I'm basically just going to clarify what to put in each field when adding new manga.

Please see the manga database guidelines for a broader guide and for what kind of works are allowed on MAL in the first place.

Manga Title
Romanization of the Japanese title. Trying to explain the romanization rules MAL uses would be an entry onto itself. Best bet is to use whatever Baka-Updates has as the title and then a mod will fix it if it's wrong. (Note: MAL uses "wo" for を)

Title Synonyms
This exists to combat duplicate submissions of work already in the database. So with that in mind, add synonyms people will use to search for a series. One shots included in an entry can also go here. Please do not add translations of the title in languages other than English.

English Title
Priority is given for the licensed English title. After that, an official Japanese English title is okay. Please don't use titles the scanlator made up.

Japanese Title
Title in Japanese (Kanji) characters (or Hangul, etc)

Total Volumes
Self-explanatory. For one shots it's 0.

Total Chapters
This total includes special chapters, one shots, etc as long as they're more than five pages in length.

Type
If it's more than one chapter it's not a one shot.

Manga Status
Baka-Updates is good at listing whether or not a series is finished.

Plot Synopsis
If you've got nothing just write N/A or something similar and a mod will delete it which will leave the "No synopsis has been added for this manga yet. Click here to update this information." message. Otherwise, please source it as (Source: source) !!! Don't just copy and paste from Baka-Updates and leave it as "From BlahBlahBlah Scans" - it makes me hate you.

Date Published
Serialization dates are the dates the magazine a manga ran in went on sale. These can be a pain to find, but here are some ways to find them:

- The manga itself may list the issues chapters were published in either the table of contents or at the very end. Some scanlators include those pages, they will definitely be in raws/the manga itself, or sometimes you can use the search inside feature on Amazon Japan.
- Natalie is good for newer works.
- You can use Comic Holmes for Hakusensha's shoujo works (this includes series that ran in Hana to Yume and LaLa and their off-shoots).
- For Yuri, the Yuri Project Wiki is helpful.
- Tail's Room keeps track of Ribon and Nakayoshi.
- The actual magazine's site.

Of course, the simplest way is to use Google and simply search the title in Japanese and either 新連載 (for the start date) or 最終回 (for the end date). If Japanese is complete gibberish to you just quickly check to see if the dates are listed anywhere on the manga. If not, move on.

Serialization
Google it or use Baka-Updates.

Manga Genre
We use Comipedia for the demographic.

Additional Info
One shot summaries should go here.

Relations
Note that "adaptation" can only be used for a manga/novel and an anime. So even if a manga is an adaptation of a Light Novel (or vice versa) you have to list it as an "Alternative Version."

URLs
If you don't add a Wikipedia link or an Official Site link, the M-U ID won't show up on the page. Mods will be able to see it though so add it anyway.

Image
The ideal image has no text and is 225x350px. Otherwise, just upload the highest-res version of a volume cover (under 500kb) that you can find. I recommend using Amazon Japan and going to the true image url. So http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VJHwCqM3L._SS500_.jpg becomes http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VJHwCqM3L.jpg In some cases you can also use Azid.

Feel free to ask any questions if you need more clarification/help.

Again, please see the manga database guidelines for a broader guide and for what kind of works are allowed on MAL in the first place.

Publisher dates are the correct dates. If Amazon conflicts with them, they are wrong. Amazon is frequently off a few days (usually just with magazines though). I'm not so sure about Daito-i but they're probably better than Amazon because I think Amazon is using their own on sale dates and not at all trying to use the publisher's.

What do you do when you encounter conflicting dates? Sometimes I see one date on Autumnleaf but another on Amazon or Daito-i. How do I decide what to trust?

It’s time to ditch the text file.
