-Do not screenshot or copy/paste your Role PM.
-Do not make contact with players outside this thread/Mafia Club about the game, this is cheating and can lead to a permanent ban from the club.
-Do not post anything after your death until the games end.
-Mafia Society Rules and Guidelines apply here, if these are violated, you will be removed from the game.
-Site and Forum Guidelines apply here. If these are violated, they will be dealt with accordingly by a MAL moderator.
Game Set-Up
-The game consists of 2 factions: The town and the mafia.
-There are 2 phases, the day and night. Each lasting 24 hours.
-Players are aligned to a faction randomly and will be sent a PM holding their role for the game.
-The mafia have a club for them to discuss strategy in.
-All factions have win conditions that the players must try to fulfill:
Town Win Condition: You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive. Mafia Win Condition: You win if at least one member of your group is alive and all other players are dead (or if nothing can prevent the same).
Lynching
-Lynching will take place in the day phase. Players will vote on who they want to get lynched.
-The person with the most votes gets lynched, the player along with their alignment and role will be released at the start of the new night phase.
-If the votes are tied between 2+ players, there will be no lynch.
-Votes can be changed and removed during the day phase.
-To vote post in bold to make it clear to the hosts, example:
Example said: Vote: Chione
Inactivity
If any player does not post at least 3 posts relevant to the game every day phase, then a replacement will be found and if no replacements are available, you will be modkilled at the end of the next night phase to give the host time to find a replacement.
Confirmed Roles
Vanilla Townies x5: You have no abilities, your strength is your vote and intellect.
Mafia Goon: -You share a Private Topic with your fellow scum..
-You have a factional night-kill meaning that each night one of you may night-kill a player.
Additional Roles
These roles will be added to the confirmed roles, to make the complete roles list.
One of the rows or columns will be randomly chosen. The players will not be told which row or column was chosen.
Example said: Row 2 is chosen.
New Set up = Confirmed Roles + Row 2 Roles
5x Vanilla townies, 1x Mafia Goon, 1x Mafia Roleblocker, 1x Town Cop, 1x Town Doctor
The Mentor: The mentor is an experienced player in the game that is used for support for the players and a person to ask questions to. But, the mentor also plays the game to also achieve their goal to win. The mentor for this game will be coromandel.
Joining Requirements: To cannot join if you have played more than 5 games. This is a beginners game, so only players with less than or equal to 5 games experience can join.
If these were the final votes then GammaY would be lynched, and we'd find out whether he's a townie or mafia.
Let's assume GammaY is mafia:
The mafia's goal is to eliminate the townies. So, when a mafia player is about to be lynched, his mafia partner(s) will often try to save their buddy. By trying to persuade people to vote for someone else. Or simply by voting for another player who has a lot of votes on them.
Sometimes mafia players will do the opposite though, just to avoid being caught by someone who might be analyzing the votes afterwards. Meaning, some players will not try to save their partner, or may even vote for their partner themselves! To appear innocent to the rest of the players. This is called "bussing".
Now - if both is possible, then why are we analyzing the votes, and is this "analysis" even going to help us?
It is, but you cannot find mafia *just* by looking at the votes. But it does help to narrow down suspects.
What I would do first after such a lynch, would be to pressure the people on the opposing train (in this case, that'd be alxh94, Exhalant and Kunii who voted for magical).
To see what their motivation behind their votes was.
Not voting: CherryDan, deepinthelair, GammaY, thereapersedge
^ I'm slightly scum-reading Luuhser, Exhalant and Kunii because they all joined magical's train. When you're mafia and your partner is being voted for, it is tempting to vote for someone else. It is possible one of them is mafia, and tried to shift the votes to someone else so he is not lynched.
^ Based on their votes, I'm town-reading CherryDan, magicalofmagic and deepinthelair, because they put more pressure on GammaY.
Mafia does sometimes vote for each other during day 1, but they usually don't do it if their partner already has votes on them.
