Anime Relations: Samurai Champloo

Linked in the image above is a youtube playlist of my favorite songs from the Samurai Champloo soundtrack.

Samurai Champloo has, without question, the best original soundtracks I have ever heard in anime. There are four soundtracks in total: Departure, Impression, Masta, and Playlist. And these albums have some of the best beats hip hop has to offer. With more than 70 outstanding tracks, the Samurai Champloo OSTs will likely remain my favorite for as long as I live, and are albums that I will forever be revisiting.

The music was produced by four separate artists: Nujabes, Force of Nature, Fat Jon, and Tsutchie. Nujabes, a hip hop legend and one of my all-time favorite artists, is the most well known of the four. If you do not own all of this man's music, you are not living life to the fullest. Fat Jon and Force of Nature are also two very well-respected hip hop artists. Fat Jon has produced a large library of music (with well over half of it being phenomenal), is a recognizable name in hip hop, and is a key member of the remarkable hip hop group Five Deez. Force of Nature has produced relatively little material, but releases only excellence. Tsutchie is the least known of the four. Tsutchie was a former member of the popular Japanese hip hop group Shakkazombie, has been a close friend of the director of Samurai Champloo for many years, and produced the music for the Cowboy Bebop summary episode Mish-Mash Blues. All four are fantastic artists that deserve your attention.

Considering the sheer amount of effort put into the music of Samurai Champloo, I think it's safe to say that this is one of the most ambitious musical endeavors that has ever, or will ever take place in anime. Enjoy.
