Both feature a large population trapped on a ship forced to fend off enemies who appear to be attacking them for no apparent reason. While the society Infinite Ryvius descends into chaos, Macross' society is still maintained very well, but the similarities of having the fight off the enemy are very obvious.

Macross forms the template that Nadesico uses. The love triangle, the singing idol, the macho friend of the main character, and the influence of culture on the alien enemies. The big difference is that the overall theme of Macross and Nadesico are different.

Both animations has got that old animation easy to recognize but not for this being worse. They got a space trouble with different civilizations each one with their own culture and custom that makes mistrust between them. The music plays an important role, make the characters evolve, forget the past and continue progressing with their own goals. The ships and the space travels are present in each animation. There is an character in Macross that can remind so much to Stella, with that quiet attitude but sensitive with love.

Both show's follow a group of peole piloting Large Mecha. How ever there are some diffrences such as the main bad guy in the anime.

Another 1980s series which has a similar romanticized, upbeat, and theatrical feel to this space military drama about young adults trying to make sense of the situation (and themselves) as they face an overwhelmingly unknown enemy.

If you like the battles and romance of Heroic Age then you will love Macross. -space battles -space romance -space tech The show for all your space opera needs

Technological wonders of an ancient culture are discovered on Earth, causing the Earth-dwellers to suddenly advance their own scientific understanding of space and robotics. Attackers come from outer space, looking to invade and inhabit Earth, so the characters are forced to fight back using their new weapons while trying to engage in peace negotiations.

Both shows are about humans fighting giants who outnumber them. Both shows require the humans the enemy abilities against them. This show however takes place in space.

No, LOGH isn't really similar to Macross. But it is to Robotech, wich unfortunately is not on the list. Both series are long space epics with lots of characters and untimely deaths. Both have evolving settings and huge end-season twists, where important events have serious consequences that will affect the rest of the series. Both have a narrator who explains the plot like it was a documentary about historical facts. Both have soldiers dying by the thousands because of incompetent leaders. Both have political intrigue and an interesting and politically incorrect take on fascism. Both are Gundam successors about the horrors of war.

In both cases culture (otaku culture and protoculture) is used as military means in a comedic fashion. Besides that major point, both anime are pretty different.

Macross' plot is really similar with Gurren Lagann's.Its about the human's nature of feeling the need to explore the unknown , this will lead to conflict served with romance and a lot of action! Macross tries to show that human kind and general any other being is helpless to resist it's nature (whatever it is).(Yes Im talking about Devil's Dolls).Gurren Lagann shows how insignificant human is compared to powers that exist in the world outside earth but in the end , HUMAN WILL and love , can make you enough powerful to stop anything that will get in your way and  read more

Both are 80s romance anime with a heavy focus on love triangles. While Macross has its fair share of comedy, it's more serious overall than KOR. Both also feature great music from the time

Although Valrave's mainly derivative of Sunrise's famous Real Robot anime. One show that rarely comes up when discussing Valvrave's influences is Macross. The first season of Valvrave is about the journey of an entire space colony module, practically a city, filled with both civilian and military. Thus, there's a lot of civilian drama, involving romance, betrayal and friendship from Module 77's population of high school students, a lot like the SDF-1 in Macross, which was a civilian city on a massive military spaceship One of Valrave's main characters is idol singer Saki Rukino. She and her school make a music video as propaganda to raise the morale  read more

Both are military based 80s mecha series in which humanity is fighting a desperate battle against alien invaders. Both shows also come with a hefty dose of drama, although Macross' is more love triangle related while in Dancouga it comes from the squad's dynamic and Sara's lingering feelings for Shapiro. Notable difference is that Macross is a real robot series and Dancouga is super robot.

Both series are about the conflict between 2 diffirent races, but in both series war is not the only topic. There are alot of romantic relationships, and also distict diffirentces between the two races's ideologies and lifestyle and also in both series characters are well established as well as they are charismatic.

