Hyakujuu-Ou GoLion

Both of these over-the-top sci-fi action series have episodes that tell various different stories, making them episodic enough that you can easily pick them up where you left off. 

I've had a similar experience with both of these shows. Both involve a combining robot destroying evil monsters with a giant sword. However, Might Gaine's titular robot is piloted only by one person up against crime lords who create the monsters. 

Both series' were adapted Stateside into Voltron, with Dairugger XV being Vehicle Voltron and Golion being Lion Voltron. 

Some similarities: - a team of five - the red guys look alike - not so good animation 

Both are about giant robots defending the Universe from evil forces. 

Both are classic anime about groups of five smaller robots that combine into a bigger one and fight enemies. 

Both are Giant robot shows that are invlolved more or less with the Voltron Series
