Anime Relations: Choujigen Game Neptune The Animation
こんにちわみんなさん

I'm going to list off all the references in the second episode; both references to the games and the video game industry at large.

mk2 = second Hyperdimension Neptunia game
Victory = third Hyperdimension Neptunia game

Before I start, I noticed something odd. Nepgear mentions how she has never been to Lowee before despite knowing Rom and Ram. I just want to know: how did they meet and become friends if Nepgear has never visited Lowee? Online? Visits from the other goddesses?

1. Abnes, the little blonde girl, is a member of the Seven Sages. She is tricked by the other members into joining for the purpose of saving the world's children (which is her main goal). She serves as their idol and often reports on the goings-on of the world (like she does in the anime). She always appears by slamming a door open followed by ba-thunk; where this door comes from is a mystery sometimes.

2. Rom and Ram, out of boredom, are always playing pranks. Or rather, Ram is bored and Rom just joins her sister in everything. In both mk2 and Victory, they are always playing pranks on everyone but mostly on Blanc which they referenced in the anime.

3. Super Nittenland is a reference to the Super Nintendo, which is often considered Nintendo's best home console.

4. The theme park is full of references to Nintendo. The turtles, mushrooms, coins, and pipes are all from the Mario game series. The coins' symbols are references to other games. The Dogoo is a reference to the Dragon Quest series, the Kupocat is a reference to the Final Fantasy series, and the Tetsir, and the Tetrits is a reference to Tetris. All of these series had their starts on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). The turtle attacking Neptune is yet another reference. Neptune yells that the turtle is after her peaches. This is a reference to the Mario series since Bowser, the series' main villain is a turtle. He is always going after Princess Peach to kidnap her. The sexual position may be yet another refereence to the series since Bowser has kids, and the only girl he's been known to be around is Princess Peach.

5. The villains in this episode, CFW Trick and Linda AKA Underling, are both villains from mk2. There are 4 big bosses in mk2, one for each of the younger sisters (except for CFW Magic who is the main enemy of all 4). CFW Trick is the main enemy of Rom and Ram. The kidnapping is a reference to CFW Trick and Underling's kidnapping of Rom in the game. Underling and by extension, Pirachu, appear so often and fight you so often, are kind of like Team Rocket from Pokemon.

6. Neptune and Abnes's conversation is a reference to Victory, where the two of them constantly called each other young girls and both of them got offended.

7. Whenever a country's Shares are really low, it becomes extremely hard for the goddesses or their younger sisters to move since that's the source of their energy. Blanc's collapsing and Nepgear's comment may be a reference to mk2 when Rom could only sleep due to lack of Shares.

8. The Basillaview is a reference to the Satellaview, a broadcast service offered by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo. The Satellaview would stream in broadcast signals and allow for the playing of games, magazines and other data through the Satellaview. Unfortunately its large price tag, multiple add-ons, and the fact that it was a subscription-based service, lead to an early demise of the Satellaview. They reference its failed attempt in the anime. Vert also mentions how the Basillaview's images are low-resolution which could be a reference to how the Wii's graphics are standard definition while the Xbox 360's and PS3's are high-definition. Vert lends her assistance to improve the images, likely a reference to how the Xbox 360 was the first home console to introduce HD gaming.

9. The licking scene in the warehouse is a reference to mk2 when CFW Trick did the same thing to Rom and Ram. Interestingly enough, there initially was a CG scene which showed Rom and Ram getting licked by CFW Trick but in the end, it was removed from the game. Instead, while Rom and Ram scream, there's a blank screen. Just like in the games, Underling is kind of disgusted by CFW Trick's licking.

10. Rainy Ratnapura is one of Vert's more powerful moves.

11. Underling usually hates being called Underling but everyone calls her that to make fun of her. I found it a little surprising that she didn't get angry at being called that. Lace Ribbon Dance is of Noire's standard moves.

12. Usually Blanc has a foul mouth, but this is the first time translators have got her to use the f-word. The Japanese language doesn't have as many derogatory words as the English language so usually when you hear those words, they may not be what they are. For example, all Blanc said was "Prepare to die, you pervert!" in Japanese. Earlier in the episode her words were translated as "bitches" and "little shits" when all she said was a threataning "You!" Tanzerin Trombe is one of Blanc's standard moves. When CFW Trick was defeated he was blown off into the sky, a reference to Team Rocket from the Pokemon anime.

13. Rom and Ram are always drawing on Blanc's stuff. Blanc, in addition to her goddess duties, likes to read and write as her hobbies. She hates it when any of her friends read what she writes unless she asks them for their opinion.

That's it for this episode. There were quite a few references in this episode which is why I liked this episode.