^
One thing I'd like to point out here, is, that GammaY could have voted for magicalofmagic instead - she actually had 1 vote more than me at that time. You have to wonder why he chose to vote for me instead. It is possible that he couldn't vote for her, because she's also mafia.
His vote tied the votes between 3 players, whereas if he would have voted for magical, she would have been in the lead with the votes.
Conclusion
Based on the D1 votes, I'd say that CherryDan and deepinthelair are probably townies.
The reapersedge is hard to read for me at the moment, I'd say he is neutral for now.
The same goes for Magicalofmagic. She voted for GammaY twice - once in the middle of the game, and then at the end. Which makes me town-read her.
But at the same time, I'm wondering why GammaY didn't vote for her to save himself at the end of the day.
I suspect Luuhser, Exhalant and Kunii the most, based on how they voted for magicalofmagic.
Probably townies

These ^ are my reads, meaning my organized thoughts on all players based on what happened during day 1.
You can share your own reads with everyone if you like.
+Let's discuss who could be the remaining mafia member.
The mafia's goal is to eliminate the townies. So, when a mafia player is about to be lynched, his mafia partner(s) will often try to save their buddy. By trying to persuade people to vote for someone else. Or simply by voting for another player who has a lot of votes on them.

Meaning, some players will not try to save their partner, or may even vote for their partner themselves! To appear innocent to the rest of the players. This is called "bussing".
GammaY said: Because I can randomly vote you, coromandel. xD
Except your vote on me is no longer random. ;)
First of all, you just explained how you're voting for me because town "doesn't need a mentor".
And secondly, I'm the one who started the train on you. You're now voting me back - which is called an OMGUS vote (="Oh my god, you suck (for voting for me)!".
Another term I should probably mention is mass-claiming.
A mass-claim is when every single player claims their role.
Mass-claims are often suggested by someone when the game is about to end, usually as a last attempt to find out who is mafia.
If you are scum (= anti-town), it is a good idea to think of a believable fake-claim in advance, in case someone will call for a mass-claim later.
When people are doubting your claim, it's best to reveal not only your role, but also your actions. (This only applies if you're a power role, obviously)
Telling people how you used your abilities - who you were targetting at night and why - will make your claim sound more credible.
And the last term regarding claims (that I can think of ^^) is counter-claim.
It is a claim that contradicts someone else's claim.
Example: There's only 1 Town Tracker in the game, and a mafia player fake-claims that role. Later, the real Town Tracker speaks up and counters their claim.
How do you keep track of the players/roles? (example)
coromandel said: 6 slots have been confirmed by the host. We know that this game has 5 Vanilla Townies and 1 Goon (who is now dead).
There are 3 additional roles. One of these rows has been randomly chosen at game start:
Town Jailkeeper + Vanilla Townie + Mafia Goon
Mafia Roleblocker + Town Cop + Town Doctor
1-shot Bulletproof Townie + Mafia Goon + Town Tracker
Town Jailkeeper + Mafia Roleblocker + 1-shot Bulletproof Townie
Vanilla Townie + Town Cop + Mafia Goon
Mafia Goon + Town Doctor + Town Tracker
So the other mafia member can only be a Goon or a Roleblocker.
This is how the setup should look like:
Vanilla Townie
Vanilla Townie
Vanilla Townie
Vanilla Townie
Vanilla Townie
Mafia Goon [GammaY]
Mafia Goon or Mafia Roleblocker
? (Townie)
? (Townie)
Players [mafia left: 1]
coromandel
magicalofmagic
alxh94
Exhalant
CherryDan
thereapersedge
GammaY [Mafia Goon]
deepinthelair
Kunii
^ It is good to have an overview like this, so you know exactly how many bad guys are left.
I always try to keep track of this - especially in larger games.
The mafia may show a lack of interest in voting, unless they - or their partners - are being voted for themselves. Townies will try to scumhunt, but the mafia often focuses on avoiding being lynched instead.
The mafia tends not to vote for each other. They'll try to get other players lynched - their goal is to eliminate the town faction after all.
So when a mafia player is lynched, you'll often find the mafia on opposing lynch trains, because they tried to save their partner from being lynched.
