Are you one of the many people who get up in the morning without sleeping? You're probably one of them or you wouldn't be reading this article. There are many ways for getting good sleep at night, or at least increasing the possibility. Does it really matter if you are trying to fall asleep, or does it only happen as a serendipitous thing. The truth is that staying asleep, once you get asleep, is possible, and there are steps that will make it happen. In this article we will look at some of the basic things you can do to get a better night's sleep.

Lack of exercise can contribute to insomnia. Exercise is a habit that can help cure insomnia, and that's in addition to all the other advantages you can gain from it. Since your muscles are tired from your workout, they'll be more relaxed when you go to bed at night. On the other hand, right before bed is not the time to do intense exercise. A workout is a kind of stimulant, so you want to do it early in the day; later on, however, it helps you calm down and fall asleep. Ask an expert such as a personal trainer or a physician if you need help at putting together a good workout to promote sleep -and any other physical goals you might have. Snacking before bed, in moderation, can help you sleep. You may have noticed that eating certain kinds of foods makes you sleepy, and this is what you're looking for now. Some foods that will tend to make you sleepy include turkey, nuts and (warm) milk. So you could warm up a little milk and drink it with a little bit of turkey before bed; the turkey, with nothing like ketchup, mustard, etc. on it, has tryptophan, the ingredient that causes you to feel drowsy. Now you know why holidays meals where everyone eats turkey are usually followed by people starting to nod off on the couch or in their chairs.

The third thing you can do when the sandman just won't visit, is to get up! It's just too frustrating to lay there and not be able to get to sleep. Of course, not being able to get to sleep brings on the stress - which makes it even harder to fall asleep. A vicious circle. After the first 30 minutes, if you are still restless, get up and find something relaxing to do. Find something relaxing to do in another room - with soft lighting and maybe soft music - and see if that helps. Some suggestions would be to read something pleasant or just relax and meditate.

If you need to find ways to fall asleep, there are a lot of ways to increase your chances. You have many different options, including finding the right bedtime routine, sleeping in a darkened room, and even taking prescribed medication, if necessary. Getting a good night's sleep is just a matter of trying different things. There is something that will work best for you, and all you need to do is figure it out.
