Kenichi is the protagonist of Sharin no Kuni. Despite being the youngest person to ever become a Special High Class Individual cadet, he has already distinguished himself as a CEO and a combatant in the Southern Country's foreign legion. Often considered slightly unhinged from the latter experience, he has a habit of talking to himself and making jokes other people rarely find funny. Despite his arrogant exterior, he has a strong sense of justice, which often clashes with the values of the country he serves. Being an SHCI candidate, Kenichi is a multitalented genius who is highly skilled in many areas such as Small Arms combat, Martial Arts, Business and Moneymaking, and even Spelunking, and possesses near-superhuman endurance and a charisma which endears him to nearly all whom he meets. He also has a habit of breaking the fourth wall when speaking to himself, referring to "you."
His original name is Higurchi Ken. When Ken was a kid, he was friends with Natsumi, Sachi and Isono. His father eventually decided to bring about a revolution, causing him to be a target for the police, being his son. Ken and his friends eventually manage to hide in a cave, but Ken ultimately feared for his lfie and abandoned his three friends. This is an event that marked the rest of his life, as it was extremely shameful, since he betrayed not only his three friends, but himself too.
It is revealed later that he is actually speaking to his sister, who has always been right next to him.
After the events in Chapter 4, Kenichi decides he has to save Natsumi, and eventually Isono, Ririko, Sachi and Touka join him. After their plan to infiltrate the prison where Natsumi was failed, they were all arrested, excluding Isono, who managed to escape. After about one month, Ken fakes his addiction to drugs, and manages to surprise Houzuki when he releases him, having believed Ken was finally defeated. He then escapes with his friends, reaching a cave where Isono was waiting for them with a ladder. Only Ken and an injured Ririko were left in the cave, but as they were about to climb the ladder, it crumbles, leaving Ken no choice but to climb the wall with his bare hands and Ririko on his back. When he eventually reaches the top, Houzuki awaits there, stating that he no longer has anything left to teach him, and flies off in his helicotper.