Their partners may do the opposite and hop on the lynch train instead.
This is usually done when the mafia feels that their partner cannot be saved anymore. To confuse the townies into thinking they don't belong to the same faction, and to appear innocent.
When two mafia players are both in danger of being lynched, it is also likely that they are voting for each other, or that one of them will "sacrifice" themselves for the other one.
Once a mafia member has been lynched, it's a good idea to take a closer look at:
- Players who were on opposing lynch trains. Especially those, who joined opposing trains *after* a mafia player had at least 1 vote on them.
- Players who joined the mafia's lynch train quite late (they could have been bussing their partner)
[ 2 ] Post Analysis
Vote Analysis and Post Analysis go hand in hand. It is important to look both at the votes and the motives behind people's actions.
To successfully find a mafia member by looking at people's posts, you should try to read between the lines, and figure out what their motives are.
From a townie's perspectve
Their goal is to find the mafia players, or else they lose.
While some of them have abilities (= power roles), Vanilla Townies only have one power: Their vote. Meaning that voting is the only way for them to achieve their win condition.
That is why townies (in general) appear more active when it comes to scumhunting during the day.
From the mafia's perspective
Their goal is to eliminate the townies, and their #1 fear is to be suspected and lynched.
Due to this fear, they will try to appear innocent, and will often seem overly cautious and "neutral". (They will also have the investigative town roles in mind, and a neutral behavior will help them avoid being targeted by those.)
In general, they will not be as motivated as the townies, when it comes to scumhunting. Because they will have more of a "survival" mindset during the day, versus the "scumhunting" mindset that townies usually have.
^ These are very basic patterns - I'm not saying that each townie or mafia player will appear just like I described it here. But what you should try to understand is that these two factions (townies and mafia) have different motives, which influence their behavior.
[ 3 ] Night Kill Analysis
This method is not as foolproof as the other ones, but I'll mention it anyway.
NKA means, to take a look at who the mafia has killed at night, and then deduce who is mafia based on their chosen target. [or more general: deducing why they picked their target]
(If you have a power role that can influence the mafia's kill - like a Doctor or Jailkeeper - you may find this part helpful as well.)
How the mafia picks their target
The mafia has to choose a target to kill each night, and the one thing they'll always try to do is: Pick a target that will bring them closer to victory.
But there are still various different strategies behind choosing who to kill.
Killing someone that seems like a threat
The motive behind killing someone, is often to get rid of a certain player due to fear of being caught by them.
This includes:
Players that the mafia perceives as very strong, who have a reputation for being good at finding scum.
Players that openly suspect the mafia players in the game thread. (They may feel threatened by someone who seems to "have it all figured out", and may want to get rid of them for that reason.)
Players who (they think) have power roles, especially investigative roles. (They may want to get rid of the Cop, for example.)
Killing someone to frame another player
While the townies will spend the day phases trying to find scum, the mafia players will have their survival in mind. They'll be happy about every single player who seems more suspicious than them. If they're surrounded by "suspicious" town players, it will be easier for them to avoid being lynched.
In order to have the townies suspect each other, they may try to frame someone. They can sometimes achieve this with their night kill.
Example: Let's say it is night 2. I'm a townie and the day before, I mentioned how I suspected Chione and tried to convince the others to lynch her. She wasn't lynched after all, but everyone still remembers how I suspected her. Chione is a townie though, and the mafia may see this as the perfect opportunity to frame her - by killing me.
The next day, some people may start to think that I was killed because Chione is mafia, and perceived me as a threat after all. Even if they don't start voting for her right away, once the "seed of doubt" has been planted, people may start to mistrust her a little.
(The same thing could also work the other way round: If Chione was mafia, she may suggest to kill me to appear innocent. The next day, if someone concludes that "she is mafia, based on the nightkill", she could turn it around by saying that "the mafia was trying to frame her".)
Making sure the kill goes through
Another thing the mafia will probably consider when choosing a target: The town roles that are in play.
