Can this be a thing? I'm noticing several shows that should be marked harem or ecchi recently that aren't.

Also, can we have a separate incest tag? No joke, I'm getting annoyed with getting sucked into shows only to get smacked in the face with totally unexpected incest like three episodes in. Looking at you, selector infected wixoss. >_<

Sometimes neither the creator of the entry nor the mod who approves it has experience of the series in question at the time the entry is added, which is usually the reason for inaccuracies.

If you know of series that have genres they shouldn't or that should have genres that they don't then you can post in this thread: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=30866 (edit: the manga equivalent is here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=60876). Please be absolutely sure that such a genre is definitely justified before requesting it, though (fanservice does not make a series ecchi, for instance).

As for incest, actual incest is really rather rare in anime, although probably no more so than some of the other things we have genres for. Strong affection or bonds between siblings is not incest, no matter how much some people would like to pretend that it is.

Incest should be a genre for sure. Only for stuff like OreImo though.

Probably because the manga adaptation was published in a shounen magazine.

Bear in mind that anime, like visual novels and light novels, do not have "shounen"/"seinen" or "shoujo"/"josei" demographics. Thus when MAL adds these as so-called genres (for things that aren't pornographic or targeted at little kids), they take them from the demographics of the manga, even when the manga is not the original source.

Obviously with Fate/Stay night the original does have a relevant demographic, in that it is an adult game, but given that the anime contains no adult scenes, labelling it as "hentai" would be inappropriate.

The F/SN manga adapts the Fate route. So that would make the DEEN's adaptation a shounen and not the ufotable adaptation. F/SN is three stories

With regards to OP, he is right. The tags are just too vague. There's not even a cyberpunk tag. Of course, people should be careful to add a tag that would spoil the series.

Less vagueness in general. When I'm looking for something interesting and in the mood for a certain genre, it isn't helpful that whatever genre tag I'm looking for is spammed all across the site, nor does it help when tags aren't updated after shows are over to reflect what the show ended up being up being about versus what the original expectation of it was.

I always thought the genres were determined by what people tag it as? So its automatic by concensus rather than put in manually, right?

No, genres never were that way. It is determined by what genres you select when you add an anime to the DB: http://myanimelist.net/panel.php?go=anime_series&do=add and what the mods later edit in
Tags, however, were - before the scripts were disabled. Here're the threads when the tag system was implemented:
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1450
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=12621
And disabled:
