Anime Relations: Wolverine, X-Men, Blade
Wolverine (7 – 12)
While the series still lacks a better characterization for Mariko, it did a pretty solid job overall. The late additions to the cast were all interesting characters, the plot developed and concluded smoothly and the climactic battle was tense and dramatic. Lots of characters actually died, much more than I expected. Yukio turned out to be a pretty great partner for Logan, much better than Iron Man’s partner was in the previous series. All in all it wrapped up pretty well. Looking forward to the X-Men series.

X-Men (1 – 6)
Pretty strong start, though it slowed down near the middle a little. I’m not sure I like Wolverine’s new design over the one he had in the Wolverine series. Cyclops is turning out to be the star which surprises me considering I haven’t been his biggest fan in the franchise. Armor is a welcomed addition to the cast and by far my favorite character; cute, interesting and powerful. I guess the show will probably improve once they actually focus on the main villain a little, but still, good start.

X-Men (7 – 12)
This series really did come to a halt in the middle, seems to be a continuous problem for Marvel anime series, but the ending was worth sticking around. Perhaps not as exciting as Wolverine’s ending but certainly more emotional. The series also did a more decent job of portraying the powers of a god-like being than most series do. The U-Men were disappointing villains but the Inner-Circle didn’t disappoint on the other hand. Perhaps the series’ most glaring failure is failing to properly focus on Takeo’s relationship with Isako. Overall decent series but not the best showing of the X-Men.

Blade (1 – 3) [Re-watch]
Re-watching this series, I think this is the best of the Marvel anime series. 3 Episodes in and already we have a strong, badass lead, a great female partner for Blade and Van Hellsing himself isn’t too bad; although, admittedly more badass in his youth. Frost isn’t the best villain they could offer but he gets the job done.

Blade (4 – 6) [Re-watch]
Still loving this show. Unlike other Marvel anime it doesn’t slow down near the middle. Also, Lucius is easily a better villain than Frost. He’s arrogant and sophisticated; that’s how I like my vampires. Side note: The old man’s cure totally works, Blade just really doesn’t want to admit it.

Blade (7 – 9) [Re-watch]
Love that they revisited Madripoor and love Wolverine’s appearance. The meeting with Kikyo was pretty well done as well. Honestly, 3 more solid episodes. My only complaint is that their reunion with their teacher felt a bit too forced and could have had more buildup.

Blade (10 – 12) [Re-watch]
Strong finale, comparable to Wolverine’s. Frost ends up being a better villain than I remembered. He definitely has a reason for why he does what he’s doing and there’s a nice contrast between him and Blade in exploring the theme of revenge; however, Frost is different than most villains because it’s made painfully obvious that he was always scum. He has a god complex from being a scientist and believes humans are just test subjects. So he wasn’t really made evil by the path he was forced on so much as we saw the inevitable conclusion of what a man like him becomes with the right push. The scene with Makoto was actually pretty sad and dramatic too, kudos to the director. Afterthought: Couldn’t those turned just live on blood packs? Blade said it wouldn’t last eternally and eventually the hunger would be too much but based on the in-series example we have it seems to be good for at least 30+ years. 30+ year life extension as an ageless, super-human vampire; I’d take it!
