…
“Doesn’t it? That’s why we need beta-testers. You interested?” Sylvain said with a wink. He was still too charismatic for Yu to refuse.
“Alright, fine. I’m in.”
