Both shows deal with a young, female new recruit joining a special police force that has just been militarized with some new technology. In one show it's tanks, in the other, it's a mech suit. However, both shows focus around the utilization of this new technology for fighting crime. Character design and animation styles are also pretty similar.

Two short OVA series from around the same time, featuring the everyday life of Japanese police department with female protagonists. Both series have a similar upbeat slice-of-live mood and excellent animation quality.

Both are slice-of-life comedies (Patlabor being a workplace slice-of-life, FMP being set in a high school) set against a backdrop that discusses serious topics such as militarism, crime and terrorism. Both feature more urban combat than your usual mecha anime, with fights being done in densely populated areas where collateral damage raises the risks of things going wrong.

Bullbuster is basically Patlabor's blue collar cousin, with both follow a mecha fan who joins a company working with hard sci-fi mechas to protect the peace and order, and even sharing a couple of character archetypes in their groups, most notably Tajima/Gotoh. While Patlabor is about a police squad, Bullbuster is about monster control.

Extremely similar cast of main characters in which both series take place in a realistic sci-fi setting that focuses more on the people that operate machines than the robotics themselves. Both have similar art styles and thematic interpretation as well, with messages like 'hardships come with desire'.

Both are short ova series with a female protagonist who pilots a mech. Both characters can have their comedic moments but also some good heroic moments ( mostly from Aim the top Gunbuster). Gunbuster has more the action and Patlabor is a SOL mecha series with good cast.

They don’t appear similar at first glance, but having an overlap of the same director, co-director, and bulk of the voice cast leads to the situational and character based comedy of both shows playing out in a similar manner. Patlabor is exponentially more grounded compared to the endlessly goofy Urusei Yatsura, but many of Oshii’s hallmarks are present in both anime.

Anime about an unusual police force (Patlabor - mechs, Toshokan Sensou - librarians) that have a mix of light-hearted character interaction (spunky female lead included) and serious police operations.

Tokio Private Police may be a hentai, but in terms of a cute girl going to work for the police of a big city that uses robots to stop crime, this is obviously a big homage to Patlabor and Dominion Tank Police, but with sex scenes interspersed.

Both casts create a welcoming, "laid back" atmosphere. Instead of working with Patlabors, it's dragons.
