The entire .hack series is a precursory work to Sword Art Online in the fact .hack was one of the first series to come out for the virtual reality genre, but is also one of the better known earlier works. This particular .hack is short, allowing a quick consumption for those starting out with Sword Art Online and wanting to expand their horizons into the .hack series, but on the flip side, SAO provides a twist on what .hack helped to make popular.

.hack is one of the forerunners to the virtual reality genre, but in particular, this short .hack series and Accel World focus on main characters who are misfits of sorts even within the gaming world, yet who end up becoming heroes.

War in isekai world. Troubles with loging out. Threats that can destroy world. Struggle and tension. Both are worth checking out because they are branches of main series and could have been omitted.

Both of these anime are centered around a certain game. The main protagonist of each anime has done something by accident resulting to damage of the game's order that caused disruption to their real lives. A mysterious character appears after them whom they have to fight through with to return the game's equilibrium and reunite with each other.

.hack//Quantum is the Tsubasa of the .hack universe. Many of the characters are similar to their counterparts and somewhat follow in their footsteps. .hack//Quantum is a major treat for fans, but still accessible to newcomers.

The ethics of cybernetics and the boundaries of the human mind are themes that are explored in both franchises. Corporate or governmental conspiracies related to the usage of futuristic technologies are a major themes in both series. Cyberbrains (GitS) or data chip implants (Quantum), if you like a good mix of SF with action, you'll enjoy both series. Note that .hack is a much light-hearted version compared to Stand Alone Complex, which is for the more hardened viewers.