They will usually try to eliminate the townies as fast as possible. So if there is a Doctor or Jailkeeper in the game, they may avoid players who could be protected by these roles, to make sure their kill goes through. Instead of picking an obviously innocent player (who may be protected at night), they may choose to kill someone who was not in the spotlight during the day, and who isn't perceived as innocent by the others.
Not being seen, not getting caught
They may also try to avoid being seen at night. One role that the mafia is usually afraid of is the Watcher, someone who can learn who their target was visited by at night. If a Watcher picks the mafia's victim, they will find out the name of the killer. (This role is not part of this game, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.)
Getting rid of "confirmed" players
Players who have claimed their role, and who are confirmed townies - the mafia will not want to keep them alive for too long.
The other townies may start to trust them, and may follow their lead. The mafia on the other hand, will need to manipulate the town into not lynching them, but to lynch each other. To achieve this, they may keep the suspicious, non-confirmed townies alive instead. This ensures that the townies don't trust each other too easily.
[ 4 ] Process of Elimination (PoE)
It is often quite hard to identify who is bad, especially when there's only 1 mafia player left. That player might just be really clever and a good actor.
It is just as important to think of who is bad, as it is to think of who is town! Once you have that figured out, you'll gradually get closer to who's mafia.
You can make a list of all players and add what you know of each of them (claims, for example, and who they've voted for).
Group them into "suspicious", "not suspicious", "neutral".
Just by figuring out who is not suspicious at all (for example by looking at who has lynched a mafia member), it'll be a lot easier to narrow down suspects.
So what kind of plan do we have for day 1, I literally never have any clue on what to do
But for now I'll go with Vote: magicalofmagic
Oh and sorry I won't be around for the start of each phase I finish work like an hour before each phase starts and it takes a while driving through traffic :S

Nice to have you here again. :3
How do you feel about day 1, and voting in general?
Well, I feel that people (myself included) really like to be a bit impulsive and vote randomly. I guess I am kind of learning to just wait, be patient, and observe what other people are saying and analysing.

That's fine. There's more than 1 way to play this game.
Personally, I prefer to just vote for someone from the start and see what happens throughout the day.
I find that voting for people makes them talk more, which is always a good thing. ^^

_________
@alxh94 I am so loving that sig, man.
Vote: magicalofmagic
Is there a reason why you're voting for magical?
Well, not really. There's not enough of a discussion going on for me to vote him/her based off of anything. I just randomly vote users on Day 1. I think that's pretty much the only thing to do on Day 1 if you aren't playing with any familiar faces.
Players not voting (4): (CherryDan, thereapersedge, GammaY, deepinthelair)
Mod Notes: Host will be available again in 8 hours and says good night~ Feel free to send me any questions about your role that you have per PM, I'll answer them once I'm up again >> Time until the phase change <<
Hello everyone again! I'm probably an inexperience mafia player and if I do any mistake, I would kindly be urged by everyone to make myself feel comfortable in this game. By the way, it's pleased to meet everyone here! ^^
Besides, probably, it's obvious that I'm in different time zone and you may not see me around the times where everyone is discussing in this mafia game thread but I will do my best to keep track of time where everyone does and try to hang out until midnight. Once again, I'm in GMT+8. :) (I have curfew) haha, I messed-up with timezone again. xD I'm really sorry.
Lol, I can't believe I have two votes. I should come here an earlier on time. You two are meanie to me. /. I'm being shot through my heart for twice.
Haha am I? Right. For the sake of winning. magicalofmagic
I'm curious if I stay alive until the end. Let's see what will happen after this? We have two players have not voted yet, so, vote one of us wisely. As a beginner on mafia, I must stay here a bit longer and experience new circumstances throughout this mafia game as I can learn new thing and give opinion on every phase changes sooner or later. I'm looking forward until the end. :)
I know the pain. xD This starts at, like, midnight for me.... Vote: Coro
Mentor-san, what do you have to say? I just had the random thought, 'what if we lynched our mentor d1 and we had no more mentor?' and now I have a deep urge to lynch coro whether or not he'sscum. xD