The similarities between these two series are the two main attractions: mechas and fighting aliens. What's very similar about the mechas is the ability to transform into jet mode and humanoid form. One cool thing to note are the pilot characters. Both series have the common concept of forming a 3-man team when sortied.

Macross and Orguss share virtually the same key staff, from director, to character and mechanical designers, to composer, to writers, etc. And above all they have a similar vibe with some serious drama here and there tossed in with a little fun comedy at times, and you'd almost believe they're set in the same universe. All in all Orguss feels like it makes a better unofficial sequel to Macross than any of the official sequels Macross ever got.

Combat, Drama and Adventuring - (And your occasional share of laughs) Starzinger and Macross shares these entertaining aspects and delivers them to you with their unique 70's and 80's charm that cannot be achieved by modern day anime, whether its in space or on solid ground :o)

Macross has an undeniable legacy among mecha anime, but its footprints are equally as visible in any anime using music to combat against or communicate with aggressive aliens. Macross applies this concept to create a space opera whereas Takt Op. Destiny essentially creates a road trip anime. If you enjoy this type of narrative then watch where it began with Macross or how it has evolved with Takt Op. Destiny.

Mecha anime has long ago experience a decline in popularity from its peak during the 80s and 90s. Anyone still exploring this genre must watch Macross because it is a formative title. Macross also influenced most anime dealing with interplanetary warfare. Majestic Prince is an easily overlooked mecha anime with interplanetary warfare that was released after the resurgence in mecha anime during the 2000s. It hits all the elements that space and mecha anime fans love. Although Majestic Prince brings nothing new to the table, it is a respectable entry in the space and mecha canon. Crest of the Stars and Macross are the beginning of long running space opera franchises. Crest of the Stars is adapted from a light novel series first published in 1996 and continues to this day. Macross is an original anime from 1982, which continues to have new anime. They share some similar themes, but otherwise have different approaches. There are very few successful anime space operas that fans of either franchise would miss out by not watching the other.

So do you like Fighter jets that transform into Gerwalk and Battroid mode that fight aliens? If so then you'll like both of these series. Both of these series are unrelated in terms of universe but were both adapted into the Robotech universe.

Years after the major Hype for Yamato, rivaling Star Wars, Robotech/Macross eventually came into being. They both sport fighters, a huge honking gun (Reflex cannon, but the Wave Motion gun was the FIRST BFG!), and large space battles. They also have aliens assisting humans to get to space, Yamato was with a aliens still alive giving blue prints and equipment on a crashed ship. Robotech/Macross was with a crashed ship reversed engineered. They have a theme of culture differences between Gamilions way of thinking, and the Zentradi's war culture in Robotech/Macross. There is a entry level pilot who works his way up, be it  read more

All about the mechas! There is also aliens being involved as part of the main plot, and you would find out about how similar the sort of "deculture" for the aliens later in both series.

Similarities: -Mechas -Alien invasion -Romance (in a sort) They both have training academies for young people to train as pilots for mechas. They even use the same type of weaponry to fend off against alien invasions of Earth.

The main characters are both civilians caught up in a conflict with giant aliens in space in a vessel filled with other civilians to protect en route to a destination far away. That's pretty much where the similarities end. Macross isn't too realistic and filled with comic relief while Sidonia is more serious and gritty. Macross's animation is dated and Sidonia is modern CGI. But if you can get past the differences, someone who enjoyed Sidonia may enjoy Macross as well.

Both anime feature a large cast of characters very quickly fleeing from dangerous aliens in a giant, mysterious, transforming mech to somewhere far away from home. The pilots and bridge personnel in each slowly figure out how to use their respective mechs more tactically while continuously running away and fighting a futile battle. Ideon focuses more on the effect that the relentless attacks of their alien assailants has on the crew. Meanwhile, Macross focuses more on how the aliens react and change after coming in contact with humans and their culture, especially music. So, for Macross watchers, give Ideon a look if you want something more pessimistic  read more
